    Olympus introduced Live ND feature in E-M1X, and is now subsequently added to E-M1 Mark III, the lastest flagship too. I have been asked several questions about how the Live ND works, can it work in video, can you use flash with it, can you go ND1000 equivalent? So I thought why not make a video just to talk about this specific feature and explain it once and for all. I discuss how the Live ND Works, the limitations of Live ND as well as how to activate it from your OM-D cameras.

    I just realized that the Olympus User Manuals for the both the E-M1X and the E-M1 Mklll are in error regarding the Shutter Speed limitations for Live ND. Both manual state that "The slowest shutter speed available varies with the ND filter selected." It should say, "The fastest shutter speed available...". Maybe Robin can pass this on to Olympus for future correction.
    Thanks Robin for this excellent and clear presentation of this very useful feature.

    When I just got mkIII tried to use live ND , of course without reading manual ;) first. So had to learn all of these limitations hard way ;) I wish I would see your video before , it would save me from scratching my head many times. I think this feature should be treated as ‘in camera’ effect , very similar to focus stacking and as long as you know limitations it can come handy in particular situations. Thanks Robin for another useful video!

Sad about what is happening with Olympus, but I'm partial to M4/3 (including Panasonic, as I use both) and will continue to enjoy them as long as I can. • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 года назад

      I don't do such photography though, in case you have not noticed my images are always quite well balanced, not tipping too far to black or white, as high and low key photography would require.

    • @alexreay4164
      @alexreay4164 4 года назад

      Lately I’ve really switched on to using Low Key gradation with Contrast +1. If relying on the camera to meter then yes you get a darker image with highlights better preserved. BUT, if you bump up the Exp Comp and use the histogram to meter you get a slightly richer colour palette than if using Standard Gradation. I’ve done many tests and now LOVE Low Key Grad. In Monochrome is where Low Key Gradation (+1 contrast) really shines, by far the best OM-D setting for Monochrome, deeper blacks but still able to deliver true whites for contrast. Basically a better tonal range... in my opinion.

    With AF, we can bracket to stitch later, or stack in camera. It's a shame we don't have equivalent choices for live ND, exposure bracketing (beyond JPEG), live composite, high resolution etc. Any of the Olympus cameras could store the individual images for live ND and the others, and Olympus Workspace could process them on a (beefy) PC to create the final raw files.

    This can be done with any camera of any brand, just get a series of pictures with shorter shutter speed, align them and use any software to do an average of all those exposures. But, it's cool that Olympus can do that in-camera and into RAW as well as I read. Impressive.

    Thank you Robin. Another feature explained with pros and cons. Before I had E-M1 Mark III and forgot to bring a ND filter I shoot multiple exposures and merged them in Photoshop for a simulated ND effect. To have that made directly in camera is a bonus. Now I can view the effect directly on the LCD and dicide how strong effect I need.

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 года назад +1

      No worries, I share what I can. Indeed the compositing modes can also be replicated in post-processing, but being able to do that in camera, and live, with RAW output, is really something!

    Hi Robin!
    Can you use this feature with panasonic lens?? It does not work, according to me.

  • @falseusername
    @falseusername Год назад

    Nope, the thing, that it'll not be in other cameras is just marketing issue. Why you would buy expensive M1 Mark III, it all of the features exists in M5 or M10.
    Processor? Well, it can affect the speed of stacking frames. It's not a problem, if camera will shoot 3/4 frames and then go for stacking, as it does in saving series or bracketing.
    Everyone just need to make more money, so Olympus too :)
    Nice video btw, but i wanted to see the difference with water on ND16 and ND32. I think on ND32 there'll be much better pic.

    Robin... do you think we will see a Grad and Inverse grad filters in future releases???
    I have been doing some forest photography last weekend. 30km walked on saturday and 20 on sunday. NO TRIPOD, NO 7-14 filters (150mm). I saved like 3kgs in total of weigt. (I took the 12-40 too with the mandatory polarizer and ND6 and ND10 for emergencies... but if you don't need to do long long exposures, EM1.3 is the absolute definitive weapon
    I don't think there is ANY camera in the market even close to EM1.3 for a landscape photographer (any sensor size)

    It´s a very handy feature, I used it some times and I never knew how it works, thank you Robin. Another feature drives me crazy. I used often the Foto stacking mode in my Olympus OM-D EM10 II , the picture was made ready in the camera. I heard that this also works in OM-D EM1 III , but I always get single pictures to stack them on a computer. The option "Foto stacking" in the Menu was always greyed out! How can I activate it and how can I manage that the camera makes the Foto stacking?? In M10 it was so easy!

    Thank you so much for the detailed view. I really appreciate it. I do use ND filters now, with the Pen-F and a couple of lenses. This feature really intrigued me and was a stumbling block on the E-M5 MKIII verses the E-M1 MKIII debate as its a $500 difference (at the moment Nov 2020.) and maybe I just go with the E-M5 and continue to focus stars by hand (really used to that as I do a lot of Astro, too). That said, this video gave me reason to see how I would use the Live ND in addition to and separate from my regular ND setups so, I'm making the leap and buying the E-M1 (today) and I now *also* look forward to shooting stars with AF in the coming months as nebula season is upon us. Thank you! Happy Holidays.

    Another times I was trying to use the Built in ND was when I was shooting with my F0.95 lens for portrait under the bight light, even 1/8000 shutter was little too bright, so I said cool, lucky I have my EM1X today and we have a magic tool call Live ND, so let me let me call it up, and guess what, the damn feature has a fastest shutter speed of 1/2 second, WHAT A JOKE !!!

    • @robinwong
      @robinwong  4 года назад +3

      Focus stacking works very, very differently. They are composites of course, but they stack using different methods. Live ND is much closer to Live Composite than anything else.

    • @HilbertHotel
      @HilbertHotel 4 года назад +1

      Focus stacking does make the images first, stores them in the buffer storage and merges them afterwards, that's why you get the progression bar afterwards and have to wait. It's basically just burst shutter mode with focus shift an computation afterwards. Live ND does all this while taking the pictures and even shows you the current result. That's waaaaay more complicated for the camera's processor. Cheers!

    • @Ulrich.Bierwisch
      @Ulrich.Bierwisch 4 года назад

      If something moves in high res, it looks bad because the frames are shifted and there are jumps and gaps in the motion blur. Live ND takes the pictures with a continuous exposure, so the readout is going on for 1/30s or longer. If something moves, you get the expected motion blur.
