  • Did you know that Warhammer 40k and its lore have a dark secret? Today's 40k horror stories don't come from r/rpghorrorstories but actually /tg/ and is about a furry DM that thinks the Warhammer universe's lore could use a bit of an upgrade. Is this a glory story for the writer or a horror story for the party that has to put up with them? This is up for you to decide.
    I've enjoyed covering all these RPG Horror Stories and find a lot of inspiration from channels like CritCrab! Please make sure to share your own thoughts on this in the comments below.

    This was a good story number one because it wasn't dungeons and dragons or pathfinder. End number 2 in the first campaign. They did exactly what they were supposed to do. And killed the non human thing benefictor or no. Maybe the GM should have announced the character's presence. Be all hologram so when they shot at it he wouldn't have died. And in the second campaign, they both seemed in there to sabotage the other party. So in this case, nobody was the victim. Had the Furies head their way. They would have laid waste to the imperium and vice versa

    • @lootgoblinmarketplace
      @lootgoblinmarketplace  11 месяцев назад +2

      Yeah the first story was totally fair, after that it was two people who want to play completely different types of games trying to “beat” the other instead of playing their own separate games. I agree there was no true victim there.

  • @TheIllusiveMan11

    What makes this all hilarious is that there IS a canonical 'furry' race in 40k, they're called Felinids. Exactly how 'furry' they are is kept somewhat vague, with the Kroot saying they are nearly indistinguishable from humans, but they are there. Felinids are known for cool heads in the face of oppression, claws the length of forearms and being highly efficient killers. They are classified has Abhumans so they aren't outright exterminated on sight, but do undergo a great deal of discrimination. So there was a way to make this work within the context of the series that could have been very interesting.
    And for the record, the Felinids weren't behind everything or super OP or whatever. They were just another Abhuman subspecies.

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 11 месяцев назад +2

      They're not the only ones either.
      - Fenrisian Wolves are basically what the Furry Fandom would call "ferals" - characters with human-like personalities and intelligence but fully animal bodies. In 40k lore, they're the result of the Canis Helix having fully taken over the genetics of the past settlers of Fenris.
      - Fenrisian Great Wolves, by the way, are what you get when that happens to an Astartes.
      - Kroot are basically bird-people - the lore even gives an in-depth look into their physiology, they're actually VERY realistic to how a humanoid avian might actually look apart from the whole "genetic adaptation" thing.
      - Most of the higher ranking daemons of Tzeentch are raven-people.
      - Corvus Corax is also a raven-person, apparently.

    I know this is often said but it needs Reiterated. Understand most furries arent like this and are just normal people who like creating more ideal versions of themslves and sometimes cosplaying as them. Most furries are just people with various anxieties trying to use masks to better express themself, that also usually just find animals cute or cool. PLEASE understand we are not animal fuckers, and most of us dont try and force the fandom down people's throats.

      Very well said, I think the story is funny from the perspective of a diehard fan trolling someone trying to retcon their favorite franchise, but his criticisms of furries shouldn’t be pushed onto the whole group. It seems like he used to know this furry very closely and the hostility is much more personal.

    • @kyuven
      @kyuven 10 месяцев назад +2

      I've found that a lot of furries in general have identity issues and glom on to whatever would be the most acceptable thing to them while still allowing them to stand out from the crowd.
      In other words, they're not a creepy weirdo because they're a furry, they're a furry because they're a creepy weirdo.
      Which makes those that are just interested in the artwork and funny animal stuff look bad, but in the same way the weird guys who paint themselves in their team's colors and go shirtless to football games look bad. And they're probably both sporting the same mental disconnect just in a different flavor.
      I really want to emphasize that this isn't something limited to furries, but because of the bombastic presentation of it, it gets a lot more negative attention to the point people who fall under the criteria but are functioning adults don't publicly admit their association. They box up the fursuit, not hang it over the couch, as it were.

    Ive only seena few videos from Loot Goblin.
    He hit the nail on the head. There is never one group of people. This problem with the Furry player faction is that according to the story they just want to play their game, but are using the Dark Heresy rules for it. They are ironically/hypocritically persecuting other people for not joining them. Note: There are Beastmen Mutants within the Imperium. I don't know if there are rules for them in Dark Heresy, but it should be simple. Its making them into the Mary Sues that Retcon 40years of Warhammer 40,000 lore that should be understandably aggravating.
    What if Chewbacca and the Wookies were secretly the creators of the Force.
    Its also relevant with Dungeons and Dragons. Some people have fun with using the rules to make their own settings, and others want to change everything to make an original setting. Most RPGHorrorStories begin with homebrew settings.

    Honestly what did dm expect? Of all the games to put your self insert avatar in, you chose dark heresy? A game about hunting chaos and xenos monsters, typically by unrestricted and unsupervised zealots with nearly limitless resources and authority (or at least lackeys of said zealots). Not only that, but you made said self-insert, at best an abhuman that's REALLY towing the line of what's acceptable to your average imperial, and at worst mutant xeno underhiver scum that any arbites officer worth his brainwashing would annihilate on sight. I totally respect the dungeon master trying to have a tender moment with their players, but the only tenderness to be found in 40k is how tender the flesh of your enemies is after you knock them about once or twice with a power maul.

    • @josephperez2004

      My guess is the DM thought that these people were actually his friends. I get that he did something that he really should not have expected to fly, but it sounds like these guys didn't even attempt to talk to him after it was clear he was really upset at revealing a part of himself getting treated like a dark humor punchline.
      I think the GM went about this the wrong way sure, but at the end of the day was there another group of people playing another game setting that his character would have fit into better that he had access to?
      I also get that the GMs conduct afterwards is pretty crappy (if we are taking it at face value), but I'm reminded of the old saying 'Hurt people hurt people'. There seems to never have been an attempt to repair the schism here, despite the poster talking a big game about how great friends they were before or how it was up to them to save their buddy (or at least ruin their game). But alas, a whole lot of this is and will forever be speculation on how truthful things are. Afterall, blessed is the mind too small for doubt.

      @@vlad_ussr8390 Could he have played D&D by himself? There is no indication that this group played other games, though that would be the norm. The fact they were apparently blindsided by him having a furry character seems to suggest they never had a game were they could have fit in more easily. I'm sure it wouldn't have been so shocking if, say, they ran a D&D game and they commonly interacted with beastkin, shifters, minotaur, satyr, fauns, or other similar races.
      Given how old this post supposedly is, it's likely well before the level of connectivity to find groups that fit you that we enjoy today. Twenty years ago, the local gaming group and what they wanted to play was all you had for most people, take it or leave it.
      Edit: Self correction, out of curiosity I looked up publishing dates and the absolute earliest that they could be playing Dark Heresy would be 2008 if they were doing 1st edition, 2014 if doing 2nd edition. So twenty years is definitely not the timeline they were working on.

      The thing is that if the story is completely true, the DM had zero self-awareness and once the initial incident occurred he should have realised that “coming out as furry” isn’t a good idea. Sure having an interest in antro is fine, but being a furry isn’t something you need to share with everyone else during a 40k ttrpg, with added lore breakage to boot. There’s also the whole “don’t bring your kinks to the table” rule, which applies if he described the character in that much detail.
      Granted trying to “save him from himself” was just a bad idea and I doubt the story is true, given the description of the furry players in general. However he shouldn’t have brought his magical realm to 40k, and should have read the room and realised that trying to bring a DM Mary Sue into the game would not work. Also don’t try to retcon the lore...unless you are GW.

Not to mention how self-righteous and petty they sound describing it.

    Honestly, this horrorstory has alerted me to the fact that WH40K isnt my cup of tea. Just a bit too grimdark for my liking.
    As for the events unique to the story itself, OP is an instigating prick. They couldve just found a GM that wasnt an equally petty manchild and lived a happier life. Instead, they fed these people's victim complexes and forwarded their "fursecution" narrative by going out of their way to antagonize them for being furries. Yes, they stomped all over the 40K lore with the meer existence of their characters, but you couldve left it at "correction, dead." but no! They had to bully people who were already holing themselves up in echochambers and thus becoming even further societal outcasts.

      From my experience, the 40k community is 45% powergamers (partially because the main tabletop wargame kinda demands it with how broken it is), 45% wannabe Black Templars/Khorne Berserkers/, 5% immature (like the GM from the story) and 5% chill people. The whole setting just kinda attracts a lot of questionable people.

      I bet you hate the recent lore additions for 8th, 9th and 10th edition, then. 40k's been on a bit of a nobledark kick lately, with the return of Guilliman and the pseudo-revival of the Emperor.
      Doesn't always have to be the community that changes things. GW is focused primarily on appealing to as wide an audience as possible, like most major companies, and they probably realized that they'd be writing themselves into a corner if they kept pushing things further.

    It's definitely a horror story, and is mildly amusing, if only for cheaters to be taken down a peg by c!@#s. I can't really root for OP though. In any other game what he and his circle did to escalate the conflict would paint them as !@#holes. However, they get to escape that fate because they happen to be playing a game where xenophobia is not only celebrated, but it trumps all other concerns, including basic logic. I acknowledge that the furry referee was introducing elements to his story that fly in the face of standard 40K lore, and he should have said as much before the game started. If he had done so, then the OP and his cohorts would be entirely in the wrong. As it stands, they had a right to be irritated at having furry aliens being inserted into what seems like otherwise bog standard lore. However, the decent thing to do in that case would be to walk. So they are still sh!@#$%s in my mind for returning and "teaching the furry and his circle a lesson." Why would we want to bolster the numbers of a niche subset of an already niche fandom? I guess they took the lessons of 40K to heart. LOL

    Hmmm not sure how I feel about this one. Like, cool, they can be better RPears, but they're the bigger assholes. Framing as you'd like, they infiltrated the game with the intent of killing the furry characters. Is that cringe? Yeah. Is it 40k lore accurate to be furries? Heck no. Did they HAD to go there and sabotage their "friend" fun JUST to be lore accurate? Also no. That's honestly what I despise about the 40k fanbase. Just live and let live man. What really baffles me is how much you seem to be on OP's side, even after you recognized they went a bit too far. I don't know, this doesn't feel like a RPGHorrorStory, sounds more like an RPGShamingStory or BullyingStory.

    Speaking from the amateur profiler in me, I find it easy to imagine that someone who seems as judgemental, confrontational, and disrespectful as I sense OP to be, could be describing things in a less than accurate way. I get that when a bunch of "gross nerds", if you pardon the expression, with a common interest to bond over, can get a little insular and indulgent with their world-building and roleplaying, I can also imagine a group of people who have found a group, who share an interest that they themselves have learned can attract hostility, may want to take an existing narrative that they enjoy, and tailor it to their aforementioned interest as a place to freely and safely explore the setting. Which is it? We can't know. But I noticed right away the tone of the OP, and I feel like I'm pretty close to convinced that he's just a dick either way. Whether the furries were also contributing is a separate matter.
    I think the thing that really stands out to me is that OP describes the DM as a pretty normal and cool and sane guy until, at the moment he reveals to his "friend" that he's a furry, he suddenly is a creepy weirdo with a sick fetish. They even seem open that this is the reason for the change in perception.
    I'm no Furry. I think it's pretty gross. But I don't think people that like it are gross. Just people. People who like things I don't. I find it increasingly frustrating that certain members of the Human species can't get on the same page as the rest of us on this. Your Kink Is Not My Kink, But Your Kink Is Okay.

    • @vlad_ussr8390
      @vlad_ussr8390 11 месяцев назад +1

      I agree but he describes it as gross cause of how his friend starts to act and who they hang out with, which dare I say is reasonable. Now of course it's possible that a lot of it is hyperbolic but that isn't something we can check, so we assume it's true.
      Though, I wouldn't say OP is wrong, even if he is being dick-ish. Introducing a Xeno race to the imperium, makes 0 sense. None, and their reactions makes sense to kill furries. As xenophobia in imperium is not surprising. They barely treat beastmen as ab-human.

    • @annabella1650

      If the OP is to be believed, then the DM’s change in behave coincides with him dealing with the furry fandom. I’ve got no experience with that side of the internet...but fandoms can change people for the worse, especially if they’re insular and spearheaded by folks who want to make a sort of cult. Essentially the issue wasn’t the DM being a furry, but that he let it take over.
