I’m SO glad Sistar were thrown into the mix. Their discography is full of timeless bops that I still have in my gym & beach playlists! If you do deep dive Sistars catalogue, consider including Ma Boy by their Subunit, Sistar19, which was Hyolyn and the rapper, Bora.

Lmao irony bringing us back to Sunmi and HyunA in the same group.

i was never really into wonder girls before but i actually loved their re-branding and they brought sunmi back in and became a band. they became super vibe-y and i loved that. but then they disbanded. :(

Wonder Girls started the girl group craze with three back to back hits Tell Me, So Hot, and Nobody. Nobody literally took Asia by storm. It was until they started their expansion into the US market and lineup changes that their popularity declined. Saying they were "up there along with SNSD, 2NE1, and KARA" isn't the most accurate statement. They were THE top girl group.

small rant but this really makes me miss older women and slightly more mature concepts in kpop. even just reading "i like that"'s lyrics were so refreshing bc it felt like it had a bit of depth and was relatable to me at my big age lol. even in "i swear", its not the girl's getting out from grade school, but getting off of work and driving down to the beach to hang with friends. its just nice to see ig.

Man this was a trip down memory lane!
Wonder Girls is also one of those groups that went through a ton of lineup changes! Sunmi actually originally debuted with Wonder Girls when she was 15 (along with Hyuna who was 14), left the industry to go to university, and came back to the industry as a soloist then rejoined Wonder Girls for this comeback. If nothing else you might want to check out Why so lonely, which ended up being their last comeback, where they actually played the instruments on that album. As well, the vocalist you liked in I feel you is Yeeun, whose stage name is Ha:tfelt and has released a couple of albums since leaving JYP. I'd also recommend Yubin's music too. (I assume I don't need anyone tell you about what Sunmi's been up to since 2016 lol)
I'm not surprised you ended up liking Sistar so much, they were the queens of bops and they could all really sing and dance. I would actually really recommend watching the dance practice and some lives of I Like That because the choreo was super cool.
Also if you need more 2nd gen recs After School and 4minute were also big back in the day!

So, T-ara. They’ve had several different number of members but they don’t have lineup changes like some other groups. The OT6 were there for almost the entirety. As of now, there are only 4 left in the group (Boram and Soyeon aren’t in it anymore, maybe partially due to age and stress). So they’ve started as OT6 then 7 then 8 then 7 then back to OT6 and now 4. (It was rumored that their CEO wanted to make T-ara be like SNSD and they had plans to add a 9th member, she was revealed and everything, but never made her official debut, likely because the 7th member left and created a HUGE scandal).
For Wonder Girls, I’m not 100% that you’ll vibe with most of their title tracks. Nobody is quintessential. I really like So Hot and Like Money the most.
With SISTAR. NO ONE DOES IT LIKE THEM! Literally who out here doing sexy?!?! This is why we love grown WOMEN in Kpop. SISTAR literally started the trend of “make it big with a sexy concept and next release is a summer bop.” The literal queens of classy/sexy concepts and summer concepts.
9MUSES. The underrated queens of synchronization. These women are TALL. With them long ass limbs, it’s honestly so surprising how in sync they are. Basically every title track is a bop, even including what is considered to be one of the worst debut tracks EVER (it’s good in a post-ironic like this is so bad it’s good way). My favorite era was 2nd OT9 era (Dolls-Wild-Gun-Glue). Their company said we finally had nine muses again so let’s crank out FOUR comebacks in 1 year.
Also want to point out this group NEVER won 1st on a music show but peep them album sales. They were definitely heavy hitters but never could jump that hurdle to fully mainstream. (Did you peep fellow K-reactors Sera Ryu btw?👀). Now THIS group is the one with most lineup changes. You actually ended up reacting two 2 videos with 8 members (not the same 8!). 9Muses originally debuted as 9. 4 left almost immediately after debut (one was sooner than the others and they already had her replacement) and then one of the ones that left almost as immediately came back. So they were OT7 for almost a year before the 8th member was added, which was for about another year. Ticket happened during this time. Then the 9th was added and my favorite era/year of 9MUSES is born (and only lasts this 1 year). 3 more members leave around the same time (from original OT9). That means only 3 of the original group are left. 2 new members are added and that brings us to Drama (that was the first release with this OT8). Group never gets back to 9. This lineup lasts 3 comebacks until 3 more members leave around the same time. 2 of which are OT9 and the 3rd was the girl they had on standby from predebut. One of the 5 left goes on hiatus, so the other 4 form a unit NINE MUSES A. Hiatus girl eventually leaves so the subunit is now the full unit and the promote under the full unit name as 4. They had 3 comebacks and then they disbanded, only 1 of OT9 making it to the end. We fully blame the company for the mismanagement.

I didn't follow kpop back in the day but had a bunch of friends who showed me mostly SNSD, so most of this is new to me. Cry Cry sounded like it was right out of the Britney era. Lovey Dovey though, that's my image of T-ara, alongside Bo Peep and Roly Poly. I had friends that would share these ironically just to inflict upon me these annoying earworms that repeat ad infinitum. Miss A had the most modern looking camerawork out of the bunch. There was a part in Ticket that reminded me of Rainbow - A and I was surprised that it actually was a Sweetune song. I have to agree, Sistar and 9muses seem like the most interesting overall.

  • @HinataJD

my god you were sick for listening to sistar before 9muses lmao. but you listened to ticket and drama yess!!!! You got to hear the two different sounds from the member line up prior to 2015, and the members after. nine muses had quite a few member changes since debut. by their last release in 2019, there was only 1 original member (hyemi). They had a terrible company is all i can say rly. If you decide to check out more title tracks i recommend Figaro, News, Wild, Sleepless Night, and Remember from their 6th ep (they have two tracks titled Remember).
btw i wanted to ask if double chorus is common in pop music? and if you could give me an example or two of kpop songs that do have them? (i know nothing about music)
thanks for reacting to nine muses!

    • @Koko3op
      @Koko3op  Год назад +2

Ohhhhh for sure! Some of my favourite double choruses are f(x) signal, which I discovered in my recent album reaction. Ateez - the letter and Red Velvet - Queendom. They actually are quite common cos I thought of these 3 songs pretty quickly ha. Also SNSD - Mr Mr Let me know what you think.
In some music terms the double chorus can sometimes be called a hook or the first chorus chorus might be called a pre chorus again.

to be fair a lot of older productions don’t have as many changes as recent releases 😭 so i wish you did old and new for the groups instead of like 2 old for some or 2 new for others because the new ones are always likely to have more production diversity as the times have evolved and changed, but loved the video and i hope you do more 2nd gen groups! (you’d LOVE secret! very beyoncé inspired and actually the originators of the dual-concept a lot of groups do now; they were cute and sexy! aoa, girls day you would ADOREEE and 4minute is always fun too!)
a bit of a musical background for these groups if you’d like to take the time to read it to help with your choices!
    on the groups:
t-ara: contrary to belief one could argue they’re actually the vocally strongest group amongst them all (even sistar if you take away hyolyn lol) they’re actually a ballad pop group which you KINDA picked up on when you said that their voices were very different and unique and more somber and solemn, however you were on the nose saying their music seems to be made to go viral, the majority of their title tracks are very edm crazy hitmaker and “I CANT GET THIS SONG OUT OF MY HEAD” fun fact: among like the top 10 highest selling idol songs in south korean history t-ara has three of them LMAO, brief discography note: very much as i described you’ll hear edm tracks and then you’ll hear strong vocal tracks but not auto-tune heavy, you’ll really hear their vocals!
miss A: an extremely strong group, i don’t know where you heard that they might comeback but a miss A reunion chances are at 0% i fear, they have member discourse with one of them 😭 their title tracks are actually genuinely unique for the times; i’m not sure which songs you reacted to because i didn’t watch on paetron yet! but jyp really gave their songs strongly unique productions such as touch and hush, even compared to tracks now those still stand out in my honest opinion
brief discography note: a VERY strong discography as well, you genuinely cannot go wrong with jyp group discographies ESPECIALLY in the 2nd gen, you’ll hear a variety of stuff!
wonder girls: truly special…. not only did they revive kpop and are legends and pioneers (especially with Tell Me lol, they’re the ones who invented killing parts and the main reason groups did keypont choreo!) but their sound developed and matured and grew up with everyone, their rebrand with them turning into a band is legendary i can see why you yearned for more in i feel you chorus but like why so lonely, they were like newjeans before newjeans lol very vibey and melodical heavy when they revamped VERY easy to listen to and love; their title tracks pre-band revamp are extremely strong and hits for a reason!
brief discography note: you are absolutely right i’ve been watching you for a while now and the REBOOT album (the one with I Feel You as title) you would absolutely love, it’s an entire 80’s inspired album SELF-COMPOSED, SELF-WRITTEN and the music is PHENOMENAL i always tell people that’s the best kpop album ever made and even if you don’t choose them PLEASE react to this album it is a REAL TREAT! the rest of their discography is really good as well!
sistar: HITMAKERS. they have the most number one singles for a reason their title tracks are extremely very feel-good and almost all of them are of a summerish kind of vibe, like i said their earlier music is definitely edm heavy as well and hyolyn is definitely one of the best vocalists kpop has ever had without a doubt (ailee number one of course lol) but she’s definitely top 5!
brief discography note: their discography is pretty solid in my opinion, they don’t have a discography where you’d hear a song and be like “this could’ve been a title track!” which is kind of a good thing if you look at it; starships puts their all into title tracks tbh
9muses: their title tracks are SOOOOOOOO good, it’s always been a mystery as to why they never got popular but they were decently popular i would never call them “nugu” it’s one of those everyone knows them but people don’t really stan them type of things
brief discography note: i’ll be honest, as much as i love them compared to the others their discography is on the weaker side but there’s a few gems!

T-Ara's choreos were "simple" because they were meant to be danced by the audience in the clubs. They were "popular" dances, not just for the performers. And it worked. People actually danced those dances.

I like all of these groups! But if we're talking about vocals, Sistar and Nine Muses really stand out, despite numerous line-up changes for Nine Muses.
If you want to check 3rd generation girl groups, I recommend BESTie. Try their songs Excuse Me and Love Options! And if you want vocals, check out their cover of "A Goose's Dream." If you want to check out 3rd Generation boy groups, please please check out VIXX if you haven't yet. I recommend Shangri-La, Fantasy, and Scentist if you really want to hear the vocals of all the members. :>

Lovey Dovey is a club classic that I think it was supposed to mirror those viral dance hits that were released in the West around 2011-2012 (Party Rock Anthem) so it’s supposed to be repetitive and give that “ear candy” feel. Their group is pretty much known for the dance classics like Roly Poly which was the best selling song in 2011 in Korea. It was at that year that they were about to dethrone SNSD actually and SM tried their best to do shady shit as usual.
Wonder Girls had the classics too from their debut till they were sent to the US which pretty much changed their popularity when SNSD came out with Gee. Nobody was THAT K-pop song back in 2008 that were all over RUclips and how a lot of people became K-pop fans 🤭
SISTAR is the OG Summer Queens! Only certain groups/soloists back then were able to release songs in the summer that were meant for summer and gain traction but SISTAR was able to take that title since they always made a comeback during that season. They’re one of the few girl groups in Korea who has 9 consecutive #1 songs till their disbandment.
9MUSES deserved better! One of the many reasons they never made it was because they debuted as a 9 member girl group in 2010 which was literally during SNSD’s peak so everyone was kind of side-eyeing them as a replica of some sort. Most of the members were scouted as models so they’re known to be one of the tallest girl groups ever. They had so many underrated classics that just never got the wins they truly deserved. Star Empire literally one of the worst companies ever to exist 🫥

Someone reacting to Nine Muses in 2023!? Whaaat!?
If you're looking for Nine Muses with 9 members, you'll only get that from No Playboy (their debut in 2010), Ladies (also 2010; performed as a follow-up with one member replaced), and their releases from 2013 (Dolls, Wild, Gun, and Glue). They've had members leave (or be kicked, very unfortunately) and join throughout the years with a total of 14 members. Of the 8 that you saw in Ticket, only 5 are the same members that you saw in Drama and Hurt Locker.
Fun fact: Only one member who was part of the lineup at debut was still with the group when they officially disbanded as a quartet in 2019.

I’ve gotta wonder if T-ara’s “Lovey Dovey” M/V was inspired by LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem,” what with the dance zombies and shuffling dance. I mean, clearly there’s some MJ “Thriller” in there in the end, but LMFAO was more contemporary.

Something I'd like to note for 2nd gen groups from small companies like 9Muses and T-ARA - they have members who would slay adlibs but they ended their contracts in debt. Groups pay for studio time and their payments for activities go to their companies with pennies split among members. Usually the busier members buy food for the ones who get no schedules. I think it's good as you explore them to keep in mind small companies will buy less expensive songs and the groups can't afford extra studio time. They are extremely exploitative and in the case of T-ARA and 9Muses sometimes members are forced to do... gross stuff. There is a very famous CEO who was sent to prison for what he forced artists to do... and the CEO of 9Muses' company was publicly threatened by a male idol and through 'negotiations' the remaining members of 9Muses were allowed to finish their contracts in peace (don't applaud said idol; he is not innocent).

I understand the want for vocals and with some groups it's fair... like Fei is Miss A's star vocalist but is Chinese (SM is not the only company iffy toward Chinese members). Upside, her career in China is doing amazing so she did get the stardom she deserves.
