Someone explain that scene to me, the holiday who shot at Riddler wasn't the real Holiday and instead someone working for Falcone right? That way he could scare Riddler into letting everyone know that Falcone was looking for holidays' identity.
This has to one of the best Batman stories along with Killing Joke and Dark Knight Returns imo. The element of mystery just keeps you guessing. I'm surprised they haven't adapted it into animation yet.
Killing Joke is mediocre at best. People just love to talk about how great it was, but if you pit another name in place of Alan Moore's then people wouldn't give the book a second thought. It's like when Stephen King writes a boring or bad book. Nobody wants to be the guy to say it isn't great.
My interpretation of this is that Hilda was killing until New Year's, when Harvey failed to kill Alberto. Since Alberto escaped, he started committing the Holiday killings, particularly Maroni's men, the people in Maroni's restaurant, Maroni's father, the coroner, Carla and Maroni himself. Afterwards, Dent only killed Falcone and Vernon Fields. So basically: Gilda: First Halloween - Christmas Harvey: New Year's and Second Halloween Alberto: Valentine's Day - Labor Day
Truly one of the greatest Batman storys of all time and one of the greatest comics of all time IMO thanks so much for making this awesome video Comicstorian and Happy Halloween!!!!!! :)
Will deeply miss you Ben. You made comics a lot more accessible for me and easier for me to process through all your videos. Hope you are happy and at peace wherever you are.
I remember reading this a couple years back, and how well executed the mystery element of the story was. I didn’t stop reading from page 1 to the end because the mystery was so engaging
The quintessential Gotham crime story. I wonder if Batman ever figured out that it was really Gilda Dent who was the original Holiday and just never told anyone. Calendar Man did, and Batman has never not solved a case before, and I can see why he'd leave Gilda alone.
*SPOILERS* I really don't see why you left this out Benny... Gilda Dent, wife of Harvey Dent, confesses (in a private monologue) that she was the original Holiday, who murdered the first seven victims. While burning the supposed evidence of her crime, she claimed that she began the murders because Harvey could not settle down and raise a child with her until the Falcone crime family was finally destroyed. In Gilda's confession, she mentions that on New Year's Eve, she had heard of Alberto's murder at sea. Afterwards, Harvey returned home with wet hair, stating that it had been snowing even though he was wearing a hat. She took this as a sign that Harvey himself had taken up killing Falcone family members. As a result, she stopped killing and took a passive role, waiting for Harvey to finish the job so they could settle down.
Except for the fact that her story does not add up. The killing of the Irish Gang took place when she was hospitalized after the explosion. She could not have killed them. Also, how the hell would she be able to walk up to the mob and start shooting them from close range?
Falserizuffer Ezek she did say that she escaped from the hospital, but you’re right, the bomb left her in a wheelchair, so it would be pretty hard to kill people
It's been so long since they made a decent Batman story like this, I thought DC had made a policy against it. Thanks for going back and covering the good ones.
This comic has something so special that none of the others have. The atmosphere, the holidays, the brilliant story, the aesthetic and the characters. The fact that The Batman will be based on this is truly incredible.
I wouldn't expect it to be exact. Technically dark knight was was inspired by it as well (according to Nolan on some aspects of the film), combining year one and long Halloween would be weird if there still doing the origin...
There were more than just few plot elements that made it into the movie. Harvey Dent's fall from grace is the biggest element that both stories have in common.
@@gato23 I kind of forgot. Did Harvey attempt at Alberto and failed and then Alberto seized the moment afterwards? Or did Harvey, as Two Face, only did the last two? I recall how Gilda noticed that Harvey said something about wet hair yet he was wearing a hat. So did Alberto wanted faked his death from the start?
@@gato23 Yeah, there is a commonly known loophole with that though because during the Irish gang killing, Gila was in hospital. I still love the possibility that she was one of the killers though. It's a mystery that is still kinda unsolved, yet it is immensely satisfying. It makes so much sense that Alberto, who was unappreciated his whole life, would claim killings that he didn't do (aka the ones that Gila/maybe Harvey did).
I saw the movie four times now. I dont think I'll ever grow tired of the new animation style in future animated DC movies honestly. I loved every minute of seeing the mystery story progress on who Holiday is. I know Alberto Falcone was Holiday in the comics (spoiler alert), but after watching it I suspect it's actually Harvey Dent. Talking about two heads are better than one. You could tell that Dent has a lot of personal vendetta when working to bringing down the Mob. I am convinced that the Holiday killer is a split personality of Harvey, just building up to his eventual downfall to becoming Two-Face.
I'd buy SOME of the deaths being Harvey, but not Johnny Viti's in the film. Remember, he was going to be a key witness in their case against Falcone, so there's no way Harvey killed him. Someone else, maybe including Gilda sure, but not Harvey
While he’s only in this story briefly, I still think Joker’s appearance here, and in Dark Victory as well, are some of his best appearances in comics. It’s nothing complicated, you just get Joker doing what he does best, with a fantastic writer, and a wonderful character design to back it all up.
Such a great story! When I worked at the theatre we partnered with a local shop to give copies away during some of the Batman showings. I got my copy that way as well. Such a great read.

Ghost Hyperhex wow... He's gave the answer n they still didn't know what he meant and two face gave another answer and that actually made you think.... Wow.. Harvey was still.. Wrkn even tho he went crazy... Awesome
Lemme ask the question we're all bringing up. Did Batman know? I would say we'll never know because the author didn't say but I think he did. From the fact that he wouldn't answer Jim when he was questioned means he entertained the possibility but maybe he just didn't tell because he believed it was Harvey's fault. I've seen enough NTR to know that you have to give your wife a certain amount of attention or things can go bad REAL fast.
So basically Harvey and his wife Gilda was the ones who were actually doing the murders Edit I see now Gilda was the first holiday killer and Alberto was the second
I had a load of things to do at home today, put on a playlist of your videos while doing them and the time flew by while I listened. Thanks for the entertainment great job👍👍
It's amazing the impact this comic had on TDK (2008)...all the little references are A1. The film was a really good adaptation of its source material albeit not a page to page recreation but good adaptation from one medium to another.
I hope an Arkham game is made in the future based around this story. A game like Origins that takes place a little later in the timeline around Asylum.

This story has some serious Godfather vibes to it, and that's one of the reasons I love it.
Logan Smith ikr that's one of the things that makes it so great IMO :)
Logan Smith you too I love it while drinking coffee
Logan Smith which one
fun fact: the writer said he made the falcone family inspired by godfather. that must be why you feel the resemblence
@@itskingpakal Just turn the first page and Falcone basically looks like Don Corleone from the Godfather

TDKR is overrated as fuck. Ugly art, poorly written story, generic Superman, and Joker killing himself was stupid.
Killing Joke is mediocre at best. People just love to talk about how great it was, but if you pit another name in place of Alan Moore's then people wouldn't give the book a second thought. It's like when Stephen King writes a boring or bad book. Nobody wants to be the guy to say it isn't great.

So basically:
Gilda: First Halloween - Christmas
Harvey: New Year's and Second Halloween
Alberto: Valentine's Day - Labor Day
But how would Gila know to suddenly stop at the same time Alberto decided to take over? The whole ending is such a convoluted mess.
Maybe it was Harvey all along and that he made Alberto his patsy. Gilda maybe hallucinate the whole thing to cope with Harvey Dent becoming Two Face.
I think it was Gilda and Harvey. I think Alberto was always meant to just be a red herring.
