Amazing system. Last days I was flatterning my first slab with diy sled. Your videos helped a lot and I was thinking all the time about your professional system for this job.
I'm used to larger, corded routers ruclips.net/user/postUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.
Nice setup. Seems to me that this would be an ideal project to automate. A few servo motors and a controller and you have a cnc slab surfacer. Probably not something you have time to do yourself but I'm sure some manufacturer will get on it. Enjoy your videos
I would love to have the time to make one of them.
Good idea with the rubber strips no need to worry able clamps getting hit.
The only change I would suggest is a hose clamp to keep it above the rails.
That set up and titman bit deals with the removal of wood well easy ,good dust extraction aswell i thought mate,another good knowledgeable video ,cheers mate 👌.

I'm just getting into this stage of woodworking and trying to wrap my head around the router sled options and techniques, so very much appreciated this video. The aluminium extrusions are definitely the way to go. Thanks for taking the time to do it, very helpful!
The table saw is an ugly product because: you have to move a 4x8 board over the table and that is very heavy. Then the shop needs 16 ft, at least, to use a table saw. I offer you for free my invention "Parallel Guided Power Saw" you can see on your tube. You can use one and even manufacture it and sell it. I will give you all the information for free. Is very simple and great product and one day will eliminate the table saw, the router table and even drill press for some application, where we need holes for more than about 10 ft from the board edge.

You could add a sled attachment for circular saws and a sander for this system. It could be a jointer, surfacer, and planner all in one

Good video. I’m not a woodworker, but I’ve done some woodworking projects in the past and I was taught to go with the grain if at all possible. I would think even with a high powered router it seems to make sense and go with the grain like you do instead of cross grain.
You have to remember that router is spinning in a circular patern on the wood. lit's pretty hard to go exactly with the grain of the wood

What router do you use, mine (not a tot) has a problem with 3mm depth of cut. The router is slowing down when im cutting so i guess i need one with a constant rpm even with resistance, also using a 45mm bit.

I would imagine cutting the slab into narrower pieces levelling and then gluing it back into a slab saves thickness in some cases. I am going to build this sled in the near future it is just excellent.
If you cut the slab in a few pieces and then you´ll glue them back together, this table will have a totally different value than the table made from one whole slab. The first way is woodworking, and the second is an art :)

Do you use a chuck extender? How far below the carriage does the bit reach? Do you need to pack up slabs to within 10mm of carriage?
Up to 50mm under the bottom edge of the cross rails depending on the specific router bit and extension

I'm getting a lot of burning into wood. I have used new trend (£70) router bit 1/2 in same festool 2200
it lasted like 20 mins until it started burning

not sure on final cost , I already had lots of profile from other projects . The TOT sled is not cheap but it is the best out there by a mile ..!!!! if your not use a router sled on expensive slabs and furniture sale you can alway make on from MDF etc .. I used to do that they work ok .. Best Andy

How do you think this set up would go on a regular tabletop made from solid hardwood boards? As an alternative to a wide belt sander..
its a alt to a planner not a wide belt sander!!! and yer with good sharp cutter it work amazing !
Manor Wood thanks. Yes but you obviously go straight from the router to and orbital and I was hoping to do the same to skip the step of paying for someone to run it through a wide belt sander.
If it fits my wide belt I go straight to that after the router sled it just easier to get things dead flat
Nice economical machine. I have several large oak slabs that need flattening....do you think it would be practical to scale up the design to fit slabs that are 4 ft. x 13 ft? (1200 x 4000 mm) Finding aluminum rail that long might be difficult.
Looks like you modified your original design using linear rail to the cross slide to using the TakeOneToo slide that uses ball bearings.
Is the TakeOneToo unit held firmly down like your original so that the cutting force can't lift the router?
I think this one is modified to 4x2 m and you need 4,5 x 1,7m (for 4 x 1,2 m slabs)

It Isn't held down , but I have never had it lift as the sled and 2200 router are very heavy
4m long and 1.2m wide is not a problem the rail comes up to 6m!!
Actually, it is held down when you lock it with locking levers during parallel moves along the grains. A weight of cross profiles with the router and TOT! Complete pack, in this case, is approx. 30 kg. But as Andy correctly mentioned, even the weight of the router + router cart (approx.15kg) is sufficient against the lifting.

Why not just set the router bit to the lowest depth of the lowest part of the slab?
2mm is about max you can remove in one pass , best practice is start high and work down
