- this is what rock and roll sounds like...
so... I noticed this "original" version was not up here on RUclips. this is a different night or something from that 90's CD re-issue (which was described as the same show, but the full show) - but you can hear differences in some of the song performances, "personality crisis" & "frenchette" come to mind - so here it is.
I don't own this sound recording and no copyright infringement is intended. this is a LONG out of print album which was a "promo only" when released, so i posted it for historical preservation. the copyright is 1978 blue sky records, which was a subsidiary of CBS at that time, which is now probably owned by Sony.
songwriting credit:
funky but chic (johansen/sylvain)
not that much (johansen)
build me up buttercup (d'abo/maculay)
I'm a lover (verno/rao/trask)
Donna (johansen)
frenchette (johansen/sylvain)
Lonely tenement (johansen)
girls (johansen/sylvain)
personality crisis (johansen/thunders)
produced by David Johansen
mixed by David Johansen, Peter flynn, Dave still
performed by David Johansen, Syl Sylvain, Johnny Rao, Thomas trask, buz verno, Frankie larocka
vinyl transfer by Trevor johnsen
fair use: I don't own this and copyright infringement is not intended. I do not intend to monetize this. All credit to the original performers, songwriters, owners, their companies and those who hold the copyright. This is an out of print vinyl record and is poster here for entertainment purposes and to document this wonderful and historic release.
Sylvain & David wrote great songs together and played spectacularly together, and this recording shows it. Long live The Dollettes!
do yourself a favor and go buy the remastered expanded version of this album, it sounds different and it has more songs...

I saw them in 1978 at a modest venue. The place self identified as a nightclub. It was a literal brick shoebox, a couple of 100 feet long, and maybe 50 feet wide. The band set up at one end. You could see the whites of their eyes. The wall behind them was obscured by Marshal amps stacked two high. We had to wait outside while they did a sound check. Oddly enough, it seemed like they went through the entire set. The vocals were completely understandable through the brick wall. David had a tremendous amount energy, and command of the stage, such as it was. The stage was really the floor. Before Personality Crisis ended David walked off the stage. Syl came up stage and begged the audience to yell and clap for him to come back. Then he ran off stage and brought David back by carrying with one arm, but David ran off stage again. Syl ran after him and dragged him back, and he finished Personality Crisis. This performance was one, if not the best that I have seen. As I said, it was a fairly small space, and this was the loudest performance I have ever heard, but still mixed to perfection. My ears truthfully rang for 3 days.
A little tinnitus anyone.
Hanx for sharing that . I only can listen to it over & over . What sound I'm obsessed with this album much too much too much
You saw a good show, pity you don't remember what happened...
Have loved this album for 45 years,..... those guitars !!
Johnny Rao, one of the greatest unknowns ever...
I saw David Jo and this group at the Showplace in Dover N.J. They blew the roof off of the place! I have the original radio station only pressing of this album. Its is a keeper!
Thank you very much for your upload! 40 years have passed since I listened to this spine-shivering killer LP.
I lost the LP and then bought the official CD album with more songs remixed in 90’s. I was disappointed with the mix of the official CD, as I was much impressed with the mix and sound quality of the original LP.
Now I feel as if my long lost friend came back to me at last!
Thanks man, thought I was going mad when I listened to the other, apparently full show. It just didn’t sound right, especially the mix and sound on Donna. This is such great rock n roll. Have treasured this LP for 46 years now.
One of the greatest one n done bands in seventhies
What does that mean?
Thank you!! Dollette butterflyin
I heard a show at The Paradise in Boston that was broadcasted live with The David Johansen band supporting Blondie. I had a tape of it once.
You mean Blondie Chaplin, and that was a different band...
Great album, the best Johansen ever did after the Dolls. I've got the LP. The CD release ups the game with an encore featuring both Sylvain Sylvain and Johnny Thunders though.
This is The Bottom Line show with Andy Warhol in the house. Found it on CD quite a few years ago 👌🏻
Funky but RnR!
Oh no, not you again...
Is that the sound of the roof lifting off during Girls?
Bottom Line was one of the most ideal venues ever, sorely missed...
DAVID JO!
The one and only 🙌
👍👍👍
I have the cassette version of this, which is probably the same as the CD version, I would think. Great concert performance by all.
Yep, same as the CD with excellent performances of "looking for a kiss" "babylon" & "cool metro" among others. A must have for any Dolls fan!
@@trevor-johnsen Big Dolls, Johansen, Syl Sylvain fan. Johansen' New Year's Eve "Live It Up" LP is another excellent live document with a killer band worth checking out, as is his first solo and "In Style" albums (have all on LP). Also have Syl Sylvain's first two LP's on vinyl. They all along with the Dolls' albums would make a pretty good playlist of great New York rock from the period (must include Johnny Thunders' So Alone LP, too, which I also have on vinyl...lol). Stay Rockin'.🎸🎵
