I store my ears of corn in the freezer and they last a year. I've even had them last 2 years but usually, I eat them well before. They go directly from the field to the freezer. Leave the husks on as they are and just stack them like logs on a shelf. The freeze kills any bugs that might be in them and the husks protect the kernels. Even after a year they taste just picked fresh. I have a shelf in my freezer dedicated just for corn. Try it, it works!
Thanks for that Meri....I have never frozen them before and I always wondered if they'd turn chewy or starchy. Good to know! I have about 120 ears, so I need to get freezing! :-)

I, also, am a first year corn grower although I've been gardening for 50 years! Also, like Karen Kobo I watched a lot of videos on growing corn. Most of them focused on planting corn not the after care and growth. Your video had it all! I wish you had been around back in June when I planted it. I had no idea what the growth sequence was and wondered why the tassel showed up before the silk. I hope you post other videos as concise and informative as this one!

Glad to see someone had success this year. We had the least sun, in Germany, since records began and high humidity. Lost 50 tomato plants, from 54. Capsicums are slow but producing. Enjoy your bounty Jeff!!!

I had not planted corn in about 32 years so when I planted corn this year I did a big no no. I planted 3 varieties right next to each other. I can't explain the details but some corn is supposed to be isolated. I think I planted that variety smack dab in the middle. It was supposed to be a super sweet hybrid. It was so very starchy I didn't feel it was edible. The other 2 varieties turned out fine. This year I'll grow only one variety. It's supposed to be a super sweet corn that you can save the seed for next years planting. I purchased it from Baker Creek. Cheers to planning your 2022 garden.

So interesting to learn about corn, mine did not do so well this year as there has been a drought and I had to conserve water.
I hear you on that one.....heat wave after heat wave here and the corn just used soooooo much water. Its definitely a resource hog.

Hi Jeff, a timely video as it now time to start thinking about planting corn down here. I usually have great success with this crop. For us we usually pick our corn around Christmas time and i freeze most in plastics bags for the winter. Cheers

I'm in a rainy not very sunny area of Oregon. I have a North facing patio that I do a container garden on. I was suprised my corn grew at all but I got one 🌽. I was also pleasantly suprised at the amount of Tomatoes not cracked and Jalapenos I got.

Thank you for this video. My corn has tasseled but no silks are showing. Glad to know the silks will come later. My first time planting and the corn looked so pretty, but I got really worried when I have no silks.

best performance in corn planting. planting the seeds 2-2 1/8 inch with the tip pointing down. Also to maximize pollination one can help with dusting the silks. Us a paper to collect the pollen then drop on the silks. easy!

Hello Jeff from Singapore! Have about 8 shoots going but they seem to have stagnated at about 4-6 inches tall for about 2 weeks. Any idea why? TIA! That ASMR breaking off of ripe corn was music to my ears
Very interesting. Wonder if its weather related? At about a month of age too is when they really start to take up the nutrients...so could be a nitrogen issue?

New subscriber here. This was my first year to grow corn. However, the ears were covered with ants and beetles. What should I have used to prevent this.
Why plany at 6" when you know you will cut out every other plant? Seems like seed savings could be had if planted at 1' not 6"... really wanting to know...
Because not every seed germinates. Plant at 1 foot spacing and you can have huge gaps in your corn block when some seeds don't make it. The other method is to plant 2-3 seeds per hole every foot, and then cut the smallest ones down if more than 1 germinate. With corn, 80% germination is the rate you often get.

Wait. You only need a couple of inches of soil? I'm doing Raised beds but do not want to run corn in my limited bed spaces. [[lot of shade so beds take up the Sunny areas. My soil is packed clay/sand and even a rototiller struggles to cut into it so the raised beds. I do have a large ground area not getting the raised beds-my source of metal for the sides got cleaned out so...wood pallets, flat, filled with good soil perhaps? That would be about 4" deep with around 2" spacing between the top boards. Thoughts?
Oops. Rewatched. Foot of soil. Hmmm...thinking of options. I grew a few stalks in some 20 gallon Tree planters one gets at the Tree Store...my boss let me have them. Had maybe eight staalks in three buckets. Deep enough, have maybe 10 of them can possibly et more....three of those kiddie pools maybe 4' round and around 10 or so inches deep...knocked some extra holes in them with my tomahawk after the pig busted them up...
@@mindofmadness5593 Ha ha yeah, 4 inches of soil won't be enough! They aren't crazy deep-rooted...but they do go down a foot or more! I've seen clusters of 4 in 20 gallon pots, and then those pots spaced closer together.....it worked out well for this one garden I saw. Definitely experiment for your setup! :-)

I am hoping, if things do not go South here first with the insanity of this country, to bring in more loads of soil and start amending the area I mentioned above but it is a one-man disabled show at this point so limited funding and Crip Me. lol
What do you do with the winter wheat after to cut them down

What fertilizer schedule do you follow for corn?
Hi lynn, I only feed corn twice. Once when it hits about 4" tall, and then again when the tassels first appear.

most people would have dug out whatever lived in that bed before planting. you put down paper and a little bit of soil. i like that better.
I never got the female and male just tall stalks. I planted to close together 😢 but I did grow healthy stalks lol just no corn lesson learned.

Well done. I've always heard that for every silk, there's a kernel. The same person also told me, there's always 13 rows of corn on each ear. Is that also true?

Corn only has an even number of rows.

What about harvesting seed?
All you have to do is let the corn fully mature and dry out on the plant! The kernels should be dry and rock hard.

What is the point of planting them 6 inches apart when you're just going to cut them to be 12 inches apart
As mentioned in the video, seeds are cheap. Many crops are multi-sown (think of thinning carrots or beets or radishes...normal for them, right?). If a seed doesn't germinate and you don't over-sow, you're left with a gap, even several gaps. For gravity and wind pollinated plants like corn, that could be a disaster. So no, I don't think 6 cents worth of extra seed is a waste if it can save me time, space, and money within a single crop's lifespan.
I hand pollinate mine...just in case nature didn't do a good enough job.
