  • How do you pick your paper? Do you give it much thought? Or just use what you have available? Are you meticulous in testing your paints on different papers before committing to one? This video is to break down the different types of dry and wet media papers out there, in hopes of giving you a better understanding of why there are so many options. What’s the different between sketching paper and drawing paper? Can I use watercolor on a non watercolor paper? Answers lie within!

This whole video can be summed up with "how close is this to a dry erase board?"

Book implies the drawings will stay in the bound volumn. Pad implies the page will be torn out. Or fall out depending on the quality of your pad.

Then you also have blocks where the pages are bonded to each other on more than one side to keep them flat. I like those but they're pricier so I use them sparingly.

I use a lot of cheap watercolor paper for oil pastels and experiments with acrylics. Sometimes I just want to see if an idea works visually. I can apply a thin layer of gesso to the paper and paint on that. If I go too heavy handed with the gesso the paper can buckle a bit. To help keep things flat I tape the paper to a board with painter's tape around the edges. Then I can play around with my ideas on the cheap.

I would not think you are a criminal.
My Favourite paper is actually card stock. (because I like the smoothness, and it can handle some wet media too, and it sturdy for some of my crafty projects)... I also really like regular printer paper, when I don't need the extra strength of card stock. ... I'm sure their not "archival"... but they last long enough for me. =) My main medium is coloured pencil, or a combo of water colour crayons and coloured pencils.
Having said all that, I use Canson XL Mixed Media for my art journals.
Your video is a good one. =) I'm glad you uploaded it. =)

I had lots of bad experiences in art classes in public schools. Probably the worst offender is newsprint. There's very little it can be used for and nothing besides newspapers that it's really good for. I get that newsprint is cheap. When you try to get your students to use newsprint for everything it just leads to frustration. I was put off of art by the frustration caused by art classes. Teachers, please, say no to crappy art supplies. They do more harm than good.

wait what- they really do that? isn’t newsprint just for sketching?

@@jiaxii that's the problem. It can be drawn on, so lots of people think that's good enough. Back in the day, Newspaper publishers donated left over roll ends to schools, so the teachers had it in abundance. It was awful.

Thank you, this is helpful. 👍 But I have questions.. I love to paint with acrylics on watercolor paper (fine art and mixed media) and am looking to replace my brushes. Is it ok to use the tougher acrylic brushes on wc paper? Will they be too tough for the paper? I mostly use Strathmore but am really liking cotton paper also. Should I stick to softer brushes? Any suggestions would be awesome as I am confused lol! 😃 Thank you! 😁

Hi Michael, Mold made watercolor papers, such as Fabriano, Winsor Newton, or Arches, are pretty resilient because of the internal and external sizing. I don't know how heavy handed you are, but as long as you are not scrubbing or scumbling, you should be OK.

I used Bee paper sketch pad with water colour and it wrinkled baaddllyy! I found that is only good for dry media like pencil or coloured pencils, etc.
