It makes sense because Jack is so different from all the other Disney princes. He has this fascinating elegance in his presence. He's sophisticated, polite and interesting. Even his gestures and the way he walks looks so graceful and beautiful. I don't know... a guess I just have a thing for people who are charming like him. Yeah I know that he's actually not a person at all and he's not even real.
1:12 ''Oh somewhere deep inside of these bones, an emptiness began to grow. There's something out there far from my home. A longing that I've never known...'' This is my favorite part of this song.
I always watch it for the first time on October 1st to mark that we're in the Halloween month and close to Christmas! And maybe one more time in December :)
I think this movie is fantastic in how Jack, the main character, is portrayed. Most people make main characters with morally likable traits like honesty, humbleness, etc. Here, we see Jack as an arrogant vain character who absolutely has it all when looked at through a certain perspective, yet he feels unhappy with his life (death?) and still wants more, even if it means upsetting a delicate balance and taking what's not his. It gives him so much room to grow in this movie, even when everything goes to shit, his first reaction is more or less, "Oh pity me, I've messed everything up, but pity me!" Then it's "Well it shouldn't be just MY fault!" Just great personality design that breaks the mold. Edit: So apparently in the seven years that this comment existed, RUclips decided not to tell me about it until just now when I received a new comment. And I want to elaborate on this comment further because it looks like (from the comment's section) what I typed out REALLY got misconstrued by a couple of people. People are assuming that because I said Jack is arrogant, vain, and yearning that I think he's a bad character or an unlikable character. NO! I think Jack's charming, endearing, and delightful to watch BECAUSE of these flaws! Everyone missed the part where I said "It gives him so much room to grow in this movie", because while he starts off selfish and malcontent with his life, after having so many downfalls caused by his negative character traits, he takes accountability for his actions ("I hope there's still time to set things right!"), learns to see other people and truly listen to them (Sally), and ultimately reignite the spark in doing what he did best (being the Pumpkin King). And in terms of "a perfect life", when I said that, a lot of people ignored the "when looked at through a certain perspective". WE as the audience can obviously understand he's going through a depression. But no one in HalloweenTown for the life (death?) of them could understand why their beloved Pumpkin King went missing for an entire day after a successful Halloween, and then suddenly came back wanting to do a brand-new and foreign celebration. Jack is not a standard Disney protagonist; he has character flaws that play into his ultimate downfall, and has admirable qualities that help him to rise up again.
He's not exactly vain he's just having an existential crisis and doesn't feel he's being challenged he has to do the job and he wishes he could give up
+TheChildofAuraReborn Well, this can be seen from a different perspective, itself. It shows that even someone who 'has it all' doesn't. The emptiness he sings about seems genuine, despite his spoilt perspective - because even with his gains, even with all his power, he only knows one routine, one event through the year. He's a powerful being, but still a one-trick pony, and as he said, it's something he would give up his power to fill. At the end I believe he fills it with Sally.
real description of jack: he ussally is all happy , energetic and likes to do his work every year but he gets bored of halloween . he is too curious that ends up loving christmas . when he has a idea he likes to always keep his mind in that idea and nothing can change his mind and that's why nobody could kill his idea to make christmas his own even he ussally doesn't think in nothing more than his whishes and ideas so that's why he couldn't find out about what sally feels for him or the disgust of santa to jack when he first met him
There are few who'd deny, at what I do I am the best For my talents are renowned far and wide When it comes to surprises in the moonlit night I excel without ever even trying With the slightest little effort of my ghostlike charms I have seen grown men give out a shriek With the wave of my hand and a well placed moan I have swept the very bravest off their feet Yet year after year it's the same routine And I grow so weary of the sound of screams And I Jack the Pumpkin King Have grown so tired of the same old thing Oh, somewhere deep inside of these bones An emptiness began to grow There's something out there, far from my home A longing that I've never known I'm a master of fright and a demon of light And I'll scare you right out of your pants To a guy in Kentucky I'm Mister Unlucky And I'm known throughout England and France And since I am dead I can take off my head To recite Shakespearean quotations No animal nor man can scream like I can With the fury of my recitations But who here would ever understand That the Pumpkin King with the skeleton grin Would tire of his crown, if they only understood He'd give it all up if he only could Oh, there's an empty place in my bones That calls out for something unknown The fame and praise come year after year Does nothing for these empty tears
Main part about him why hes my favorite Disney character is that hes creative and the fact how the poor Jack felt bored and depressed, him experienceing the same old things over and over, and something part of him is craving the new and different experience he wishes to have. Adventure or more.
I don't know why, but there is something oddly satisfying about seeing Jack walking up the hill at 1:12, and then walking back down as the hill uncurls at 2:40. But while he is standing atop the curled ledge, Jack stands silhouetted by the perfectly round full moon. As Jack makes his way back down, the spiral of the hill unfurls as smoothly as ever, which is a pretty impressive feat in stop-motion. But, one impressive detail is how it extends preciously to meet the terrain below, and then it seems to retract once Jack steps off, presumably to its former position. It's honestly not surprising that this song is the highlight and one of the most defining shots from this stop-motion movie from nearly 3 decades ago.
"Oh, somewhere deep inside of these bones, an emptiness began to grow." Jack Skeleton. I know how that feels, there are so many things I miss in life: Fun Forest, video stores, there are so people and places long gone.
When Sally says “Jack, I know how you feel” immediately after this song, that hits me in the feels EVERY TIME because she’s pretty much saying exactly what I’m thinking. That’s why I love this song so much: it’s so relatable! I mean, come on, who hasn’t felt like this at least one point in their life? P.S. Who knew Danny Elfman was such a great singer!?!
I often resonate with Jack in this film, the joy of the praise but secretly hating doing the same thing over and over (insanity) knowing that there's a better world and life out there but always held back by life's circumstances

"No animal nor man can scream like I can". I always found it sort of interesting that people for some reason don't like to think of themselves as animals.
30 years later and this will never not be my favorite movie of all time. I remember seeing this iconic shot at 2:40 for the first time in a trailer, and it stuck with me for the rest of my life. I had to have been maybe 5 years old at the time.
In my school there are hills and me and my friends were in the hills and I pretended I was Jack and started singing and I missed a step idk how and I went rolling until I got to the bottom of the hill I was a rolling Jack😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😅
nope i can site the whole movie >.< give me any scene and i can tell you exactly what is going on and the dialogue i've seen this movie so many times it's a problem and i can watch at a drop of a hat hehe
Jack performs just like how I'd expect a drama or singing teacher to try and teach their pupils how to (but the pupils never have what it takes to perfrom like that). Such expression of emotion in his voice and body language, such dramtic movement.
This has honestly been my one of my all time favorite movies for along time. Jack is one of the greatest main characters. The music in this is absolutely fantastic. And the story is just wonderful. It will always be an amazing movie in my eyes
this song... is talking about real life... it talks about how much we have changed... it tells us how we can have some sort of talent we can be king whatever you think of.. but then that skill fades away... just like how we faded away over madness... it tells us we have to fill that empty hole in our heart.. but it will fill up with madness.. all over again.. Jack gets happy... but then soon he feels empty again.. because the whole can never be filled... we have to fill that hole with happiness and love not rage and madness... it telling us to love... Learn to love
God I honestly relate so much to jack , the feeling of being stuck doing the same thing everyday and wanting something new and exciting to be excited about and passionate .
This is my favorite childhood movie. The beautiful animation, the design, the songs, and the story is great. In my opinion. Tim Burton outdid himself with this one. This wasn't your average Disney movie, it was darker. I loved it. I hope Tim Burton keeps up the amazing work.
rewatched the movie by accident, and now at 34 i understand (and feel) Jack better than ever i have everything, but i don't think i've felt happy or complete in a decade gotta steal somebody's christmass i guess
I LOVE THIS SONG! I always thought Jack symbolized a beloved celebrity but he is still very modest about his fame. He gets lonely though because he wants to be loved for who he is and not what he is.
I think this is a pretty unique song. Many Disney songs are about making dreams come true, which, don't get me wrong, are amazing. But this one's about a guy who pretty much has it all, and is not happy. Not because he's greedy, but because he has nothing left to dream for. I guess it's like what Rapunzel said in Tangled: "What if it is everything I dreamed it would be? What then?"
I think his face is rather amazing. They had to create tons of different models for each and every expression and blink. But I totally agree. Such an amazing character. It's films like this that make me love stop-motion animation films and Burton/Disney films in general. :)
Aahh! The Nightmare Before Christmas! I have loved this movie since I was 5-6! I would walk around a yarn store with iPod in hand singing Jack's Lament! I feel sorry for the little girls and boys today who haven't even heard of this movie, and only sing that annoying song Let It Go. I loved Jack Skellington SO MUCH. Fuck Frozen, I want to erase every child's mind set on Frozen to The Nightmare Before Christmas. There will be no other movie greater than this one! All hail The Pumpkin King and Tim Burton! My art would not be good if I had not seen this movie! :3 Jack will always be my boyfriend, ALWAYS!
Amelia SquarePants Haha, I agree. I prefer The Nightmare Before Christmas more than Frozen, I mean, Frozen was ok but.. The Nightmare Before Christmas was amazing.
Agreed on little kids singing on frozen. On thanksgiving my little cousin (4) she started singing do you want to build a snowman, so I looked at her and started singing jacks lament. Her life changed forever XD
Lizzie Pompa Great thing to do, my nephew hates frozen but loves this movie when I showed him it on Netflix. Now it's next to Toy Story on his list. :3
Oh get over it. The only significant difference between this and Frozen is the generation difference. The Nightmare before Christmas was a part of your childhood, so of course you would like it a lot more than Frozen. That doesn't mean that Frozen is a bad movie. Why can't people just appreciate art for what it is instead of trying to compare them?
This movie is my childhood, to this day being 19 I still watch it before Ed almost every night, no shame. Tim Burton is the man, this movie is timeless
It's funny that no matter how many times I watch this movie, I still cannot find a single problem with it. The characters are easy to relate to and likable, the story is solid, the music is Phenomenal, the animation is fantastic, and the voice acting is brilliant. Now I don't believe that there's a such thing as "The Greatest Movie Ever Made" but by God this movie comes close.
A movie I've always been able to enjoy, and a character I've always been able to relate to. The songs are brilliant, and different to any other musical. They tell a story in pictures that can be felt with sound and visualised with words. They created characters realistic and flawed as we are, like Jack, who has trouble seeing through to the truth of his actions until catastrophe is caused. We feel his sorrow, his anger, pain, joy, excitement, and at end his peace. A character we fall beside then to grow with once more. A story that is fulfilling just as it is strange, endearing, and a window to our own truths and identity in which we must face in our own time. This story encourages us to do so, and it is truly a masterpiece.
The Art and Music is beyond Compare. This was creativity at it's finest, before computers and flash were so over-used for animation. This is a Pure Classic.
msmissjordan1 I thought the same thing. Apparently, Danny did want to do both, but they wanted to go with a professional actor...personally, I would have loved that!
+msmissjordan1 Because it turned out that the voice actor couldn't sing, but he already knew all the lines, since Danny was already on set because he was the music director, it was convenient.
"The fame and praise come year after year, Does nothing for these empty tears" this movie is so beatiful

I have swept the very bravest off their feet
Yet year after year, it's the same routine
And I grow so weary of the sound of screams
And I, Jack, the Pumpkin King
Have grown so tired of the same old thing
Oh, somewhere deep inside of these bones
An emptiness began to grow
There's something out there, far from my home
A longing that I've never known
I'm a master of fright, and a demon of light
And I'll scare you right out of your pants
To a guy in Kentucky, I'm Mister Unlucky
And I'm known throughout England and France
And since I am dead, I can take off my head
To recite Shakespearean quotations
No animal nor man can scream like I can
With the fury of my recitations
But who here would ever understand
That the Pumpkin King with the skeleton grin
Would tire of his crown, if they only understood
He'd give it all up if he only could
Oh, there's an empty place in my bones
That calls out for something unknown
The fame and praise come year after year
Does nothing for these empty tears
Moral of this story; dont let your superiors get bored, just offer up a limb or something.
Such a brilliant soundtrack with excellent lyrics
I really feel bad for jack. Nobody think's he has freedom in his heart. That's do cute and sad♡
+The “Eleventh” Doctor He docent have a heart....
something that i absolutely love the fact that this movie actually makes the voice actors sing.
"No animal nor man can scream like I can". I always found it sort of interesting that people for some reason don't like to think of themselves as animals.
Hmm, we are animals when it comes down to it, but we are in a tier of our own when it comes to the sophistications of life.
until they find the missing link we may never know where the separation occurred

Well, Jack is neither.

I'm here because of some live theatre rendition of this song. gotta say a prefer this version. the voice fits the melody and emotes.
Malcolm Joseph well this one is the original one
30 years later and this will never not be my favorite movie of all time. I remember seeing this iconic shot at 2:40 for the first time in a trailer, and it stuck with me for the rest of my life. I had to have been maybe 5 years old at the time.
In my school there are hills and me and my friends were in the hills and I pretended I was Jack and started singing and I missed a step idk how and I went rolling until I got to the bottom of the hill I was a rolling Jack😂😂😂😂😂😅😅😅😅😅
Jack and jill
Monster High Girls 😂😂😂
Monster High Girls Jack and hill😉
This comment had me rolling 😂😂
Woah, that Jillted me
even before i understood english i loved this song, when i translate the lyrics i felt the emptyness inside of my bones 👻
same here i love the movie before i could English . i could not even read when i fall in love with it.
Merry Christmas Jack Skellington
The definitive shot of this movie. When he walks up the hill with the moon in the sky. Simply amazing.
Anyone here after watching the "live" version and just needed to see it done right?
I am so glad someone else said this. All my friends are excited about the live version and I'm just sitting there like.. NO!
Sarah Collins live version?
Sarah Collins that's a thing?!
♪There are few who deny the original is the best. ♪
This song hits when you're older.
Am I the only one who knows this song word for word and sang with it ?
Me too 💀🎶
You are not.
I know right? I love it so much
Nopeee... XD I do too.
nope i can site the whole movie >.< give me any scene and i can tell you exactly what is going on and the dialogue i've seen this movie so many times it's a problem and i can watch at a drop of a hat hehe
I love the way he sings the word "tears" at the very end of the song. That note is perfect. ♥
The best part is at 1:12
Definitely! :)
yep I love the tune and it sounds so nice
+Avenged Nightmare
I always adored that part in particular, it's cool to see I'm not the only one
I don't really like that part but it's ok ( my opinion)

Jack performs just like how I'd expect a drama or singing teacher to try and teach their pupils how to (but the pupils never have what it takes to perfrom like that). Such expression of emotion in his voice and body language, such dramtic movement.
This has honestly been my one of my all time favorite movies for along time. Jack is one of the greatest main characters. The music in this is absolutely fantastic. And the story is just wonderful. It will always be an amazing movie in my eyes
This is my favorite song in my favorite movie :)
This is Halloween its my favorite
Jack Skellington one of us is an impostor since you love the movie and song you are the impostor i sang the song you love so your welcome
I love this movie and this song is my favorite
This is absolutely beautiful. One of the best movies ever made.
His voice is so beautiful!

this song... is talking about real life... it talks about how much we have changed... it tells us how we can have some sort of talent we can be king whatever you think of.. but then that skill fades away... just like how we faded away over madness... it tells us we have to fill that empty hole in our heart.. but it will fill up with madness.. all over again..
Jack gets happy... but then soon he feels empty again.. because the whole can never be filled... we have to fill that hole with happiness and love not rage and madness... it telling us to love...
Learn to love
That shot of jack in front of the moon is a very well know picture.. so iconic.
God I honestly relate so much to jack , the feeling of being stuck doing the same thing everyday and wanting something new and exciting to be excited about and passionate .
HIS SILHOUETTE AGAINST THE MOON AS HE’S WALKING UP THE CURVING HILL GIVES ME LIFE. Sorry, felt like that had to be in all caps.
As someone who loves animation styles and techniques, this film is a masterpiece.
Oh somewhere deep, Inside of these bones, An emptiness began to grow, There's something out there far from my home, a longing that I've never known...
I'm in a community theater production of Nightmare before Christmas! It's really good!!!
Totally agree. I am super glad that the original actor came back to voice him in video games like Kingdom Hearts.
Loved this as a kid, glad my daughter loves it as much... Such a classic.
I think Jack needs a hug because we all understand how he feels.
This is my favorite childhood movie. The beautiful animation, the design, the songs, and the story is great. In my opinion. Tim Burton outdid himself with this one. This wasn't your average Disney movie, it was darker. I loved it. I hope Tim Burton keeps up the amazing work.
rewatched the movie by accident, and now at 34 i understand (and feel) Jack better than ever
i have everything, but i don't think i've felt happy or complete in a decade
gotta steal somebody's christmass i guess
I LOVE THIS SONG! I always thought Jack symbolized a beloved celebrity but he is still very modest about his fame. He gets lonely though because he wants to be loved for who he is and not what he is.
Listens to this song.
Mom: why are you listening to it. It's not Halloween.
Me: OH THERE'S AN EMPTY PLACE IN MY BONES....
What then?"
‘Oh there an empty place in my heart that calls out for something unknown’ ie. existentialism, the thesis of this song.
I think his face is rather amazing. They had to create tons of different models for each and every expression and blink. But I totally agree. Such an amazing character. It's films like this that make me love stop-motion animation films and Burton/Disney films in general. :)
I think 1:12 and 2:40 is the most beautiful parts, of course the hole song is honest and sad, but these 2 parts are the biggest part about him 💕🤧❤️❤️
This!! My two favorite parts of the song because they hit really hard
I was in LA last month when Danny Elfman was there doing a live show. He came on stage and sang this!
I sure do love a piece from some of our favorite Halloween/Christmas films! 😍
Awesome! my favorite lullaby when i will little . Never gets old.
This movie is a masterpiece! All Frozen got going for it are some pretty visuals but that's about it.
Tim Burton is the man, this movie is timeless
best movie ever! .. i'll never get bored of watching it :D .. this song is just awesome
and since I am dead I can take off my head to recite Shakespearian quotations
Happy 30th anniversary to “The Nightmare Before Christmas”.
Let’s celebrate, people!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
It's almost the 30th anniversary of this movie!!!!!!
so, burnout syndrome, the thing that haunted every single day of my life for some months now.
this song just feels different
Maybe Jack has ADHD?
Danny Elfman.
The Art and Music is beyond Compare. This was creativity at it's finest, before computers and flash were so over-used for animation. This is a Pure Classic.
🦌: 😢 aw, Jack...
🐯: 😭 I can relate!
🧞♂️: 😔 Sounds like you could use a hug.
💀: 😟 Mm-hm...
I love this scene and song. It’s creepy and wonderfully done at the same time. And I love that Jack has dimension to his character
why the hell is this song in my mind 24/7 😁
Bint Almedina same for me nightmare before Christmas is not on Netflix no more 😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😫😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😿😿😿😿😿😣😔😕🙁☹️😣😦😯😰😨😱😧😢😥😥😪😓😭🤕
Bint Almedina because it is a classic
This song hits me in the chest at the chorus.
IT'S SO GOOD
36 years old and I still love this movie lol
This is so good. why didn't Danny just cast to be both voice actor and singer of Jack?
msmissjordan1 I thought the same thing. Apparently, Danny did want to do both, but they wanted to go with a professional actor...personally, I would have loved that!
Jack always sounded a bit to kind and not really menacing in the movie. Danny had both the menacing and kind aspect nailed down.
+msmissjordan1 Because it turned out that the voice actor couldn't sing, but he already knew all the lines, since Danny was already on set because he was the music director, it was convenient.
Cant wait till spooky season.
I can't explain how much I love this movie.
"And since I am dead, I can take off my head to recite Shakespearian quotations" Tom Hiddleston in the afterlife.
That's what I thought!
