It’s not a magic trick so I don’t know why “gurus” have to dance around it. Psych is the key to everything. Take it seriously, teach it clearly and with passion, and you’re teaching makers how to “fish”, and be able to make for a lifetime.

All of this info is a great example of the most essential element of selling retail - know your customer. I'm someone who values a brass and glass necklace from the 1930s waaaay more than some basic sterling/amethyst made today. I'd happily pay $50 for the first one but baulk at paying that for the sterling, unless it's something amazing. I just don't value precious metals/stones, I value history, and that even some 90s glass beads are just so much more beautiful and interesting than an amethyst could ever be. What your customer values is critical knowledge.

This was very useful. Your are definitely not alone with an interest of buying psychology. I would love to see a longer video about pricing psychology or maybe a colorscheme one if there is data out there. Thank you as always for sharing your knowledge.
More videos on marketing, branding, and positioning please. How can you create a brand on Etsy or even your own website using print on demand? Should you incorporate your logo into every design? Should you only print your designs on the back of clothing while printing your logo small on the front corner? How do you position your products for higher sales prices?

Always love your videos Starla but really enjoyed this one! Hope you do make more. You did mention the reason why so few Americans have passports (approx 40%) is because your country is so big but Canada is bigger and approximately 70% have passports here. I think it has more to do with the diversity of places contained within the USA and not the size.

Yes!!! I see so many items for sale in local shops that say "Handmade in Italy"! It definitely gives a more romantic, artisan, or quality-focused feel to those items when marketed to an American audience!

🧙♀️ Re storytelling: my hunch is that the advice to be the wizard guide character and not the hero seems right (can’t remember who that’s from). When people tell us to create a brand story it feels obvious that we take people along on a journey with us as the hero, facing and overcoming challenges etc. But you should place the customer as the hero and you as the Gandalf/Merlin type character. I’m not quite sure how to put this into practice in Instagram posts though 😂

Going back to your 2nd section, I would love to see more about the "visual psychology" of a listing. I have an Etsy shop that sells mostly tshirt/sweatshirts. I always wonder if I'm placing an item correctly in a thumbnail, for instance. If I cut off too much of the model so that you can read the text, it looks "floaty". Also, include color choices in a video. Thanks!
My suggestion with thumbnails is to do some A/B Testing. Made a copy of an item listing and then only change the thumbnail photo and then see which one gets the most views. Also, if you have a listing not performing well, that is always a good first thing to try-swapping out the thumbnail. This does not affect the algorithm in anyway and it's a good way to test to see what your customers are reacting best to.
