Coldplay ready for backlash over eco-friendly world tour - BBC News
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 13 окт 2021
- Coldplay's next tour will partly be powered by a dancefloor that generates electricity when fans jump up and down, and pedal power at the venues.
It's part of a 12-point plan to cut their carbon footprint, two years after the band pledged not to tour until they could do so in a more sustainable way.
Coldplay will also plant a tree for every ticket sold. On their last tour in 2016-17, they played to 5.4 million people. That made it one of the biggest tours of all time, earning more than $500m (£380m).
Singer Chris Martin said he accepted there would be backlash about some of their activities, such as continuing to fly on private jets.
"I don't mind any backlash at all," he said. "We're trying our best, and we haven't got it perfect. Absolutely. We always have backlash for everything."

Funny how people are slamming Coldplay for actually trying to improve but dont target those who aren't doing anything...

CBGBS FOR LIFE
@@MusicWithA147 Yes but the attitude is that with everything we do now we need to have an open mind about what it's doing to the environment. There's nothing wrong with anything if we can limit the impact it has.
@@marchughes4850 WC drummer clearly does not care about the world. when he might be listening to people that say “fuck the environment, lets tour”
Do what exactly?
The fact that Coldplay even considered these things is great. It may be small steps, but at least the steps are being taken. For many artists the environment isn’t even a blip on their radar. And like Chris said they want to take it farther. Thanks Chris, Will, Guy and Jonny for caring enough to take these steps.
@@MusicWithA147 Delete lmao
@@MusicWithA147 well ur clearly wrong so ur call 👌
@@MusicWithA147 “there is no climate crisis” i don’t see how being involved in music gives you a degree in biology but sure
As an environmental engineer: why would I criticize them at all? Yes, it’s far from perfect; yes, there are so many aspects of their tour that can be improved. But environmental development is made of small steps, and it’s SO great to see world famous bands trying their best to make their tours more sustainable. It moves the whole market, gets others to consider why not do the same... it’s something. And it’s a good change in the long run. I applaud them for their attitude and for caring!
Also: now I want so bad to test that dancefloor! Haha
Yes lu ferreira
absolutely agreed
It will change nothing the only meaningful change would be to build an unholy amount of nuclear power plants in order to decrease the use of fossil fuels...
This will not happen because money is fossil fuel.
Change for the better has to begin somewhere by someone in response to something. Well done, Mr. Martin! May your beginnings of change become an accomplished goal for others to follow.
Well said! Totally agree
Beautiful comment and encouraging words thank you
Here's something most people dont know. Coldplay's last tour was the 5th highest grossing tour OF ALL TIME. And you know what they decided to do after that tour? They decided not to go on tour for their next album because of the impact on the environment. Knowing dam well that they couldve made hundreds of millions of dollars they decided not to tour their last album due to the carbon footprint it could create. So by simply not doing one tour they've done more than most. Im proud to be a coldplay fan
Along those lines I've heard artists have been critisized for lip synching on tour, and they go on vocal rest and they say that it's neccesary to make their voice last because they tour SO much. Well why not tour less to make your voice last the whole tour? I Think there is way too much presssure on artists nowadays to be all over the world ans tour 3 countries in a day or something like that
Very easy to turn down hundreds of millions of pounds when you already have hundreds of millions of pounds…
@@LouiseHultcrantz that's why artist like Adele and Rihanna took a break it's really tiring and a high pressure job and people don't really realise
luckily that next album wasn't a good one
They have been fealing guilt for decades so just one is not enough.
Coldplay is already doing more than 99.9% of other artists and people out there. Good for them. They do what they feel is right for their music and career, and try and help the planet and communities out. What more could you ask of 'em?
The Planet will be fine, it has no feelings, no mind, no agenda, it exists for now, so do we, we have an agenda, to survive, most of the time we survive despite the planets environment(such as viruses, floods, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes and so on).
Planting a tree for each ticket buyer was a good thing to increase green on land.
Yes, When I looked at that crowd and imagined them all as trees swaying in the wind...that blew me away. Wow what an idea.
Councils are the problem, they are chopping up anything that’s green and building houses on it for people to live in that come from desert land , build them some houses in their own country and leave our green land alone, that would be a start
Right but how would that be criticized? This is what confuses me. This just seems like they’re doing good things but I don’t know who is yelling “DONT PLANT THAT TREE” “NO MAKE A BIGGER FOOT PRINT” and the people saying “you aren’t doing enough” will never be pleased. But everyday people just wanna see Coldplay. And this new eco friendly tour doesn’t hurt that so there’s really no point for any outrage
@@tunez4uhickman997 You are spot on. We need to become more proactive regarding councils. A lot of their deals go on behind closed doors. I am going to be brutally honest. Where I live many people refuse to challenge because of their ethnicity. In my opinion. Its a cop out. Time we just tore off the shackles.
@@lasttango7522 absolutely, there’s been a big scandal in Newark on Trent where I live over the cutting down of hundred year old trees to build houses, the council’s have acted like thugs with the protesters, after a live recorded phone conversation with the council they forgot to put the phone down at their end and were unknowingly recorded slagging off the protesters calling them losers and laughing about cutting down the trees with chainsaws in front of them, these councillors are greedy scum who care about nothing but money and then make up lies about being safe and green, they are monsters
My respect to Coldplay for risking it all to push something very important... the environment.
I just love the "I dont mind the backlash, because they are right." thing. It's just so refreshing hearing someone not try to argue something just for the sake of being right.
I don't understand why Coldplay would be getting backlash for an eco-friendly tour. This helps move things forward and it's great that Chris Martin is thinking about sustainability for his tour productions.
@smokin cheerios Dude anyone will find them using private jets as a way to smear them
@smokin cheerios lol
I’ve been seeing comments like how pretentious the band are by showing off how nice they are. People just love to hate.
Mainly the problem is that they can't back it up with numbers. So it doesn't really mean anything.
So the criticism starts even in these comments. I wonder what all the critics are doing to solve problems in their own workplaces.
Coldplay and other bands/artists who tour are only a small part of the problem , there's millions of other people creating the problems too, including me. At least Coldplay are trying and trying to be upfront about it and honest
Exactly!
This! Any effort, is effort. Also, they’ll influence a lot of people just by taking things into consideration and being serious about it.
Its the fact you are trying to use propaganda to sell records. It’s not a new practice but if you want to preach it and profit greatly from it you better be doing what you are selling. They sell music they need to stick to that. Especially when as he stated it’s unachievable. And he lied because it sounded good. And still he pursed the bullshit why not admit you lied. And move on. Instead you are going to plant a tree. Silver spoon muppet.
@@Chris441987 we all have our opinions/criticisms whether positive or negative. I suppose it can create a conversation about the issues. I'll stick with the positive side of things though and refrain from unhelpful name calling.
@@Chris441987 oh hush with your 'propaganda' bs. You sound ridiculous.
That's sound incredible, I never wanted to attend a concert more with like minded humans who care about our world and the purest form of art music.

Coldplay is actually an inspiration. People should just sit and listen and look at them before judging. I’m a proud fan of them since day 1
Coldplay welcomes backlash.. backlashers be ready to backlash for more bec this band will never stop making a diff, doesn’t matter if people agree or not. When you know you’re doing what you can for others and the planet, no matter how small that’s the first giant step.
It's a nice one from Coldplay
I still can't forget the song my universe with BTS 😍😂 Sheila
I am so happy that they are taking action to help things out, since literally every other concert is causing all of these problems as well, but the artists don't pay attention to it at all while they tour for their on personal benefit, I think the fact that Coldplay is trying to make it clean is something most artists aren't even considering to spend on.
Have you every considered that touring and live shows is the BIGGEST stream of income for artists?? By far actually. You can’t expect every artist and band in the world who don’t have a huge following stop touring. That’s just insane.
You are doing what you could do! Touring will make so many people happy and more environmentally aware!

Wait...so people are mad because Chris is trying to help the Earth?😐 I-
yeah people hate them so much, I don't listen much on Coldplay because they are to pop for me and I hate pop because I listened more on rock that was emo, grunge, punk, metal or hard but Coldplay doesn't deserve all the hate they received
@@arnoldstallonereeves7469 I listen to literally EVERYTHING! For me personally, as long as it sounds good to my ear then I'll listen. But as far as like metal and all that I'm more on the light side of things but I do really like Slipknots song "Spiders" and also really like Skillet song "Hero". Ugh their so good🤘😩 but like I said I stick to more of the lighter stuff like Panic at the disco or Fall Out Boy aka my Favs.😊 btw yes no Artist should get hate if they are putting the work in. Especially if they are writing or producing their own stuff! But honestly, the only Artists I'm truly will be a long time fan of is BTS because they...
1: Not only write their own stuff but 2: The Lyricism is Top Notch (even tho their recent stuff had been way more pop and is less written by them) [Not trying sound shady tho]
You cannot use a private jet to make the world a better place
I think coldplay always seemed environmentally friendly, ever since 2016, I think Chris has always done his best to understand the world and people and he tells that through his music
Cool what they’re doing. And needs to be done more. But until the powers that be at the the top make it a change for everyday living then its almost impossible to do it off of your own back. Good luck to them though
Hopefully 100% of actual musical tours can be done like this, to get there stuff like this needs to be done
don't be ridiculous
I mean, I guess they’re trying and they know they’ll get criticism. Good for them.
If you think about it, that’s a fook load of trees. Will Chris have enough time to plant them all? Busy man.
Already book tickets for me and my girlie in berlin. She has always been considering environtment in her purchases. Now knowing this, she'd feel even better

Love this band so much! Chris, Jonny, Will and Guy are brave and generous to make their tour greener. They really try their best to make a positive impact and to use their platform to encourage love for others and love for the environment. 🐙❤💜
I would say it is the first step to eco friendly concerts all over the world

@@charles_wren_films its a mystery. Been going for a long time making timeless music for alot longer than most legendary bands of the past. As a fan from day one. I’m still laughed at today for it. They are doing much more than other artists, to minimise their environmental damage, so they don’t deserve the criticism.

You can't only plant a tree. You also need to sustain its growth. There are so many tree planting campaigns which fail miserably because no one is monitoring / paying for what's happening after unfortunately.
How does the investor know they've actually planted the tree. Who audits it? Looks like an industry ripe for scammers. Might get into it myself.
@@RhyetCast Awesome, I'll look into it. Who counts the trees?
@@jrcp106 the trees are basically counted when planted. Over the years not every tree planted will survive, but that is ok as long as most do and start to form a kind of micro climate that allows for plants and trees to grow naturally and self seed. It takes years, but it's possible if someone takes care of the little planted trees for a while. And that is usually what these organizations do, they not only plant the trees, but care for them. As for counting after years, you would rather fly a drone and make pictures from above the area to see how it changed and estimate number of trees like that.
I'm waiting the next shows coldplay, here in Brazil......

Regarding traveling in airplanes, that's out of Coldplay's control. Just imagine all artists giving concerts traveling by sea, it would take 2 maybe 3 years to finish one concert tour traveling by sea WW. Airlines and Boing are responsible for making the huge changes in airplanes.
It's not the fact they're travelling by air. It the fact that they keep doing so in private jets. If you're not aware, private jets have gigantic c02 and pollution prodiction per cápita per km. It's by far the least environment friendly way to travel

I'm glad to see the majority of the comments agree that at least Coldplay even considered the environmental aspect to start.
