Yep, the last new major political party in America was in fact the Republicans, forming over slavery, the issue that basically crippled the Whigs and made them obsolete. I am glad Will is honest about Trump being a dominant political figure. I hate his politics but he rolled over the GOP primary candidates in 2016 and remade the image of the GOP to be Trump. Mostly here to listen to some lefties say "I told you so" though. I thought it would be like a coin flip not a trouncing.
If you look at the actual votes and not electoral votes, it was a coin flip. Red states went Trump, blue states went Harris, and the 7 swing states were basically 50/50. Getting 51% of the vote when your opponent gets 47% is not a trouncing. There was no radical shift in the electorate. If lots of people vote, democrats win, if not, the Republicans win, just like everyone has been saying for decades.

Yep, the last new major political party in America was in fact the Republicans, forming over slavery, the issue that basically crippled the Whigs and made them obsolete. It was very disruptive, and part of the process was ceding elections to the Democrats more or less, but at the end of the process something new had emerged that was willing to take action on the issue. At least the losses would have been *for* something.
The American electoral system is planned to have two parties, the Democrats and Republics have the same genealogical origin.
