  • Soap making video for the Soap Challenge Club January 2020 - Landscape Designs in the regular category - limit of 4 or less elements.
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
This is my first and only attempt for this challenge. I have been so busy this month and was lazy for a complicated design. The design I came up with is the beach sea wave design, although simple, it has two techniques I’ve never tried before. (Pointy layers and cosmic wave)
The colourants I used in this video were:
    White- titanium dioxide
Blue - indigo powder, blue clay and activated charcoal
    Grey - Activated charcoal
Essential oil blend: Eucalyptus and peppermint
    Time links to the video:
0:22 Mixing of lye solution and oils
0:46 Colouring of the sand portion
1:12 Pouring of the sand portion
1:37 Colouring of the white and blue portion of the sea
2:09 Texturing of the sand portion
2:28 In the pot swirl of the sea portion
2:40 Pouring of the sea portion
3:08 Colouring of the grey sky portion
3:22 Pouring of the sky (creating the waves)
    4:09 Cutting of the soap
    4:37 Finished photos
The waves came through in the design! I am quite happy about the final design. What do you think? Let me know in the comments.
But then somehow the top layer of the soap turned out to be a such different texture to the rest of the soap - it was quite hard and slightly crumbly. I am not sure what has happened, let me know if you do!

Yes! I thought I failed right after I made the soap! So happy that the waves were formed!

Neat!! I like the different techniques you used to get this look! The pointy layers worked well, and so did pouring some extra on one side to push the waves out. The sky really lightened up a lot! I'm not sure what would cause that since you mixed it all up at once and it was the last layer poured, so it should be fully emulsified! The mysteries of soapmaking chemistry continue. Thank you for sharing your process - it's a beautiful soap!
