      Thank you so much DIYr. DeWalt's so big I wonder if they even look on RUclips. I'm sure they are focused elsewhere. But this is why I do this. Far from a pro with a BA in film I try my best and just put it out there. I want to know just what other consumers want to know before buying anything, all the features and details. I will have a vid coming out in a few weeks, My 1 year anniversary and will review all my tools I’ve reviewed. I’ll be giving an update if any issues have come up or if they have performed flawlessly. Thanks for the kind words and I appreciate you taking the time to view.

    cut piece of woods and flip one side upside down should be perfect joint

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  8 лет назад

      +max121237 Absolutely correct, I’ve even straighten my framing square with a punch after scoring a line then flip the short leg to opposite side and score another and depending on which way the top flares in or out ill punch the square in or out to adjust. I just want the consumer to know the tool isn’t always set correct and to check all angles prior to starting a project to ensure a better outcome. Thanks for the in put.

      I appreciate the kind words thank you very much. I know it was long but 10min I couldn't cover everything about this tool. Factory sets the tool best they can but I'm weird about precision and like my cuts straight and true. I want to let people know all its features and how to check its cuts and adjust so that cuts are precise at every angle. If I helped you familiarize yourself with the tool and adjusted properly then I accomplished what I set out to do. Thank you so much for viewing and I appreciate the input, enjoy your tool.

  • @ClimateofSophistry

    I just got this saw and was doing the calibrations for tweaking up the miter and bevel angles.
    For the bevel, I measured the angles by using the blade with a digital angle ruler like yours. One span of the ruler on the base and the other span lined up against the blade. The 0, 22.5, & 45 degree left bevels were a bit off so I made the adjustments. I made sure that the ruler was totally flush against the blade and not on the side of a saw tooth.
    Then when I did some practice cuts on real wood (2×4’s and MDF pieces), the angles were slightly off but extremely consistent. The 0 degree cut was off by 0.3 degrees, and the 22.5 and 45 by about the same. Noting the direction by which the bevel cut was either too shallow or deep, I tweaked the adjustments so that he actual cuts on wood gave 0, 22.5, and 45 degrees.
    I made sure the ruler was zeroed out and calibrated throughout and made these measurements all a few times to make sure and check if they were consistent, and they were. I also used a 7” square to confirm the 0 degree cut on the wood - the cut was flush with the later empirical adjustment for the actual wood cut, whereas it was slightly off with the angle ruler 0 degree set on the blade.
    Now when I measure the blade with the digital angle ruler, it is off by the amounts that the cuts were off before, which is what you would expect if things are consistent.
    Question is: Why is there a difference between what is measured with the ruler calibration on the blade, vs. how it actually cuts? Does the high RPM on the blade change the blade aspect or something? Does the force between the blade and the wood change the blade aspect?

    Great video! Three plus decades wood working I'm sure that I've gone thru a couple dozen similar saws. All older versions this is only my second double compound, so far none of which have been quite as nice as this one. I got rid of that single saw horse stand, bought two ***PROTOCOL SH-42 folding saw horses*** I LIKE THESE MUCH BETTER!!! I simply prefer building my own custom cut stations and I like them to be much more stable! I also double check all adjustments pretty much anytime the saw is moved or at each cut station move.
    Those claps are available at Home D or most building supply stores. I believe I saw them on amazon for about 30 bucks per pair. I might have used mine once or twice and it was during first few set ups. I probably won't use it again. I still prefer to make my own cutting table jigs, stops clams etc etc I build them into my custom cut stations.
    I'm with you, SO FAR I LOVE THIS TOOL! I've had mine for a little over a year and it's been one bad ass saw. IME so far it's been worth every last penny.
    Great review and unboxing of this tool. There are a lot of little features and adjustments not found on most of the older saws. I'm pretty dam sure that you covered each and ever single one of them.
    Im with other commentators here Dewalt should be paying you for this review!!! I'd certainly hope that they send you one of those clamps LOL!
    If not I'll give you mine.

    Great video!! Only issue I found out about this saw is the adjustment to alignment up the sides the screw is under the guards, if you make and miter saw station and have extended fence can’t line up with the guards because the guards have to come off to aligning from time to time.

    Excellent work my friend. I just got a DWS779 and this video will help me tremendously. The manual was worthless and cryptic, but you covered the basics and the advanced fully and clearly. And apparently the 779 can be modified and the XPS led light added for around 60 bucks, so I might do that at some point. I didn't see a point of getting the 780 just for the light for $250 more. The only other thing I noticed that is different on the 779 is that it doesn't have an on/off switch. Same exact saw for the most part otherwise.

    I wound up with the 779 from Home Depot. It was on special for 349 when I got home and I almost paid 400 for it in the Keys, glad I waited. One of the guys we worked with down there had the 780 and I loved it and I also loved the shadow line. Lasers are absolutely worthless and a gimmick. I found online that you can spend 50 bucks and get the LED, 780 handle and the power supply for the 780 and make your own in 5 minutes. I ordered my stuff already and have used the saw for a month. I'm going to wait until summer before I violate my warranty and convert my 779 to a 780. Just want to make sure I work any bugs out. Also, if you want to do crown stops, for some reason the Dewalts are always out of stock. The Bosch set can be purchased for 16 dollars shipped and all you need is 15 minutes, a tap set and you're done. The 780, 779 and 782(lowe's number for the 779) are amazing saws. If you don't care about the shadow line, get the 779 or 782 because these saws are 100% the same saw, except for the shadow line LED. Awesome saw for the cash, seriously. This is the review that got me thinking, then one of our carpenters brought one and I loved it. We had the new Makita 36v cordless and while it's an amazing saw, it's only a 10 inch and I really need the 12.

      Satchmo i may have gotten a LOT of slack for my review of DeWalts dill and impact but this is one tool they got right. I agree i came from a Delta 10" chop saw that really couldn't go all the way through a 4x4 plus it just wasn't true any more really worn out so this was a major need. 12" was the only option for me. I am nothing less than impressed and very happy with it. As you stated lasers are crap love this shadow sight. Hope it all works out for the upgrade. Thanks for viewing.

      I've taken some slack but once i received the 2nd clamp I purchased I use them all the time. It's nice to NOT have to remove the one clamp and reposition it to the other side with 2 you just camp when needed without the hassle. YES for the cost 2 should come with the saw. The convenience out weights the cost.

      Congrats!! You will completely enjoy it. I find myself using this more and more. I will say the blade that comes with this saw is good. But, after laying over 500 square feet of wood flooring my blade is dull. I just didn't have time prior to the installation to get a different blade . So if you plan on any wood floor install do yourself a favor and buy another blade. Other than that, this saw has performed flawlessly. Enjoy thank you for the compliment and I appreciate you viewing

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  7 лет назад

      I looked at the Bosch but after much thought personally simplicity is better. Just like a car too many gadgets more to go wrong. To me same holds true for my tools. The slide is just that simplicity. Think about it, the Festoll $1500.00 miter saw also has the slide system. The Bosch has 6 different pivot points that’s a lot of places to wear out vs. 2 tubes. If your space limited, with occasional use Bosch is probably a good fit. Only with regular use time will tell. Thank you for viewing. If you’re shopping for on just make sure your happy with it. That’s what counts.

    In my opinion, this is the best and most reliable slide miter saw to date. I have used festool kapex, hitachi, makita corded and cordless. I had one of these saws back in 2006 and it took an absolute beating for 5 years. even towards the end it was still cutting trim work perfectly. One day it just started smoking but like i said it took nearly 6 years of abuse. I have recently 2017 gone back to this saw just because it was so good to me before. the only thing i will say is that it is quite heavy, and if you are doing trim work like i do now day in day out on 2-3 story fit outs it can become tiresome. But the so many benefits outweigh that only negative, if you want to call it that.
    I LOVE THIS SAW!! Oh and i prefer to have the guard removed, but i do that with all of the mitre saws i have owned.

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  6 лет назад +1

      Dave i totally agree with you but i have to say the weight is great for me. I have an old Delta 10" chop saw that i used for many years and that thing is solid iron and HEAVY. I think i got a hernia from it ;) Seriously it was heavy and only a 10" chop saw. To me this is a feather compared but I will admit i don't use it like i would years ago. Only a lil trim finish work here and there and for framing small jobs but never up and down stairs. I think I'd get that stand with wheels if i did what you do. I use to use a wheel barrel to lug my saws and guns from my truck to the job because i got tired of carrying them.
      On the guards if you don't have them and someone gets stupid they blame you. I'm old school and never had safety guards on my tools this is the first. I grew up with a respectful fear of power tools. It only take a fraction of a second and you can loose a finger, hand or worse. In wood class it all started and a few years in a machine shop on mills and lathes then the cabinet shop I took to heart what the experienced guy told me and never got cocky paid attention and treated my tool with respect.

    • @DaveEdmondson
      @DaveEdmondson 6 лет назад

      I have to admit, i am being a little picky on the weight. i did just have the festool kapex and that thing is light as a feather. Exactly the same here i come a family of carpenters and they never had guards, because i work on my own and im the only one using my tools it is my preferred method, i like the comment about the respectful fear of power tools. I think anybody with real passion and respect for there trade should think like this, i sure do. my great uncle didn't loose his fingers until he was in his late 70s.

    After all that time & effort getting my miter set up on the rolling stand (sold separately) it took me a good 30-45 minutes just to figure out how to LIFT the saw by releasing the lock-down pin. (see around 6:30 in this video) For someone who's never used a miter saw and is not mechanically-inclined as the saying goes, a "lock-down pin" could mean many things. I do wish the manual authors would include such seemingly trivial diagrams for us greenhorns, but thankfully we have entered the _RUclips Tutorial Age_ ...... just before the _Age of Social Distancing_ ......

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  7 лет назад

      davva just make sure its the one you want. never buy just based on what someone else tells you. do your research and weight the options and your budget then think just what you will use it for.The material you'll be cutting. I cut 4x4, 2x4, 2x10 and up to 4x10 so i needed a 12"miter saw to cut more width and thick material. Do you need only miter cuts for base molding, door frames, picture frames and such then a 10" miter will do but i use the bevel cut for fascia board repairs and crown molding so i need a more capable dual compound miter saw with more function. Set your budget know your need and function get the appropriate model and you'll be happy. It doesn't matter brand or model its what fits you.

    Thanks for your reply, I just wanted to pass on info about a zero clearance throat plate I ordered and just installed in my saw. It is made by Infinity Cutting Tools from Oldsmar Fl. This is a top shelf product, very well made, much better than the yellow plastic ones that came with the saw. Found it on you tube.The item number is 100-333 ($59.90) and wooden replacement inserts item number 100-333ip 2 piece ($9.90) It changes the saw from a Cadillac to a BMW. Highly recommended..Mike

      I never intended to do this but my mother is very materialistic and when I bought the place I’m at, the shop in the back she referred to it as a shack because it didn't meet her standards, so it just stuck. Tack shack could also mean a shop for saddles bridles and such. Great name though. Looks like you may like model railroading. Great Video one of the best on this saw on You Tube. One question, if my saw blade on the left side is at 90 degrees and on the right it is at 89.7 degrees. How do I get it to 90 degrees on both? I think my blade is twisted? thanks!

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  4 года назад +1

      Glenn if you take the angle on one side of the blade and without rotating the blade and take the angle on the other side not hitting the carbide tip of the blade. It should read equal there’s no way the blade could be twisted on one side and not the other I would take a straight edge check the base see if one side is not equal to the other

    Thank you very much, very useful video tutorial. Is the depth stop functional enough and accurate enough to produce consistent equal depth cuts to allow a mortise or trench to be excavated ? Eg is a 2 inch deep cross cut mortise possible in a 4 inch beam ? Considering buying one but need a good depth stop, without any flex in the saw arm to ensure even depth flat cross cuts. Thanks.

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  4 года назад

      DRJMF1
      I have used this for that very thing. For lap joint when framing. Notching 4 x 6 for for 2 x 6 floor joist for a deck. But like a table saw you won't get the smooth cut as you would with a dado set up. Like a tablesaw you make multiple cuts then with a hammer break them all out then with a chisel smooth out the joint. For construction this fantastic. if you're wanting a close fit mortise & Tenon joint you may need to really take your time and fine tune it with a chisel. The setting itself is quite consistent.

    Excellent video. I appreciate the walk through on how to do the setup. One quick question now that you've had the saw for a month or so. On quite a few of the reviews of this mitre saw (some as far back as 3 years, others more recent) a big complaint about the saw is how bad the sliding mechanism is. Complaints of tightness, wobbling, grinding....just generally not smooth at all. Have you found this to be true?

    • @TheShackHome
      @TheShackHome  8 лет назад +2

      +B Wilie I’ve had no issue as of yet. I was aware of the reviews stating this issue prior to buying mine. There are close tolerances as far as the slid design so I knew getting this it wouldn’t slide easy. I personally don’t want it to be that easy or loose. Note the rotation of the blade so some resistance in this case is a good thing but it does slid very smoothly. I’m really anal about my tools so after every use I blow it off and wipe it down every time. Plus the older reviews are also older models DeWalt continues to improve on their design so they may have tweaked the slide. Only time will tell. I took 7 months researching before I bought this model and id do it again with the same results.
