- Paradise
Where the river runs black
I take the schoolbooks from your pack
Plastics, wire and your kiss
The breath of eternity on your lips
In the crowded marketplace
I drift from face to face
I hold my breath and close my eyes
I hold my breath and close my eyes
And I wait for paradise
And I wait for paradise
The virginia hills have gone to brown
Another day another sun going down
I visit you in another dream
I visit you in another dream
I reach and feel your hair
Your smell lingers in the air
I brush your cheek with my fingertips
I taste the void upon your lips
And I wait for paradise
And I wait for paradise
I search for you on the other side
Where the river runs clean and wide
Up to my heart the waters rise
Up to my heart the waters rise
I sink `neath the water cool and clear
Drifting down, I disappear
I see you on the other side
I search for the peace in your eyes
But theyre as empty as paradise
Theyre as empty as paradise
I break above the waves
I feel the sun upon my face
I had my eyes closed for the entire video, and let the words create a visual for me, this is so beautiful yet all too heartbreaking. There ain't going to be another Bruce, ever.
The greatest American Musician in the last 4 decades. No difficult for me to believe it.
Yep
Caro Bruce,
ho 76 anni ma questo "paradise" cantato da te, mi fa emozionare in modo eccezionale ciao
❤such a beautiful song😢
And I break above the waves
I feel the sun upon my face
Best song ever
So true, best song ever
and this version is even better the recorded version
This song is so chilling. Absolutely beautiful, and emotionally devastating at the same time. Bruce's ability to genuinely touch your soul is so striking.
Thank you, Mr. Springsteen.
una delle voci più belle della musica ,accompagnata da una melodia da paradiso, bruce sei veramente bravo,ITALY MILANO Angy 78
Posiblemente, una de las mejores canciones que se haya escrito jamás.
No one writes like Bruce.
Simply brilliant....there is no other like Bruce! This song gives me goose bumps everytime I hear it! Haunting and beautiful, the man is a poet and no other does what he does!
Powerful song powerful man. How strong to do this for us, for himself
Thats Bruce at his best! He ist a fantastic song writer!!!!
I am enthroled with this song first time i have heard it😢😢
hauntingly beautiful,full of emotion,breathtaking
"..i'll visit you in another dream..."
This also is a fantastic performance! Breathtaking! Thanks for posting.
I wish there hadn't have been any reason for Bruce to have written this song :( but it is beautiful and very moving! Thanks for posting.
I thought it was about the surviving family members of the people that died. How it must have been for them to have to deal with the grief of losing their loved ones in such a tragic and senseless way :( Maybe they were thinking of killing themselves to stop hurting so much from their loss and at the last minute decided to live. :( Either way it is a VERY moving song! Thanks Bruce for writing it and thanks MatMc001 for posting it!!
Meravigliosamente bella e un incanto
This is real, yet it is magic

Such a great song and Bruce rules
This is beautiful
Hauntingly beautiful, Thanks for uploading this gem :)
Top 10 in the Springsteen catolog
My Favorit Live Song of B.S!!!!
beautifully haunting !
Thank you...thanks
Beautiful and so powerful.
beautiful
The first thought that comes to mind is haunting. The other comments confirmed the same feeling. Bruce is an exceptional talent and has/ had a fantastic band. I have never seen a live concert that delivers what he does. OK Better Midler does too . She puts on a Fantastic show. Beautiful ! Springsteens album Nebraska got planned in Rolling Stone. I think it was superb. My only slight dissapointment in albums was Born in the U.S.A. It sounded like a forced and cranked commercial job under the whip of contract. It shows. Not saying that it was bad album, it just seemed that he was creating through a contrational noose. I found it interesting that it was one of his most commercially successful albums. Go figure.
Bruce, I love You!
It is time for a Nugs release..
masterpiece
thank you :-)
song. birthing beauty in the dawn of sorrow.
great great great! what else to say?
Merci
The winter sun shot thru the black trees
I told myself it was all something in her
But as we drove I knew it was something in me
Something that had been comin' for a long time
And something that was here with me now
On highway 29
The road was filled with broken glass and gasoline
She wasn't sayin' nothin', it was just a dream
The wind was coming silent thru the windshield
All I could see was snow, sky and pines
I closed my eyes and I was runnin'
I was runnin' then I was flyin'
I,ve gone to heaven....
Really? I would never have guessed that. Where did you discover that interpretation?
Songs are so personal to the songwriter AND the listener. We hear what resonates for us, based on our experiences and perspective. It never ceases to fascinate me!
RIP BIG MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i actually like this better then the original one.

A female suicide bomber... walking through the crowded market, eyes drifting from face to face... closing her eyes, she puts her finger to the trigger and waits for Paradise...
The Virginia hill have gone to brown... United Airlines flight 93 and all aboard.. bot now all that's left is their memory, as in a dream... But we do not drown in our sorrow; we continue on.
Probably the most poignant song ever written. God, it makes me cry every single time. :'(
Nothing Man, You're Missing, Into the fire, Jesus Was an Only Son, Should I Fall Behind (live)
RIP BIG MAN
I don't know the official reason...
The Rising album is centered around Springsteen's reflections on the September 11, 2001 attacks.
While most of the songs were written after September 11, 2001, a few of them pre-date the attacks.
@ireneadler17 That's just about the best description of the song I've read. :)
Great video... amazing lyrics... what can I say anymore? Wonderful upload...
Is this from Devils & Dust tour?
the last thing i would want to hear when the death comes to take me....
i'd be careful listening to this now that you posted that bit about your death.....:)
Maja Kordic then don't commit suiside
@GuiltAndFailure try "empty sky", it's amazing too!
💜🖤🌹🎸🙏🔝🤟
I visit you in another dream
I know we all have different perpestives, but when I hear this line it reminds me of a young girls first kiss, and the line plastic and wire make me think he is singing about her braces, maybe I'm too naive, I can see where folks think the worst case scenario but you know opinions are... opinions, my compainion native NYer's
( not me) thinks that's all it is.
which live is this? Where was it? I can't stop listening 👂
I was there.. and it was hell on earth ! .I am most likely in denial about this song, because I don't understand how he can romanticize an act that has caused me and so many others so much pain, I left the city only to....
Someone explain that...and please I adore Bruce but this gives me chills
I really don’t think he romanticizes the act. He does make us think. Feel.
This was 2001, and I betting you weren't there, because I lived in a cop and Fireman borough called Queens.
I listened to the Bagpipes playing everyday for about a year,
..but just so you know, I love the piano. 🎹
Such a beautiful song,i bet there wasnt a dry eye in the house.
Now there's a scary thought, I mean on my end, no wait that's not what I meant - the other way around, so you see, everyone has a different view, it's what makes us interesting, human, and sometimes,.... anyway you know what I mean... it's good to have company, thanks
You are very perceptive, Yes, it could have happened just as you write, the loss and sudden death of a loved one can push people over the top, I know 9/11 was hell on earth.
Words can save lives, and you have a way with them..
Peace...
@marktech101 listen to Nothing Man or Missing live
@SuzzyStohelit
Hi Suzzy, I agree with you although I never experienced any circumstance like that... and I think this song is meant to give you chills, I love the melody but it makes me uneasy. I think it's meant to thrill people and make them doubt absolutely every belief they might have in this religious paradise some people are ready to kill or die for.
I had to read many comments in order to start to understand what it's about and all I'm sure about is that it's intended to make us think.
Yes exactly. Think. Feel!
You're welcome :-)
It's from the Rising, and is probably about a guy who's childhood love perished in 9/11.
I could be totally wrong about how I interpreted this song. When you listen to it...it just seems like someone is planning on ending their lives and then decides against it. Although with the other people's comments...it makes you see a different view and think that yes it could have been about a suicide bomber. I just know that to me it is a very thought provoking/moving song.
@MsNinjaA I know that but thanks
how come he pronounces paradise like pair-uh-dice in this song, but in incident on 57th street says pAradise. did he lose some of his accent?
We could try to explain mate but what would be the point?
Buuffff.... oofffsss.... this is just too much for me tonite... 'telling you, dear... too much for me...
she's gone - in the song - written after 9/11
I don't know the official reason. Do you?
@JMC01644 Its about a suicidebomber. They believe they go to "Paradise ", if they "succed"
there's very few songs better than this
@MatMc001 9/11
Nope, it is definitely about 9/11 from the bomber's perspective but hey it's for people to make their own interpretation right?
That's sick :S So it's about cold blooded mass murderer? WTF Bruce...
Took power to write. Go Bruce!
