Bruce is the only artist whose lyrics perfectly manage to capture masculinity's paradoxes - the bravado, the vulnerability, the strength, the doubt, the pressure to live up to it all... This song is a perfect example of this.
I never knew how much I would like the Tunnel of Love album until I played it, and for that matter the Boss. It's a masterpiece and I love the whole album. Walk like a Man is so touching and gets you right to the core. I lost my Dad to cancer awhile back and I'm trying my best to be half the man he was. I can't help from crying when I hear this song and the memories of him and what life is. Be strong and walk like a man!!
My favourite Bruce song - can only attribute his reluctance to play it live to the sadness of his father's memory. I've been there too - like BobbyF, I think of my late father every time I hear this - it's a form of self-torture but it brings him back.
I always think of my Daddy, who died much too young, every time I listen to this wonderful song. Like Bruce, I did trail after my Dad on the beach, trying to fit my child's feet into his foot prints, trying to walk like a man. The Boss was a Jersey shore kid. My beach was Far Rockaway Beach, in Queens, NY. Both places were hit hard by Super Storm Sandy & I'm sure both our Dad's would be helping out in the rebuilding, if they were still alive.
I bought this cd today for $1 brand new. I was so surprised when I got home. Every song is wonderful. It is like a story he is telling in every song. This song about his father and learning and life. I doubt we will see another like Bruce.
The song that came on the radio in the car as I was driving to make the wake/funeral arrangements for my dad who had just passed. I can't get through the opening bars without misting up. Now it's come full circle and my son is to be married in April of '11. It means as much to me on this "end" as it did then
thank you for sharing. never heard this song until today, and i completely agree - hell i cried at those lines thinking of my dad, and he's still alive and doing great..
The man has so many gems. Unbelievable songwriter. THE ULTIMATE PERFORMER. I can't get off this site...i keep going deeper and deeper into his incredible catalog.
totally understandable. If I'm ever listening and something pulled me away from the song if it's in my car on TV Ellen RUclips I feel so guilty for cutting it off the cause all of his songs amazing and heartwarming. the best rock and roll the best soul the best love songs and any genre of music Bruce takes it to the highest level in everyone.
I love this! This is one I hadn’t heard until I found this video. Just another example of how Bruce can normally cut right to the heart of the truth with often very few words. And in spite of the fact that he himself has said he’s not a master of the piano I absolutely love it when he’s behind the keys.❤
this song makes me realize how lucky i am. had a wonderful family that raised me and have a great wife and kid. Youngest of a bunch of brothers to the best mom and dad a kid could have.
Bruce, 2021 please please sing this song! Been a long time In outings its time to to Walk a man again, one of the Bosses best albums ‘ Tunnel of love’ 👌
Fun to see Bruce play piano and his voice sounds awesome. This song is another one of his treasures that never got a lot of attention on the radio. He has so many incredible songs like that dont get played live very often. One of the best songwriters bar none. Bob Dylan is up in this rareified air as well.
Dylan is far more accomplished in terms of his lyrical ability. But I prefer Springsteen because of the emotion that goes into his songs. There's only a few Dylan songs that carry the same kind of emotional depth.
sir, I remember those days when I was jus 16 years working out in gym .I was working out in 💪gym . my younger brother changed the track and then I heard this. I was on last sets of weight training. I just feeded my soul . thanks a lot for making such a music making me a man 😇
Kralju prelepa pesma, hvala ti za tako dobru pesmu sa tako dobrom muzikom. Brus tvoj glas je neopisivo dobar. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋💋.
It's hard to believe that tour ended nearly 20 years ago. I saw two different shows on that tour. Bruce has a magical way of reinventing a song while still keeping the power and essential elements of the story alive and intact.
If you really think about it, you can actually play this at the funeral of your father or grandfather. Kind of an interesting last tribute to the man who (hopefully) helped guide you in life.
time can help heal those wounds.... but the first step has to come from you.....no matter what happened there, there's always the chance for forgiveness (either yourself or to or from others) and hope in every new day. If you look closely at Bruce's music he always finds a way to weave in hope in the most desperate of circumstances :)
well said outlaw. people think that Dave done too much wrong or too much time has passed when in all reality forgiveness is just a sentence away. appreciate your advice to whoever you were talking to because people need to know it's never too late to ask for or to give forgiveness
@rwr13158 I can relate on some levels. Congrats on 13 years. This is a very meaningfull song to me too. Here's to you and our old men. May we all walk like men. Best, Craig

Like Bruce songs lyrics your comment is brilliant, just brilliant.
So perfectly summed up.
Very well said
RIGHT ON......men have so much to worry about in this world.

Tunnel of Love has a bunch of meaning for me as well. It’s an under appreciated gem.
One of his most underrated and under played songs
I was there with my parents & sister. I was only 25 years old. Springsteen is a genius...

lost my dad the week of my college graduation 30 years ago. This song always hits home. Dad, I’ve tried to walk like a man.

bless you my good man. Born and raised in Bruce country. Jersey shore :)

Fantastic album. So many great meaningful songs.
This song means so much to me in so so many ways

It never ends. He is number one
Dozens of Masterpieces...
I was just singing this in the shower and now I'm here. Thanks, Bruce.
He has so much talent, I never grow tired of watching and listening to Bruce...love you man!

He's being too humble. He gets the piano to express incredible feelings with every note.
this song makes me realize how lucky i am. had a wonderful family that raised me and have a great wife and kid. Youngest of a bunch of brothers to the best mom and dad a kid could have.
Like many Springsteen gems, great imagery the listener essentially becomes part of the song.
Bruce, 2021 please please sing this song! Been a long time In outings its time to to Walk a man again, one of the Bosses best albums ‘ Tunnel of love’ 👌
Greatest songwriter ever
ABSOULUTELY!
I agree

The "Tunnel of Love" album is LOADED with hidden gems such as this one.
Put Neil young, bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and Australia’s Paul Kelly and that the best four songwriter 👌
I think this version is actually better than the album version. That electric piano sounds so undefiled and pure.
yes, and when he goes to the piano it gives me chills.
waaa this guy just has it so deep so sweet ! his way of talking is so greatly inspiring . . as his music folds out . .
Wow! Better than the studio recording.

Great Song from a great album
It's hard to believe that tour ended nearly 20 years ago. I saw two different shows on that tour. Bruce has a magical way of reinventing a song while still keeping the power and essential elements of the story alive and intact.
only a genius like bruce could pull that off
i asked my Dad what it meant to walk like a man and he told me it meant to simply be strong in tribulations bittersweet

This and Independence Day are two perfect but sad songs about sons and fathers.
