I love this waiata and although I give props to these students for their enthusiasm, the very least the tutors could have done was teach the songs the way they were meant to be sung ..
It is common for E Te Hokowhitu to be sung this way .. And most people think this is how it is supposed to be performed. Everyone sings 'E te hokowhitu atu kia kaha ra' on the same note when it actually changes 12 times .. It's subtle but makes an enormous difference .. This is a Ngāti Porou anthem and anyone from home will agree that this is not how it was written. 😀l
I don’t know how this should be sung and am not musically minded but I remember my mother teaching it to me when I was a child, not even 10 years old. I’m 60 now and can remember clear as day she sang it to the tune of the Glen Miller Band hit tune “in the mood”. So it was an up n down lilting kinda tune. Is that what you’re talking about Moana? Mum was born and bred in Dannevirke - not too far from Ngāti Porou rohe. Still love the song and the memories.
The harmonies don't matter anywhere near as much as the lyrics and actions do. Sincerely, he tuturu Ngaati Porou mokopuna tuarua, oo Henare raaua ko Amiiria Waitoa
If you really want to correct people, go comment on every pookarekare ana video and let everyone know it's meant to be "ngaa wai oo Waiapu", not Rotorua 🤗
