In 1984 during my naval career, we took this beautiful waiata through Asia, America and Mexico for 6 months. It brings tears to my eyes and a warmth to my heart to hear it again, Ataahua Whanau, Thank You.
From memory that was when the NZ Consulate opened in Mexico City and the NZ Apple& Pear Board requested that our Kapa Haka group travel from Acapulco to perform to help promote NZ and support our Ambassador. I was blown away when we performed on that TV program televised live to millions, at the requests coming in from viewers asking us to sing a waiata that they knew. Fond memories
Tumeke whanau this song always make me homesick for Te Mahia, Nukutaurua, Tawapata, Onenui Station, Portland Island - Waikawa. Rongomaiwahine / Te Mahia are simply the best. Ataahua.
I love this song. I was in the kapa haka group at CCNZ back in the 80's. Sis Lil Kershaw and Bro Hani Smiler were the tutors. I'm not Maori. I still know more Maori songs than my own cultural songs..
Ngati Kahungunu go to song! Love this about our culture and how people from same Tribe or not connect through waiata / haka and at times never met before. RAWE!
