  • The 2024 Honolulu Surf Film Festival has drawn to a close. Theatre manager and programmer Sarah Fang delighted us with over fifteen surfing films and even more when you add film shorts. The Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theatre has proved to be the ideal setting for this festival for the last fifteen years.
Exceptional praise goes out to the festival's major sponsors Aqua-Aston Hospitality and the Surf News Network.
The festival opened with a sold out buffet dinner and the premiere of the Dick Brewer biopic film "The Shape of Things".
The festival closed with another Bud Browne vintage classic film "Locked In" provided by Anna Trent Moore at the Bud Browne Film Archives. Anna Trent Moore opened the evening with a speech more akin to epideictic oratory.
A special feature of many of the films came with a post film discussion including the director and producers of the film, the principle surfers, and with audience participation. Luminaries in the surfing world like Randy Rarick, Jeannie Chesser, Emi Erickson, Jock Sutherland, Darrick Doerner, Todd Pinder, Buzzy Kerbox, Joey Cabell, Jericho Poppler, Lyle Carlson, Pat Rawson, Allen Sarlo, Bruno Lemos, and Clark Abbey joined the stage for the Q&A sessions.
We are looking forward to next year’s 16th Annual Honolulu Surf Film Festival.
Thanks to Bill Brooks for the use of his music on this video.
