- We live in a very noisy world. Traffic, industry, building construction, city streets - all add up to an overwhelming din that's far louder than people experienced in earlier times.
But what if there were other noises that not everyone can hear?
Al Jazeera meets Glen MacPherson, a Canadian science teacher who is trying to find global evidence that there's something out there called the "worldwide hum”.

I heard it earlier in the morning and I thought it was just thunder since in florida we get storms all the time, but it was too sudden and long for any kind of storm I've experienced.

Been hearing it for three years. Inside only including in my house, car, and I’ve heard it in other peoples houses as far as 150 miles away. It is worst in March and October. It lessens in summer. It comes and goes, fading in and out. Loudest at night usually but I hear it all day.
Yes, it is all day, loudest at night before the sun comes up. There can be a solar power, here we have got new. But I can not hear in the second street from me, only there. But my neighbours can not hear, or two can, but only in 1 room, or does not bother for them.
And after three years disappeared? What causes it? We have new solar power since i can hear it, and oil pump too, in plan was wind turbinas too, but i do not hear, if they make it or no.

It is driving me insane!!! It is 4AM and I cannot sleep because of it! I’m the only one in my family who can hear it. I am exhausted... and thankful for noise canceling headphones!

I’m an audio engineer and me and my girlfriend both hear it here in Kansas City. Hearing it right now. It cycles in and out in a Doppler effect manner similar to a tornado siren, yet, if I had to guess, it’s around 40Hz. It’s well within the audible spectrum but still low enough to be felt. It’s a square/saw wave type of sound similar to sub bass, yet so loud it could never be replicated by a car, especially not with the Doppler effect it has. I thought it was a helicopter or a semi truck for the first few minutes but it’s kept on going for about 2 hours now. I considered construction, yet that would be one massive saw to shake everything this much from this far away. Everything else is silent outside... Very puzzling.
Yes , my same thought when I started hearing it more often and louder here in the last few months I swore because we lived by a main road , was it a semi truck parked outside I even looked and then I realized the more I moved in certain ways it seemed to almsot get louder to me or more vibrating in my body and then it really freaked me out .
Honestly at some points I've listened to music at bed time or tried to drown it out with other noise like a tv or what not and that doesnnt always work either unless I put headphones in . But its definatly more prevalent at night.

It’s almost like the noise of an AC unit but very faint. I herd it when I went camping. The strange part of it is when I went camping it was cold when my friend and I got into the tent, then we both woke up and herd this humming , and the weather was freakishly warm, we thought maybe a forest fire was started near by because the air was so warm like someone turned on a heater. My friend and I got back into the tent and didn’t need a sleeping bag, even took off a few layers of clothes. It was very cold when we first got into the tent, and we walked around the warm night air for about 10 min trying to figure out what the heck was going on. We finally got back to sleep and when we woke it was very cold again. Strange very strange .

There is louder, when cloudly. The temperature also have influence to the low frekvenci waves how are spread. If there is wheather varyabling, then this hum is louder. But alwaise is in waves louder, then become lower. Is there you are living solar power, oil pump, gas pump? The oil or gas searching they uses infra waves, it can deeply entering in the soil.

Over 20 years ago this used to drive me nearly insane every night. We live in a very quiet rural area mostly woods and farm fields. At night when things quieted down I would hear an indistinct, constant, slow thrumming sound that seemed to come from off in the distance, like the way a bulldozer sounds when it's idling. That was the only way I could describe it to my husband, who did not hear it. I thought maybe it was something to do with the high tension wires we lived near that ran through the fields. But it wasn't. I thought maybe I was even hearing my own heartbeat or something because I had high blood pressure; it wasn't. I thought it had to do with our home, but I still heard it outside away from our home. I thought maybe there was late-night roadwork being done, but it went on for far too long for that. We moved to a new home a couple miles away and I still heard it. It finally stopped, but I don't remember exactly when. I was just so relieved, because I felt like I was going crazy. It wasn't until many years later I started seeing this on the internet, and other people talked about the same experience.

I’m hearing it right now. If I cover my ears, then I don’t hear it anymore. That, and my girlfriend sitting right next to me hears it too and is the one who kept asking me what it was. I dismissed it saying “probably a helicopter or something” but it’s been 2 hours now lol... I’m an audio engineer and have studied sound extensively for almost 10 years. I don’t know what the sound source is, but there is a sound source.
I thought it might be construction that was vibrating the ground and resonating with the structure of our house (like a bass drum) but we hear it just as loud outside... My parents woke up saying they hear it too now. Super interesting.

I'm in Australia I've been hearing this hum since early 2018. It's happening constantly and is driving me insane. It never stops.
It is energetic system, solar power, wind turbinas etc. and oil pumps, the oil and gas pumps before drilling they investigate the oil with infra sounds. It can vibrates the soil and the vibration in soil can streaming far away 200 miles, the elephants conversates with vibrations with legs vibrating the soil. It vibrates everything, our houses too and we are living inside a music instrument, what resonating and giving sounds, more hightly frequenties then infra sounds, the soil is 7.8 hz, but the consructions of houses are different , the glass is the most higher. And it is all in this sound and it vill be at brick houses 80hz. If it is only 40hz, we can hear it if it is very loud. Outside it is lower, inside is louder. And it is alwayse in waves. If we know, what works with variables intensity, solar power trafo, wind turbina, oil pump, we will be at the solution. Nobody thinking, only complains. At my street only I can hear it, but at beginning a year before can hear it most of people. But there most of them is sleeping and living on pills for nerves, there wase war at 1990-th and very hard financial situation, and now the corona pandemic, therefore nobody can to do anything. I just started hearing this in the UK. In both Mansfield and London. It is constant. It feels like everything is vibrating, the floor, table, my whole body. At night it gets really bad, my bed vibrates and my whole body vibrates with it, which prevents me from sleeping. It sounds like a distant chainsaw or some type of machine whirring. yes, I can hear it too, and feel the vibration. You must understand, there is a hard, very hard infrasound, what you can feel, but not hear, and the small part of this are bass tones, what we can hear. The infrasound is 130-160 decibels, and the audible tones are only 30-50 decibels. What can vibrate our soil? Solar power trafoes, a new railway, with high speed, and maybe with infrasound chacking and communication, or only electromagnetic field which crashes the earth's magnetic waves? Or airplane navigation, or other navigation for the railway? Radar? Wind turbines, oil or gas pumps, or big pressure pipes for gas, water, or heating systems? There is in Serbia, Subotica new solar power, oil pump, new water system, gas reservoir, railway station, district heating with gas, and small airplain. What you have got? I described it as a distant, faint fog horn sound. It lasts for over a second then silence. Then in a few seconds it repeats the rhythm over and over again non-stop. I never heard this (in Alberta), until moving to the coast of Nova Scotia 6 months ago.
I hear it every day in Illinois. More at night time the humming sound. I thought it was the refrigerator but we got a new one and I still hear it.

Mina Lunde it sounds like a sound wave in the sky and could actually be a sound wave in the sky. I’m hearing it right now and it’s lasted longer than half an hour. It sounds like a plane that never goes away. I have seen sound waves on weather data. It must be the same thing. These sound waves mess with the weather. Maybe this is intentional by some group of people that are messing with the worlds weather. We do know of geoengineering, perhaps the sound waves are added to increase certain places.

@@rimafair2539 it is not tinnitus as tinnitus has a higher pitch sound to it this one is a low frequency sound, I know because I have tinnitus and can hear the two sounds at the same time.
The tinnitus I can tell it's in my head but the low frequency sound is not coming from my head but from an outside source, and as they can pic up the signal on electronic equipment as shown in the video which you watched
So now I'm thinking why are you trying to dismiss it when they just showed you it exists, either you're scared deep down or your on here to create confusion

I'm hearing impaired in one ear and I'm from a small town in South East Queensland and this noise has been driving me insane for months. Other people are thinking I'm crazy but one night, my mother managed to hear it once in the middle of night. It follows me around from suburb to suburb when I move around. I only just started to seriously check the internet to see if I'm the only one having a constant motor low sound vibrating all over the place. Thank god, I'm not alone.
Same with me? Left ear. But this is not tinnitus. Started year ago. But I notice that many people mentioned dentist intervention and connection between time that they started to hear that sound.

I hear it right now as I’m writing this. It feels like it’s deep in the ear and the way I would describe it is it’s a pulsating low vibration. Kinda like an energy hum. Some nights I don’t hear it and some I do. And only in certain parts of the room. Im from south of Sydney. So it’s down here too what ever it is.

I am hearing it currently in SE Ohio. Exactly sounds like a loud idle engine a few hundred feet away, but it seems to come from the sky.

So weird. I just heard it in northern Maine. Thought it was a fourwheeler starting up somewhere but it stops and goes again every few minutes. Couldn’t wrap my head around it. @@MK-hs9ck It's not tinnitus. That's generally the first thing anyone affected by "the hum" investigates when they can't determine any external stimulus as causal.

@@doggo7741 I don't think it's anything to do with how good your hearing is, everyone has a different sensitivity to different sounds. I can hear bass sounds when no one else can. I went to a club once and could hear a different bass beat to what was being played in the room I was in. I asked my friends about it and they said they couldn't hear anything apart from the music in the room. One of my friends (who owns the club) asked me what it was like, when I described it to her she was shocked and told me there's no way I should be able to hear it. It turned out that I could hear the bass from the hardcore music being played in the room underneath us, over the loud standard club music in the room I was in.
I hear most days of the year a frequency in my ears since 2 years. 03:00 at night the sounds get more powerfull every night!
I live near an AFB ( about 15 miles away). I hear a sound every morning at the same time right before sunrise, and it sounds like the C-130 aircraft engines idling. IDK if they would do this.
I've been hearing a Hum for several years now, not all the time but several times a year, sometimes for several days at a time. Sometimes it's louder than other times. No one in my home hears but me. It sounds like a semi truck idling or a generator running. Sometimes the hum will go away if I turn my head left or right or if I'm lying down I hear it and it goes away when I sit-up.

I do have it and thinking maybe it's my hearing generating this sound since not many people can hear it.
to me, it sound more like rumbling like in the video and i hear it near night fairly often. my ears are young and healthy so i doubt its any hearing problems.
I heard it just now at 4am and I know it’s not a car or airplane. It was so loud I had to cover my ears and sounded like a giant rumbling hum moving through my bedroom
The only thing that sometimes helps is blasting music on full volume in my headphones. Almost until my ears bleed. So many sleepless nights.
Here in Seattle we started hearing it around 2012. It is much more disturbing at night. I can see how it could drive someone crazy. I used Apple's audio program Logic to create a pink noise loop (5 min) which I put on repeat all night long. I made 3 tracks comprised of audio waveforms at 20, 40, and 80 Hz to cover the various reported frequency ranges of the hum. And it actually works. The hum is still there but it no longer disturbs my sleep.

I have heard this off and on for a couple of years; it feels like it is vibrating my eardrums! When it first started, I turned off all the power in my house, but still the noise. I have asked my neighbors, but they say they don't hear anything. I have tried earplugs, fan noise, radio, nothing blocks it. The worst time is at night when I am trying to sleep. It comes through my pillow, the walls, it's all around me. It is unbearable.
im in new zealand. never heard of the hum before or noticed it. now aware of hum for five weeks or so. since start of total lockdown here - aka zero noise as we all stay at home and do only short walks - any argument for "accumulation of human activity" can jog on.

It's awful, I've been experiencing it over the last several years. Sounds like communications (VLF) to me... morse code at sub-frequencies. Makes me super anxious and irritable, and can even cause painful sensations during the more intense moments. Hope we can put an end to it soon.

When I camp out in the middle of nowhere I can hear the hum like a refrigerator motor. That is on the Welsh Borders of the UK
I started hearing at 2.00am, if I move head quickly side to side quickly it stops. Then when relax and stay still it's very loud again. Like others have said, a deep, loud humming, no one else in the house can hear it.

This is very weird. I heard this exact sound of humming under my pillow last night, it was very loud and made my ears ring. On top of that there was faint mechanical sounds, glad I'm not the only one hearing this.

Ive heard it twice this year here in the Philippines, sound was coming from the sky , no wind and all was quiet except for the eerie hum...and it certainly did not sound like a sonic boom. Wish it was a sonic boom as that would be a whole lot easier to explain and accept than witnessing something unexplainable
Well it's 01.30 am and I woke up to this humming noise,I live near Liverpool England.It's very low drone noise and louder inside the house than outside.

I've heard it for years in 3 different states. Tennessee, New York and now Maine. I hear it at all hours of the day. I've had hearing tests but nothing pout of the ordinary was found. I think it's something greater that we understand.

Started to hear this homing around this time last year. I hear it indoors mostly in the evenings and often get woken at night at around 2-3am by it. I also hear it outside during the day sometimes depending on how much other noises there are around. What's strange to me is I started hearing it last year around this same time and after several months it stopped. I then noticed the sound started again yesterday evening whilst at home and its still going this morning. Seems to be more unnoticeable when there are other distraction sounds around. My mrs cant hear it so guess im one of the 2% that can, lucky me lol.

So, I’m hearing this hum. Not a hum. A vibration every night when I go to bed here in Port Angeles, Washington. USA. I’m just working here on contract. I thought the noise was coming from some machine my landlord may have put in the crawl space. I thought it was a terrible idea to have something making such noise so close to someones bedroom. My hearing is sensitive to certain pitches and this humming vibration drives me crazy. I have to play videos with other vibrations and music to drown out the other noise. It’s weird that I can stand one hum vibration o er another. Anyway, good night. Thank you for the video. I don’t feel so crazy now.

I live in Austria and I can hear it too. I don't hear it all the time and not always in the same strength. I even hear it in the daytime and I heard it wherever I have been, even in Siberia.
I am one of small percentage of people who hear the hum. It has happened for years. I used to blame it on living in a fairly large city (like maybe and HVAC unit atop a factory building not far away), but now I live in a small town. The fact that I am not too far from a major Air Force base lends credence to the low range radio communications in my opinion. Don’t let the hum rob you of your peace of mind folks. Ok, this is what I heard last year and the year before. Not often but it was always in the middle of the night. I would awake from sleep to cough or reposition then became aware of it and it would make me feel SUPER uneasy! My husband never heard it just slept right through it. I had to put headphones on with music to drown it out but that didn't really help with the uneasy feeling much. It's like it's pulsing through your body or something.

Yes, I am from Serbia, Subotica. I is coming from vibration. Our housis are the instruments, they are resonated for this vibration. Therefore we hear it inside house louder, then outside. It is not everywhere, som streets only. After we get new suncollector, last year at November I hear it every day and night. In night vibrates under me the bed and I hear it louder from the bed, then from air.
I would be interested in trying a sensory deprivation tank to see if the hum still persists.

NO, it is not created in the body! It is totally external. It is omnipresent in the air, and one cant determine its provenience or if it comes from air or earth. One thing is sure, sounds as something unatural and extremelly large. Usually has a wave pattern comming and going, and sometimes is more like trompets, sometimes more as a huge engine. I heard it already 2 times in Portugal

FilK79 Unnatural. That’s exactly what it is. I think that only people who are sensitive seem to understand that. It is not natural. There is something very ominous about it.

I absolutely hear it. It does sound like a truck idling. I live in a small town in Michigan not by any large bodies of water. It seem as if its getting louder. In my rural surroundings, it is very perplexing and hard to understand where such a sound would generate.

I too live rurally and it appeared 5 years ago. I am not near any of the usual suspects like gas pipelines, I checked for all these things on the pipeline map. It is around all day and night and when I go outside I can hear it although when I walk for several miles it seems to dissipate. I live on a very energetic area, it maybe due to that and earth energies, it actually is a match for the earth heartbeat or OM when I happened across this on RUclips

Omg, Michigan here too! And started hearing it 2 years ago. I'm in an "oasis" city, not a big one. The two bigger (not even Detroit big) cities are 35 minutes away from us in opposite directions. I'm in the suburbs of the city.

I've been hearing this for years. I notice that the volume depends on where I'm living. I recently moved back home to Texas and now this hum is keeping me awake at night. It pulses and, to me, sounds a bit like someone plucking a bass guitar.
Tx sounds like plugging a guitar into an amp only not as loud. Referencing the pitch. It’s very low. This is recent here for me. Worse at night and external. If I cover or plug one ear canal the hum goes away. Freaking me out totally as it really doesn’t sound like it comes from a certain direction.

For me, this isn't constant and I only hear it sometimes. My husband tells me it's traffic (or the refrigerator depending on how tired he is HAHA!), but it's nothing at all like this. I can hear the traffic on top of this hum.
I also feel earthquakes that sometimes happen a hundred miles away from us. I can feel the shaking of this and have verified it with the online earthquake tracking site. So, I'm wondering if this hum is related to earthquakes or just the Earth itself.

Mum and I used to hear a low rumbling where we used to live, but it turns out we could hear the ocean from five kilometres away when the night was quiet and all the birds were asleep. It's amazing the sounds you can hear when everything else is quiet.

I've been hearing this for a few years now. I live on the east coast of Australia. When I first heard it, I thought it was probably the pulsing hum of the earth. Some people said it was hearing your own blood pumping, I also have tinnitus, but this is a very different low frequency hum. My husband says he can't hear it, so I thought maybe it was associated with the tinnitus after all, but I don't think it is, as since then i've heard of so many people without tinnitus, that can hear it too.

I too have bad tinnitis in my right ear and mid-tone deafness, but It doesn't stop me from hearing the hum, nor does it seem to hinder it or make it difficult to hear, or have anything to do with it.

so this is what goes through my head every single night when i hear the noise. First, i think of our entire life being a simulation. Like for example we’re forever in a coma. Life is really just a huge simulation and that noise is a noise i’m hearing in my real life in some hospital. Like i feel like the noise is a machine operating on my real body in real world somewhere and i’m like in a coma right now and i’m living life how i imagined at the time i would be. The machines can be heard at night i always think i’m just gonna wake up one day and learn i’ve been asleep for years.

I'm in Bozeman MT. I hear it in the early morning hours when I wake up. It's loud. I thought it was an annoying neighbor leaving his diesel truck idling / warming up every morning until I recently moved. I can still hear it. Earplugs help reduce the sound making it more tolerable.
I live in a rural area of Alabama. While working in my garden recently I heard this “hum”. I attributed it to the solar lights surrounding my garden. However, days later, I heard it again some 25 miles from my home while at work. And again at another location 50 miles away. My spouse works as an audiologist so naturally I inquired to her about it. She insisted I have a hearing test which resulted in almost perfect hearing. She has unfortunately never been present with me when I detect it. I understand that individuals of different sexes and ages recognize sounds at different frequencies. And most can be attributed to things like tinnitus or other hearing deficiencies. But this doesn’t fall into those categories. I hope the source will be identified.

@@OneTrueWord1988 I do. Pretty much every night. I find it is most pronounced when I put my head on the pillow to go to sleep. It's like a low, guttural hum. Some nights, I don't appreciate it's even there because I guess my brain has become so used to it, but other nights, it frustrates me and causes me to feel agitated.
I don't know if this sound I was hearing at many nights a couple of years ago, was The hum, but I don't know what else it could have been. It sounded like there was a tractor or something like it working on our back yard, but we don't own anything like that and anyway it was in the middle of the night, when nobody does farm works. And there was nothing to see, only darkness. Our nearest neighbor lives about 400 meters away and I don't think that this old man made the noice. It was very disturbing and irritating. I never heard it on day light, nights only.

I was trying to take a nap one Saturday afternoon and I couldn’t fall asleep because I kept hearing this very strange frequency humming in my ears that got more and more aggressive. I remember that the strange thing was the no one but me could hear it and I ended up turning on a fan to drown out the sound.
