Yes but Chinese have a different way of thinking about value and 'short term' vs long-term. They see short-term as the better win and more valuable thing to attain.

"Face" is important in China. Known as miànzi (面子). It's the concept of reputation in the West, but on steroids. Everything and anything is done to save face. Even when everyone around someone can see through his/her facade, every attempt is made to save face.
Being seen as too poor to afford something was a no-no for the longest time. Only in the past 1-2 years have attitudes changed toward frugality and excess now that many young Chinese are experiencing an economic downturn that it likely the worst they've experienced in their lifetime. So, from an everyday citizen perspective, face is more malleable than it once was, but from a CCP/CPC perspective it's business as usual. Meaning the government will go to ridiculous lengths to save face.

I enjoy your videos, David, but I strongly recommend not using phrases such as "and whatever" and "different sorts of things". Instead, either be specific, or omit those phrases from your scripts entirely. Generalizations always make an otherwise decent commentary seem wishy-washy and amateurish. Watch episodes of news anchors from 40-50+ years ago versus today. They were a thousand times better at their jobs (compared to today's anchors) in terms of how the information was conveyed to audiences. That's the level of professionalism to aspire to.
