- A look at my Tyco rc mini typhoon hovercraft from 1989, I received at 12 years old for Christmas. Just did a quick cleaning/restoration of my childhood toy from 30 years ago. Can’t believe it still runs after all these years, definitely cool to still have for my collection of R/C’s.
Thanks for watching everyone and hope this brings back some memories for some of you as well.

GOD BLESS CHEERS & HAPPY DRIVING
I remember getting the big one, not the mini, for Xmas in 89! I was sitting here in the bathroom with my 5 year old who's in the tub with a toy Paw Patrol hovercraft and I start telling my son about my hovercraft. Then I'm like I'm gonna find the commercial on YT and i ended up here! Man, i remember that thing not having a long battery but did have a long recharge time lol still loved it though.
Thank you for swinging by, happy holidays!
Had one. Some kid stole it from me back then. My dad was so mad. Never got me an Rc again. Now I'm grown up and can't stop buying RC's 😂
There you go, that’s what I doing. Thanks for watching
👍 same .
me too 🥰
I wanted one of these so bad back in 1989 when I was 9.........I'm now 42 and still want one 😫 😢
Thanks for stopping by
I had one, they were fun but the battery only lasted 5 minutes
@JohnSmith-qn3ob thanks for watching, I appreciate it. Be safe my friend !
I had this same one. They all went in water! So fun.
Thanks for watching
I took my typhoon mini on water. It worked just fine.
I so wanted this as a kid
I just picked this up today I’m stoked
That’s cool 😉👍
It is amazing that this still runs!!! What a classic.
Thank you John, I had such a great time getting this back running. I for one moment felt 12 again and brought back great memories.
I remember when this first came out when I was like 10 years old. My cousin got one for Christmas and it was so next level amazing. I couldn’t believe how awesome it was.
Thanks so much for watching.
I had one and I bought it to show-and-tell it was insane back in the early 90s
Thanks for watching
I got it as a Christmas gift in ‘89. One of my favorite Christmas gifts
I remember wanting this like nothing else. A remote controlled hovercraft, I still want it. I never knew anyone who had one though, it was unobtainium due to the price and I never got know if it was any good but deep down I always knew it would be awesome.
Thanks for watching, I wasn’t going to get it. They were to expensive at toys r us, but my mom and step dad got it for me. They were trying to ease my pain from my real dad passing right before Xmas. That’s the only reason I was able to get it, the larger model was the better one. Now the large model was way to much for us then. Cheers my friend
Me too man, I eventually got the Kmart version but it wasn't the same.
I had the mini, I did take it into freshwater pretty regularly with zero issues...thanks for posting, it really brought me back.
Thank you 🙏
30 years but always young ... Like you !
nice toys .
Thank you my friend 🙏😍
I have the full size version and used to drive it around in the pool. I was looking up the battery to order for it and came across your video
Thanks for stopping by, that’s awesome you have the big brother version.
Did you ever find a battery?
Had one as a kid...Was thinking of some of the biggest let downs ever and this came to mind...I think we had alot of carpet, it was the 80s after all, and so I put it in the pool and glub glub glub, it sunk...I want to say I was only able to play with it a few times before the rubber skirt on the bottom tore, but it still looked cool, and Joes could use it when attacking can forts and the such so it wasnt all bad..I remember that the motor always worked on it, but like I said the skirt was torn so it would go..
I wanted to do the same thing with my G.I. Joe’s and this was a big let down. Our 70s shag carpet did not like this at all and it didn’t do very well on the kitchen floor either. Thanks for watching
What a classic Donnie, It's a oldie but a goodie. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Ray, I’m so happy to see it run again. I enjoy restoring RC’s. Take care buddy
I’ll never forget watching that ad as a kid. I so badly wanted one.
Huh
Remember we had this and the turbo hopper . So much fun
I never actually owned one, but those things are one of the iconic images from my childhood... between the TV commercials and a buddy or two owning one, I wanted one sooo badly, just never got one. But when I think back on my childhood, the Typhoon Hovercraft is one of those toys that just screams 1980's. I love it so much!
Wow I remember this hovercraft and the commercial used to have my hype as a kid! Thanks for posting this video, took me way back to the good ol days
Nice I like the ol school rc's
Thanks 🙏 I’m just happy it still ran.
Wow bro, that's amazing. That remote controller takes me way back in the day when you had to pull the antenna up before you start flying or driving, lol. My first remote controlled vehicle was a bulldozer, it was a wired remote (not wireless), so I had to always walk behind it, but man, did I love that thing. My first r/c airplane was also flown by line, no remote controller... damn, those were the days!!! Thanks for this walk down memory lane brother, I smiled throughout the entire video! POW!!!
Thanks DJ, so funny talk about the wired remote controls. In 1980 my first remote control was a general Lee and it was connected by a wire as well🤣 Don’t see too many of these old controllers like that, now every controller is 2.4 GHz and nothing runs any crystals in the transmitters anymore. Sure come a long ways that’s for sure. Thanks again be safe out there.
wow,cool boat and great video
Thanks brother 😉🤙
I remember this I was only 4 years old great memories, I remember it needed 8 batteries was a killer!
Thanks Paul for watching. I’m just surprised I kept this for 30 years and it still runs.
I wanted one of these so bad as a kid. Every time that commercial came on I was hooked even more. Christmas was coming up and it’s all I talked about. Christmas Day came my mom got me this cheap ass thing that was all plastic with a fan in the middle. No controller at all lol. It just bounced around on the floor when it actually worked. I’ll tell ya one thing, growing up poor builds character 😂
I hear you man. I wasn’t supposed to get that for Christmas, but my father passed away 3 weeks before. My mom was trying to cheer me up, well try her best. Definitely know the poor part growing up in the 80s. I wore shoes from thrifty’s. That were made out of plastic. Lol just very thankful. God bless ya and thanks for watching!
Sorry to hear that. Big props to your mom, for trying to make things better.
i had one as a kid. loved it
Good job bringing it back to life Donnie.
Thanks Gregory, I love getting these old RC’s come back to life. Take care brother
Had one of those as well lol. I think it is still up in my attic with my tyco scorcher
My parents sold all my rc cars when I moved out. Really wish I still had some like this one
I loved my hovercraft always great after a heavy rain fall giant puddles 🤣😂
This definitely brought back memories, thank you! Had the big Typhoon as a kid but in the exact same colour, I remember it had independent control of the thrust fans (could 360 turn) and a cut off button for the main skirt fan which allowed it to drop and stop on a dime. Went through batteries like it went on tiled floors, fast - due to 3 motors running all at once. My rubber skirt degraded and there was no replacement, so keep that rubber skirt treated and protected. Amazing yours still runs after 20 years.
Thanks it’s over 30 years now, so crazy. Still feels like yesterday opening this up for Xmas. Thanks so much for watching!
Omg that is so cool what a classic
Thank you for stopping by
Nice man. Awesome it survived for so long
Thanks so much, I’m surprised it was still working 🤣 I was always so hard on RC’s as a kid.
The most creative remote control item I ever wanted besides thee night rider power wheel and big wheel
Still working perfect my friend excellent presentation 👍👌 tyco and Nico best Japanese toy company
Thanks brother, the 80’s was the decade of Japanese products.
This is the coolest bro
Thanks so much 🤩👍
That is soo cool! I remember those from when I was a kid, and how much I wanted one!!!
Thank you, I’m glad I held on to this one.
Great recovery of an old toy. =)
Thanks brother, I was happy when I opened my old toy box. There it was and I was so glad I had the controller still. At least the Crystal and it was still good. Take care of Gary and appreciate somebody.
Thanks for posting this! I've looked for images of this hovercraft before but never found it til now. I am sure I had the big model, certainly fits my memories, and the time-period too. I ended up taking mine back to the shop however - not impressed with the run time of about 5 minutes, and then 6 hours to recharge the batteries lol.
Thank you so much for watching
I used to put mine on a swimming pool that was 4 feet deep and it was great. Never sunk. It was boring, on a pool, but still worked. I think mine must have been the original, but the colors were the same.
There slow and this one was the mini and not for water. The large one was for water, thanks for watching.
Been waiting for this video, watching now brother 👍🍻
Pretty awesome bro, great to see an old classic rc restored from your childhood, well done bro 👍
Thanks brother so much, I really enjoy fixing up RC’s. I can’t wait for your pickup video. Cheers brother
man, i remember how awesome this was.
and the 15 min. comment? right on point. i remember it was 15 mins for me too. i did run it over flat water. it wasn't shallow, since it was a river, but it was flat, since it was very slow moving. i imagine they sink with waves...but that thing was super cool, and really felt ahead of its time
seeing it till the end, i guess my model was the original, not the mini
Sounds like it was the large version. Thanks so much for watching, I appreciate it.
Mine too. Awesome hovercraft
That's cool! 👍
Thanks Steve, definitely a classic.
Awesome Donnie hope you and your family are safe.
Thanks Heath, we are just house bound. It’s pretty bad here in California right now. Hope all is well and you guys be safe as well. Cheers
I remember that. Classic!👍🏾
Thank you for stopping, I was glad I still had this one. It’s not much of a runner but it brings back memories.
This is cool!
Thanks so much
Very cool. I remember that commercial, always thought that was coolest thing.
30 years later and it still looks great
Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks my friend, I appreciate the great comment. Cheers 🍻
I had that! Remote control toys back then broke easily, so I'm surprised that one still works.
Me too, I thought for sure something wouldn’t of made it. Thanks so much for watching and sharing your comment. Cheers
Cool. I been ripping the hovercraft in the battlefield game and reminded me of getting one of these for Christmas. They really are great on ice ponds for high speed performance
That is cool man, still in good shape too. Thanks for sharing that bro👊🏽
Thanks E, I have my old 86 Tyco buggy as well. I need to dig it up out of storage. Take care bro and thanks again.
You can definitely put it on water and will NOT sink unless it doesn't have the styrofoam. However the reverse is always an issue with them. And yes the commercial was a huge exaggeration of its capacities. However for those of us whose parents were capable to afford it and still have them brings back wonderful memories that ill never fade. My dad paid for mine in 1991 $97 plus the battery pack and charger (sold separate)$24 and the rubber skit which doesnt last too many years was also sold separate for $20.A bill signed into law in November 1989 raised the federal minimum wage from $3.35 per hour to $3.80 effective April 1, 1990, with a further increase to $4.25 per hour on April 1, 1991.. In todays money 2022 just the hovercraft and battery pack would be the equivalent to $268 to $289 USD depending on what year it was purchased!
True indeed, i had the bigger Typhoon, it would not sink even if you shut it off in deep water.
Wow very nice you kept it in a good shape and it works. Pretty cool stuff. Cheers Donnie stay safe!
Thanks Mike, I need to to find my Tyco buggy from 86.
This is so badass!!! Outstanding job!! I remember the commercial. I was 18 then. Great job of making it look brand new as well. It seems to still run ok which after 30 years is amazing. Also, outstanding job is editing. Very professional.
Thank you Ryan so much for the amazing comment. Makes me feel I’m doing something right. I love restoring these old school RC’s. I’m just happy I still have a few of my childhood RC’s. Thanks again Ryan and talk to you soon, I’m rebuilding the traxxas e revo mini right now.
@@BIGDRONEFLYER77RC awesome and you're welcome!
I had one it was one of my faves
Very good job mate 👍🤓, big like from Spain, and stay safe
Thank you my friend, cheers 🍻
The typhoon 2 was made for water. It had a polystyrene “emergency” float built in so it didn’t sink.
The only stipulation was that it couldn’t be used in salt water.
I used it many times on deep lakes.
It absolutely does not sink due to the polystyrene.
The larger one was for water, this mini will sink. Thanks for watching.
Had mine for about 30 yrs also but the skirt tore when I was younger and it did not have it on there when I threw it away a few years ago. I drove mine across the pond by my house many times. Never did sink. The only time I ever had any trouble was retrieving it from the pond when the battery died. They did not have LVC back then. Still have my New Bright RC monster truck from back then tho. Maybe I should restore it.. ? Lol
I would restore it, that would be awesome. You will be amazed how many people like seeing those old school RC’s restored. Thanks again and be safe.
I have the larger version. It has an airbag I need to replace but still runs. I used to drive it around on a pond with my brothers. I hope to fix it for my boys.
Awesome, thanks for watching.
Very cool 😎
Thank you 🙏
Nice one mate still looks good nice review on it great vid don 🤠🇬🇧😃😃😃😃😃😃🙋🙋Stay safe frend hope you and your family are well
Thanks so much Don, you all be safe as well.
Well that's pretty awesome bro after all these years it's still runs excellent that's awesome I remember them back in the day that's pretty neat you've had all this time you take care of it my friend some day you'll never know it might be worth something that was really interesting girl and I thank you for sharing it with all of us take care and be safe I'll see you at your next with my friend but until then Happy Racing.......😁
Thanks brother, I have my other Tyco from 1986 I need to restore sometime. But I like to get that 1/5 traxxas XMaxx up and running first.
@@BIGDRONEFLYER77RC you're welcome bro and I can't wait to see you get that 1/5 scale running that would be cool that's a big RC take care bro and I'll see you soon God bless and Happy RCing
🤟🤟Love it.
Got mine from Toys R US on those days!!!
Yeah toys r us was my candy shop as a kid, lol
Hey I remember this one! Like 20 years ago a school friend of mine had this laying around in his home! The skirt on it was torn though, so we couldn't try it out.
Thanks for sharing and stopping by.
*_Wet roads work as well and if there is a hill they race down them. Only issue is the pad rubs the hard plastic over time and tears.... Awesome toy for what it was.._*
I had one. It worked incredibly good. Only drawback was the battery went in 1/3 the time of a single motor RC.
Cool. I have one myself asiel haaha just got it from myparents attick, so i'll check itout one of these days. Ive seen the batterypack is missing, but illcheck your video again befor i start open things up. Thanks for sharing
You’re welcome and sorry for the late reply. You can find those 9.6v battery packs on Amazon and eBay.
@@BIGDRONEFLYER77RC no worries mate i'm busy anyway 😃 i'll have a look on amazon, cheers
Cheers
I remember using this on a frozen lake in Wisconsin and it was a blast until I learned that the cold really impacts battery life
These can run fine on water and they won't sink, even if the fan stops. They operate more like a boat in water than a hovercraft, the big Typhoon will go far better. The foam is there to prevent sinking, i have a Hurricane Hovercraft which is the exact same thing as this but from Australia. Only difference is the stickers.
I used the original one on a deep pool never knew it could sink, thank God I didn't got the mini
Hey Donnie ! Nice job on the clean up , and it's pretty amazing the rubber is still pliable after 30 years ! I'm jealous , it moves better than I do 30 years later !! 😂😂 Hope you're feeling good brother , stay safe and well !
Lol 😂 , I don’t move so well either. Thanks D so much brother. You take care of yourself.
I had the red mini Typhoon back in the day. I used it in the pool mostly. Never had a problem with it sinking, even after the battery died. Maybe the red was an updated model from the black mini or something?
Yeah it’s the mini and sinks 🤣
Hey Donnie do you remember what these would retail for back in the day? I always remember the cool tyco commercials growing up. Great upload bud
Thank you Chris so much, no more cool commercials anymore.
Hola, donde puedo conseguir el flotador?
I remember that commercial!
I wanted that hovercraft so bad
I end up with a nintendo because it was cheaper that this
I still have my original Nintendo with Robby the robot we got it at JCPenney’s a week before it released. We knew someone that worked there in Salinas California. Thanks for stopping bye have a good one.
@@BIGDRONEFLYER77RC
Mine died 30 years ago
I still have the hardware to connect another one
I heard about the robot less than 10 years ago!
I just found the old one that was a hand-me down as a kid. Barely worked then, but I might try and fix it. The skirt is near destroyed though and it looks like the larger version was the better one for being water capable and turning better. Maybe I'll try to tape the holes and run a lipo just for kicks.
also found my "terrain twister" which isn't as vintage, but pretty sure it also had broken somehow, but will mess with that too since it still had the battery in it.
Thanks for stopping bye you can also check eBay. There are companies that been remaking those parts. Take care and thanks again.
@@BIGDRONEFLYER77RC the terrain twister actually worked ok! So cool in snow - I think as a kid, I didn't know to let the battery charge long enough - lol. Cheers
Anybody know if these parts are available for 3d printing? i'd print one with some drone parts. My friend as a kid had one and could get it to go over a few inches of lake water about 2-3 feet out hed speed it out and back but it would be wet AF, but I was so jealous of him because I wanted one so bad and he would never use it which was worse loll. Stronger center fan to keep it high enough on water, just thinking out loud.
That’s a great question
I had one! It drowned in a swimming pool 😂
Hey Donnie hope your doing well. You will know me as David Smith but changed channel name as you can see. I had one of these and man it was sure fun, don't have it now wish I did. Anyway I was looking through your videos and came upon this one. Take care Donnie and oh we are living in the Philippines now just got here last Sept.
Thanks David I was wondering how you’re doing. Seeing you been having a lot of things going on on your part of the world as well. Be safe my brother. I’m trying to get well soon as I can walk and stand longer, I want to return to the channel.
I have the Mini also, but the neon yellow one. My bladder is much different than yours (doesn't have all those little holes) and it definitely can go on water. Wonder if there was a difference or I've just been lucky. Either way, thanks for sharing.
Yeah not sure with yours, Only the large model can go on water. I seen people take the mini on water, but it does not last long before it sinks.
My brother in law who when I was very young was just dating my sister had one of these. Always wanted one, and a fast traxx, my parents couldn't afford something like this for me. Off to ebay I go.
I wanted the fast traxx too, thanks so much for stopping by.
@@BIGDRONEFLYER77RC Just bought one of the original Typhoons with its original box. Took a bit to find a good one that wasn't crazy priced!
Got the big one for Xmas 89’, I remember the thing being very disappointing.
Yes they were, lol
Commercials get ya. Thanks for watching
Haha I had one of these bro wow great stuff man loves mine till I ripped the bottom and it was gone 😢😢😂😂😂
Oh man, that’s a bummer. Thanks so much for watching.
wow i played with this as a child, now iam 38^^ cool thx for upload! What do you think for a Remake with new Stuff Brushless and lipo and so on ...3d Printed? ( iam from Germany ) ... Thanks for upload!
I really like this RC Hovercraft!!
Thanks for watching, that would be awesome if this hovercraft was brushless. Banggood sells a brushless and much larger scale hovercraft, it came out a year or so ago. www.banggood.com/custlink/mGv37c0Rv3
I spent hours playing with mine almost everyday until the motors got so weak it barley moved. I knew nothing abuot brushed/brushless motors back then so figured it was broken.
Have Tyco rc mini as per video. Air bladder has cuts. No battery, no remote. Free to anyone who needs parts.
Cheers James thanks
Didn't these use up the batteries super fast? A friend of mine had one and it was disappointing at how quick the battery went dead, got like 3 minutes of run time.
I had the big one it was the coolest thing. We put it in my buddy's pool it was awesome till the battery died. They definitely do sink 😢
Thanks for sharing your story, take care .
I used to take both mine out in a marina...it does just fine on the water! It has styrofoam to keep it afloat if the battery dies!
I know the large model was for water, unfortunately this mini just sinks.
I messed mine up the first month I didn't know the mini couldn't go in water like the big one. Lol
Yeah so many people think the mini can to this day. It goes for a few seconds 🤣 Thanks for watching
I got one for Christmas. Didn't get the battery pack so could only look at it for two weeks. Its really loud and basically only drive on a gym floor. It doesn't turn. Seems like all it did was drive into the nearest wall........ Wish I still own one.
Ps it skim puddles with momentum.
Too bad it hovers 1/8 maybe even 1/16 inch off of the ground. 4 inches of hover was the dream.
Brother i have just like that too....but I don't have a battery pack and a remote control......where do you think I can but it? Can you help ?
For my twelvth birthday i asked my parents an rc car. I had had a couple toycars, but now i wanted a cool one. Eventually my dad convinced me that a hovercraft was wayyy cooler after spotting an ad for a 2nd hand rc hovercraft. Im not sure if there were lipos back then, but my parents told me those batterypacks were too expensive, so i had to do with regular batteries in a bracket. Needless to say it didnt get near enough current, at least not to freely flow water or ground. The only place where i could use it was on the parquet floor in the livingroom. I hated that thing and it thoroughly destroyed my idea of rc. Coincedental or not, recently i realised that as a kid i couldnt always be who i was, but i remembered how i loved rc cars. So this month, now at 39 years of age i decided to buy myself an rc car.. 🙂 i bought two 😁 I think i rediscovered a passion from my youth, only this ime with my own money, chinese cnc parts and lipo's 😅
Email to and@theedge.ca if interested in parts (comment below)
Thanks so much
one of the first r.c's i got
Thanks Jay for watching
Jej I have the same hovercraft and my one is still working as well
That’s awesome, thanks for watching.
Please do an update video with a lipo battery in it.
My brother had the typhoon and I had the fast traxx
A Dumbo Rc combo and brushless to spice it up?
😂 thanks for watching
Charge for 5 hours, run for 3 minutes.
I know it 🤣
Yep my friend had one and after 3 minutes it would need charging for 5-6 hours. Knowing that I never really wanted one as a kid.
