Maxxis DHF & Aggressor MTB Tire Review (Best Trail Tires on the Market!)

- I've been running these tires for the past 1-2 years on my trail/enduro bikes, and all I can say is: "Why would you run another tire??" This combo works so well in 90% of the conditions I ride in. This combo is the best tire combo I have found for Grip vs. Rolling resistance. They roll super fast and still offer all the grip I need! I will tell you that if you run this combo, you will not be disappointed!
Maxxis Minion DHF: www.amazon.com...
Maxxis Aggressor: www.amazon.com...
I switched to this exact set up after watching your Maxxis Enduro Tire Line up video. Ive rode with them all over the US and am quite happy. Thanks for the advise!
J.D. McNoldy haha awesome!!! They just work, never feel out of their element !
It's the best combo I've ever ridden and it's thanks to you I tried it!
Tobias Backstam hell yeah!!! I'm glad people are giving the tires a chance and I'm stoked that it works for you guys 😁
I run minion DHF front and agressor rear on my process 134. For light duty races (xc) I run the agressor up front and an ardent race in the rear.
Great video. I'm a huge Maxxis fan. Can't wait to see more.
So happy you made this video, I've been looking at that exact tire combo to upgrade to. I'm coming from a really worn out specialized butcher and purgatory.
Neema Ahmadian it's similar to those tires but the butcher is actually is copy of the dhf lol. Just imagine those tires but more grip and better wear life 😂
Sounds pretty good to me! Do you know what month the aggressor 2.5 comes out? I've been debating between waiting for that or just getting the 2.3
Neema Ahmadian just do the 2.3 for now! It's really good too. 2.5 may be October. Not positive though
Alex Chamberlin Alrighty, thanks man. I found your channel fairly recently and it's got some pretty great content. 🤘
People were switching out tires from being worn down? Your Maxxis tires looked to be in good shape. I ride more XC/Trailish stuff here in Illinois. No rocks. Thinking a 2.5 29er Minion in the front just for the hell of it. Keep the 2.4 Ardent in the rear. I'm not racing, FUN trumps all!
Love the vids, you've done a good job at honing your own style.
I just got dhf front and aggressor rear about 3 weeks ago and am absolutely stoked on em 🤘
273Awesomeness hell yeah!!!
DHF / HR2 - wet / winter
DHF / Aggressor - summer
North shore riding.
Just ordered this combo in 2.5 for my new bike, looks like it works well together. Great vid👍
great review, my tyres look like this after one season, but I never got to ride terrain like this.I love Maxxis tyres.
Johannes Nilsen so good!! That's funny 😂
Same combo I run. Very, very happy with it. The search is over.
awesome!!
Had an i9 aluminum spoke snap on a climb. Did the exact same thing. Wheel stayed true, but broken spoke needed to be bent and wrapped around another out of the way :)
Good to know. Ordered this exact set (except in 2.3) on the Mach 6 for a trip to Moab next month.
how were they??
Thx for the video Alex, I've been running Maxxis HR2's f/r but I tried the combo you suggested and thought it was pretty darn good.
The DHF on the front rolls really good on the flats, it bites hard in the corners when you're at speed. Due to the intermittent gaps in the knobs, the DHF reveals a tiny point where it feels like it has no grip so it's a tire you want to be careful of when leaning into the turns at slower speeds.
The Aggressor in the rear is great. I'm not exactly sure why people think it has rolling resistance but it doesn't feel much different from the HR2 but it bites really well into the turns, is soft enough to have good grip but hard enough to roll really fast. I'd say that this tire is perhaps one of, if not the best rear tire I've ever tried.
Other combo's I've tried. I was experimenting with the DHR2 in the front because of the slow speed issue I found in the DHF's. It's a slower rolling tire but it has much more braking power and grip in the corners as long as you understand that it glides less than the DHF's on flat, straight, surfaces. The knobs are spaced better than the DHF that eliminates the slow speed, leaning into the turn grip issue.
Out of Maxxis aggressive rear options the aggressor is the fastest rolling tire that offers grip in all situations other than mud or super loose stuff. The round profile is awesome and the center knob spacing results in less rolling resistance than the DHR or HR
I'm running this tire setup at the moment, rad choice
my bike is trail all mountain and I use the same combo at 2.30..and they roll great
Thanks for this review man. I'm actually on the hunt for a replacement tire for my hrii. I'm hands down going to get a minion for the front. For the rear I'm thinking of switching between ikon, aggressor and dhr depending on the ride condition.
Nice video keep up the good work
I got the Aggressor on rear and new Magic Mary up front, killer combo!
Mike Klement magics hook up great too!
I ride high roller II's front, and aggressor rear.
ROOTIN TOOTIN PUTIN I'm going to try that very soon!
ROOTIN TOOTIN PUTIN I run that too!!!! It's actually really good!........just a lil slippery.
I wouldn't recommend that coming from the DHF. The Minion is just that bit more refined and grippy. Highroller II isn't a bad tire by all means, but it's not as good in the front as a DHF.
FlowPublican yeah. If I'm riding whistler bike park I'll switch it to dhf front and high roller II's rear. I also compete enduro, and the high roller front and aggressor are my favourite combo for competing.
Different strokes different folks. The High Roller II really shines in wet/loamy conditions when you can set up a controlled two-wheel drift.
Maxxis Shorty 2.5 up front and Maxxis Minion dhf DD 2.5 on rear.. Can't fault it as an all rounder.. Bit more muddy here in Scotland!!
John Stewart oh yea 😂😂
Thanks for the quality videos
Cameron Cotter hey you're welcome!
I do like the agressor in summer/ dry, rolls better, but found out it's slippy on the wet roots and went back to HighRoller2 for fall wet and leaves. Minion dhf on front always for me.
Just found your channel. Very nice.
For the exact reasons you mention consistancy and predictable I run a DHR II up front and an Aggressor out back.
I run DHF DD and HR2 DD. I haven't tried the aggressor yet but I love the HR2 on the rear
Me too. Good combo for sure
On my Pivot Mach 5.5 front tire Maxxis 2.5 assegai and rear Maxxis 2.5 aggressor. My previous setup was 2.6 dhf front and 2.6 dhR rear love them both just like the 2.5 for the aggressive carving in the turns Maxxis all day long
I got a high roller on front dhr2 on bk great ride
how about roll resistance?
@@ravenmtb221 six I got the high roller 2 on front dhr2 on bk great all round control u can really put the bike where u want it to go
my favorite thing about my highroller II tires is how predictable they are. you always know exactly how hard you can push before they slide.
Running the same setup on my MTB. Great all around setup.
I run a DHF up front and a high roller 2 in the back and it works great for some of the loose sections and pedally sand parts. Might try and aggressor next or another high roller ran backwards for more of a pushing edge.
Victor Giannella the HR2 is awesome! They just don't last too long in the rear :/
Alex Chamberlin Yeah, not gonna last me any because I ride about as much street as I do trail :(
Aggressor rocks on the rear. I think that's what I was running when we did salmon run... they are a bit shitty for grip in the mud (but great if you like sliding 😁)
swimmingscissors haha you can't win them all😂
I'm currently running DHF on the front and DHR2 on the rear. I have also run DHR2 up front but found it to be a bit unpredictable in mellow cornering but fine on really hard cornering. DHF is amazing, super predictable in all conditions I've ridden with it. I am interested in running Aggressor on the rear in hopes of better rolling speed for climbing compared to DHR2. Also better for maintaining speed on hard pack trail. Those are the only two weaknesses I've found with DHR2 on the rear. Which is understandable as that is not what it was designed for.
I run a maxxis dhf front and maxxis shorty in back for all conditions works great
Kaleb Moore shorty in the back?? Jeeez. That's rowdy
I ride aggressor 27.5 in rear and panaracer FirePro 27.5. Front . Been interested in trying the maxxis Ignitor for awhile
My agressors worn out so quickly so I decided to buy minion dhf for front and rear
years later do you still recommend the combo? I have always run dhf in front and rear but want more rolling in the back. Might do the same combo. I ride trails and bikepark about the same 50/50.
Ive been running this combo the last year too and cant fault it. May get a dhr or HR2 when i move to van in a few months though.
That poor broken spoke.
Alex939 1 of 3 that week😂
I like my maxxis ignitors very grippy. The best tires I have ever used though are mavic crossmax tires
Bigfoot And Bananaman I've heard those a good!
Alex Chamberlin thanks for taking the time to reply. I am definitely a subscriber after watching a lot of your videos over the past few days.
Bigfoot And Bananaman sweet! Thanks for the sub! Each sub counts 🤘🏽🤘🏽
Maxxis HR II in front and Specialized Ground Control Grid (back). I ride an 29er Hardtail.
You might like running the Assegai in front and keep the Agrressor in back. Very grippy and predictable cornering.
I tried a DHF on the front in a DH casing and 2.5 width and I didn't like the pingy nature of the tire nor its lean characteristics. I felt very unsafe at the DH parks. I went back to my magic mary's. I think I would feel better if the center nobs were a bit smaller to smooth out and round the cross section a bit. I am anxious to try the onza aaquilas next.
I like a similar combo: slaughter DHF or slaughter projekt baron. winter here requires somthing a more aggressive on the rear for off piste trails though.
I would love to see what you think of the E*Thirteen TRSr tires if you ever get the chance to try them. Grippiest tires I've ever run, and the seem reasonably durable for the amount of grip they provide. Went through 2 pair in the last 12 months, which is on par with Maxxis for me and the amount of riding I do on Colorado trails.
Gerrit Padgham I've heard they are great! I'd like to try one as a front tire🤔
Well I want to sell one, got it rear, it slides to sides on braking and tears off when leant too much, pretty square on my 22 rim. Harder compound
Impressed by look of the rear tire after that much depending esp. when looking at the spokes. The whole race looks like a blast! Stupid question but how does the food and camping work? Any suggestions for a multi stage MTB race such as: what did you bring and what did you wish you brought?
I think the biggest difference between the aggressor and the high roller II is there is a little spot on the HR that you can use to slide. The Aggressor just sticks. Although when I initially switched from a HR II I didn't feel as confident on the side nobs but a little bit of time this went away. I also find that in my hands Maxxis and Continental (black chili) last the longer than other brands I've tried. But this is very subjective.
Eric O I would love to answer your questions quickly, but they do take a fair amount of time to answer. Hopefully I can address this in a livestream down the road!
Sounds like some cool future content! :)
I ran the Aggressor with EXO in 2.3 and loved the way it felt, but punctures became a problem. I'd be interested to see if the DD faired better. Otherwise I really liked that same setup.
John Ritter yea I noticed at home I can get away with an exo but once I start going to somewhere where I'm bashing rocks all the time that the DD is needed. Not to jynx myself, but I have never flatted a double down 😂 that's in 2+ years. Well a broken spoke punched through the rim tape. That's about how close I've gotten to a flat lol
Alex Chamberlin, good to know. I quite using them after I destroyed the first one. Now they've got a 2.5 so that's good.
Definitely give the DoubleDown Aggressor a shot. The dual-ply casing holds up much better to punctures and cuts than the EXO model. EXO is normally enough protection for a wide-range of riders but if you need a burlier tire, you cant beat the DD builds.
Alex, you're right on the mother fuckin money with that combo.
my mid to dry combo! My mud to wet combo would be dhr2 2.4 / dhf. 2.5
run same combo, LOVE IT!
What PSI were you running? What PSI do you usually run?
Awesome video! I am about to get new tires and I definitely think about Maxxis brand. My mountain bike is Diamondback Overdrive ST 27.5. On my wheels says “Aluminum-Alloy, double-wall, 650Bx28/38C ETRTO 584x20. What would you recommend for my new tires combo? Thank you !
Curious as to what tire pressure you run for those long epic descents, also as to why you prefer the aggressor over minion dhr in rear. Rolling resistance? Not sure but get back to me if u can.
Onza Aquila tires will be the way to go
julian royz have you tried them yet ?
2 uploads in 1 day?!?
Ryan Boardman my video this morning did horribly :/ that's kind of why. And that was one of the best trails I've ever ridden 😂
Hey, Alex, I'm 14 and I really would like to get into enduro. I have the bike to do it and I think I want to enter my first race. what is the best way to get into enduro racing? and what are some good things to do to train? Thanks
bro i just ordered this tire combo dude
Will Kirschke hell yeah!
Looking at the DHF outer knobs they seem so far apart from the center that make me believe that in transitioning from the center knobs to the outer that maybe it has a dead zone, will take more leaning of the bike to engage the outer knobs, no?
what about minion dhf + highroller II combo? best thing about maxxis is that they don't neglect the 26ers wich pretty much makes them the only tyre to use aswell.
shredfreak83 hr2s just wear out super fast
Do you notice a big difference in maxxgrip dhf vs Maxxterra dhf?
give that spoke some loving bro.
seriously!!
How's the rolling resistance on the Aggressor? I chose the DHF for the front and currently have the Highroller in the back, but I want something that lasts a bit longer and rolls a bit faster in the back.
FlowPublican the aggressor will last 2x as long at least and probably have more grip in summer conditions
I would like to know how grippy is the Aggressor in wet, not mud but wet rocks and roots?
Roman Lukáč richie rude ran it at rotarua and Tasmania this year in the pissing wet. Also, I like it all the way up under dirt starts sticking to the tire
There are 2 best combinations
1. Maxxis shorty and wetscrem
2. Maxxis dhf and dhf l
Hey Alex, good stuff. Get a gimbal, we are all so spoiled since a lot of youtuber's are gimballing.
Mark Kligerman I have a gimbal. It ruins every ride when I use it. I'm focused on the gimbal more than the riding. Soooooo I'm being a little selfish. But I like riding my bike and RUclips doesn't pay enough.
I have a gimbal, but there is a time and a place for it
Have you since experimented with the Assegai up front and has is tempted you to change from the DHF?
What's your thoughts on Dissector and Assagei?
This is the combo I'm running. Double down dhf on the front and Evo on the back.... I felt like the double down was crazy heavy, but I have a lot of rolling trails, rather than a long climb and long descent. Also, how do you like the WT on the back compared to a 2.35?
Hey Alex,
I contacted Maxxis to try and get an idea when the 2.5 aggressor would be released. The rep I spoke to didn't have any knowledge of any such tire being released. Maybe you can shed some light on the subject?
Joe Silva within a month from now
Hi ! Is there anyway you describe a 2.4 dhr2 or this tyre 2.5 aggressor? For the rear? For climbs and dowhill? I have 35 inner rim.
Just tried the dhf 2.5 at the back, didnt like it, had to change it, front tyre. It was so draggy! Not my taste, it was good on the downhill though.
Thank you in advance!
Thanks for the review .. how would this tire compare in size to a minion 2.4? I have heard the aggressor 2.3 runs small. I want to run the 2.5 but that’s close to my max on my intense tracer, so smallish would be a good thing! Thanks
Do you feel like running 2.5 in the rear slows you down as opposed to a 2.3?
The knob pattern would affect rolling resistance more than tire width. I am not sure of the gap differences along the circumference of the tire but i doubt that it differs much between 2.3 and 2.5 on the DHF or Aggressor. For the amounts of grip it offers the aggressor is a really fast rolling tire.
How would you compare it to a dhR ?
Keep it up bro
Rolling resistance is a lot less due to center knob design and the cornering is more predictable and less bite-y than a DHR due to the rounded profile
Correct me if I am wrong, but have you really tried every single tire at the market? Example , Wtb ,Mavic, Kenda etc continental mountain king 2.4 is a great tip
no one has
but yes I have ridden the better tires from every brand you specified
Can you tell us what air pressure you run
WisXC 27.5 front / 31 rear
What's the inner width of your rims? It says on the Maxxis website that Wide trail (WT) casing is optimized for 30-35mm inner width rims for 2.5 DHF DD.
Just found out the Fox performance 40 Elite doesn't have HSC!? Seriously why...
Ever try a DHF in the rear?
None Ya its slowly becoming my favorite setup! Wears out fast tho
I'm looking for less grip than the DRH. Will this do?
So I need your opinion man. I had my minion DHF WT 2.5 on for 2 runs and ruined it it was exo 3c maxx terra. And I was riding at highland mountain bike park. You can see the terrain on my videos. Rocky and rooty. I sliced the tire up bad and it's ruined. Sealant wouldn't seal it. I'm pissed. How much stronger is the DD casing or should I just get DH 2 ply wire bead tires?
DD is considerably stronger
Alex Chamberlin thanks. I ended up getting both DD casing Agressor 2.3 and DHF 2.5 WT and it feels awesome. Feels almost like a DH tire
LiveFreeandShred price
What do you think about that bike in general?
Been thinking about getting 1 just like it.
Carlos Saavedra if you want to plow over everything in sight, I would recommend it! It's a DH bike that climbs like a 140mm bike. It's very good but I might be looking into the switchblade. Might be more lively on the take trails at home
Have you ran the new 2.6 dhf? I'm running the 2.5WT now a flow ex wheel with the inner width of 25.5. I am wondering how the 2.6 will compare
Steve Podraza yea you will have better experience if you use the non wide trail 2.5. I have a 2.6 dhf but have not installed it yet. More volume isn't always better
Hey Alex, is the rear rim still 25mm iw?
What size you still prefer at the back 2.3 or 2.5?
Alex, what is your rim ID size
Where did you purchase the 2.5 aggressor? Largest I've seen are 2.3
Kou Yang I was doing product testing for Maxxis
Nice! When are they going to release the 2.5?
Its avail now
What kind of spoke lacing pattern is that, a square knot? Bahahaha
only the best!
Maybe for dry... try magic mary's, far better grip!
Been running the stock tire set up on my Hightower LT (DHR II 2.4 3c Maxx Terra) for a month now, but after having to plug two punctures on the rear (tread and bead) I am thinking about alternatives like your DHF/Aggressor set up. Only thing, with the HTLT the frame clearance is pretty tight so not sure I can run a 2.5 in the rear. How big a benefit is the DD casing for punctures relative to the weight penalty?
Tom Clark double down is very worth the extra weight! Honestly don’t notice it too much at all
What pressure do you run ?
Is one of the spoke on rear wheel break?
Erfano Bhakti yea the race was very rough on bikes 😬
What's ur wheel inner width???
Have you tried a DHR2 on the front? If so how does it compare to the dhf?
colt hawkins DHF lets you push into corners a lot more. The DHR feels "safer" until you really start cornering hard. It doesn't have the channel to before the sideknobs to really let the sideknobs dig in. That's just my experience though
Alex Chamberlin you're like a wise enduro Buddha
That's why people cut and shorten the longer center knobs, as I have too. I was very happy with that tire in the front, will try the dhf 2.5 now.
What tires would you guys recommend for my hardtail, I ride mostly hard pack or loose rocks and I'm looking to make my school bike a bit more aggressive. So far I was thinking about a Maxxis icon on the rear and a high roller 2 up front
The aggressor is a great tire for rocky terrain, however if you ride wet rocks you may want a softer compound tire than their dual compound
I want to run this combo on my enduro, but is the Aggressor also good for bikeparks?
chizzlay I like the Aggressor even more than the DHF lol. It is the best tire I have ever ridden and it can be used from xc to DH. Just grab the DD casing for bike parks!
Thanks for the answer, just ordered it in dd
Nice broken spoke at approx. 1:50 haha.....looks like it can now serve as a car antenna with the bend job
How did you brake the spoke😂
LBS GAMING Spencer honestly I didn't even hear that one when it went. I have no idea 😂
How much psi do you run?
Don't forget to fix that broken spoke :)
Paulo Santos I fixed it right after the ride 😂
He says it's an aggressor 2.5, and I cannot find a 2.5 anywhere only 2.3. I am changing out my wheels through industry nine from my old Enduro 26mm to a 305 Enduro which is a 31 mm. Should I go at the aggressor or the minion DHR for the rear? I already ride the minion dhf 2.5 up front
The aggressor is available in a 2.5 WT format now. Running the WT on a 31mm internal rim would be ideal
Aggressor is nice but on hard steep climbs I'm not impressed.
Brian Vaughn I haven't felt a disadvantage there but I'm a heavy guy lol. Maybe my weight pushes the tire in enough lol
Alex Chamberlin I'm heavier than you at 230. I was on s DHR2 before and would probably put that back on for those loose conditions. Had the rear spin out on climbs in sandy and loose rocky climbs.
Would this be an ideal set up for desert riding of the SW (outside Las Vegas)? I'm 6' and 170lbs; bike 2016 Stumpy.
@@DoNothingChecks Wondering this also.
Shorty front, dhf on the rear :)
Grey Hound I want to try that soon!
Alex Chamberlin it's confidence inspiring and great for mixed terrain. I've road it in scorching hot weather over hard pack, rock gardens, Sandy conditions and in the p*ss wet through in rooty, rocky and sludgy conditions and they've been awesome
how about for park?
same
