Podcast two days ago on my last day at work before two weeks in Vegas - and now this on my first day of two weeks in Vegas Dang you guys times this out perfectly! 🏃♂️🔥🤙 Let’s get it! Thanks guyz…!!
I looked into tires for many, many, hours and ultimately went with Forekaster front and rear. Extremely happy to see that tire made it into this video!
For my all around XC/Trail riding I use the Nobby nic/Wicked Will combo. Both in supertrail casing. Recently switched to Assegai exo+ max terra / DHR2 DD max grip for more endura style riding. Grip for days but so much rolling resistance. Switched the DHR for the Wicked Will and so far I love the combo. Even so much that I'm thinking to leave that combo on for my trip to Saalbach.
I have the same MAXXIS combo on my Trail bike and the rolling resistance is a lot. I want to try your Schwalbe recommendation and was wondering what compound you use.
I've been running DH casing Assegai MaxxGrip front and DH casing Aggressor rear tires on my bikes for years including my ebike, and always loved the traction. Thought I'd try out the DH casing super soft Kryptotal front and DH casing soft rear tire on the ebike and wow, what a difference. Traction for days!!
I ran Assegai/DHR2 or Assegai/Dissector for ages, but switched to the Krpytotal in DH casing and absolutely love em. Bike is a RM Altitude and the DH casings don't feel overkill. The front grips about the same as a MaxGrip Assegai (Super Soft compound) but is more predictable and has better feedback, also rolls slightly faster. The Krpytotal rear is the best rear tire I've ever run, rolls a little faster than a DHR2, has more grip, and is WAY more predictable. Kryptotal in Enduro super soft will be the the holy grail front tire for trail and lighter enduro bikes.
Also worth mentioning the Kryptotal rear lasts waaaaay longer than the DHR. At least in my experience. I would describe the kryptotal rear tread as cross between an aggressor and DHR.
XC racing in AZ = f/r Schwalbe Racing Ralph Super Ground 29X2.35 Addix Speed. Widest tire with the least amount of rolling resistance. Lightweight and still provides descent protection. Great grip on dry & hard conditions.
I was talked into trying the Pirelli XC RC by "THE INTERWEBS!" and liked them, but at about the same weight and rolling resistance, but with better grip is the Cross King rear and Mountain King front (here in Utah) both in the 29x2.3 Black Chili Protection on my 115 rear travel, 140 front travel Trance. I rode a 2-mile buff climb, and the times came out almost exactly the same between the two combos. If you don't have to slow down and then accelerate, I actually have a PR time to climb on an Assegai front and Dissector rear on a climb of about 1500 feet, which really surprised me!
@@Uphillbob7 deep dust sure, but a thin layer of corn-kernels over hard rock, I found that there weren't enough contact points and ended up with some washouts that really reduced my confidence. But in deeper loam or where digging in helps, or with some mud, it is amazing.
Hey guys. Can you make a video about continental tires? Explain models. Compounds. Casings. Something like you made about Maxxis. Maybe compare models between two brand. Thanks. You rock dudes!!!
This link has a very in depth explanation of their types. Granted that it is about 1 year old. I know what kind of Kryptotal to buy once my current tires wear off 🙂. ruclips.net/video/1ZymDy0xtpI/видео.html&ab_channel=BikersEdge
Excellent and fun as usual. As a XC rider, I'm going to agree with Liam about the Maxxis Aspen (see previous MTB Podcast). Having ridden MTB for 30 years now, it's the most surprising tire I've ever ridden. I used to look at it and just not get why it was so popular but I finally bought a pair and was shocked at how well they worked. The newer 2.4 MaxxSpeed is definitely the way to go but unfortunately my frame can't fit a 2.4 out back so I had to go with a 2.25 for the rear. Still very good though. Regardless, they are ultra fast and have a surprising level of grip. So glad I finally tried them.
Vittoria mazza for the win these days for me i have been likeing them alot front and rear. The aggaro on the rear works pretty good to and is crazy fast
I have heard a lot about this problem with Maxxis, but currently I run Assegai front and back and never before I had more straight tires than these. I had Schwalbe Magic Marry, Hans Dampf, Big Betty, Michelins before (dont remember model name) and Continentals Mountain King if I remember corretly - all of them wobbly, some really bad, some less
Bought 3 maxxis tires in the last year, all were defective with serious wobbles. I can’t believe these bike shops continue to sell this crap brand. This has been going on for a decade, they really don’t care to implement quality control.
Great video guys, i run the maxxis forekaster 2.4 maxx terra on my remedy. Really like them. I was getting so bored of destroying xr4s. Glad i found the forekasters. Swap wheels to the assegai dhr2 maxx grip dd combo for the heavier stuff . Super
@@certainperfectratio I'm just about to swap to this combo on my all mountain bike from a DHF/Dissector combo. If I'm going to ride somewhere really rocky I'll swap the rear to an Aggressor.
Currently on the Conti Kryptotal Fr/Re Enduro casing with soft compound and they are great tires, faster rolling than Maxxis I find and much more grip in wet and dry. The biggest difference I always notice going back and forth between Maxxis and Conti is the Maxxis have a much softer sidewall so I always notice the bike feels a bit softer on the Maxxis so I tend to just run a lower PSI on the Conti.
WTB Vigilante front and Maxxis DHRII rear. Currently running DHF in front because my bike came with it and tires are expensive, but the Vigilante has way faster side to side movement and shoulder knobs that ease the transition to the outer knobs. I ride on mostly barren rock, and find it really intimidating to go directly to the square outside edge. If I rode in dirt with berms I might not mind the square outer edge.

Dude's really went from Forekaster/Rekon straight to Assegai/DHR2. Some great tire recommendations in this video but too many gaps. -Sent from my DHR2/Dissector
I'm running the Disector rear for the first time. The treadmill pattern or side knobs are a much narrower feeling profile then a DHR2 imo. Still trying to feel it out to see if I like it but so far I feel like when I really have the bike leaned over in a tight corner it's doesn't match up well with the DHF2 I have in the front. It just feels like a narrow rear tire. I'm also running a mullet set-up
I wouldnt call the Forekaster - Rekon combo fast or light. It's a very versatile set for a downcountry bike, but it's not very light or fast. I had that combo on my Revel and switched to Mezcal - Barzo combo. now THAT is fast and light. Lacks some grip when stuff gets muddy though, Forekasters dont suffer that problem 😀
@@jeremyprovonsil7886 I've had my eye on the Agarro, I want to give it a try just hadn't pulled the trigger yet. I used to run the Mazza up front and Martello in the rear. This setup was OK, but I definitely prefer the full Mazza.
@@williamdungee4601 I’ve tried the Martello with enduro casing out back and it’s ok, super hard/vague feedback and went straight to Mazza/Mazza. Massive improvement. The Agarro rolls probably 1.5-2x quicker, still hooks up well on the edges, but if you push it as hard as the Mazza you’re gonna know the limit sooner than later. It’s predictable drifting, though, if that’s what you’re after.

Recommends the Forekaster at 1,010g for the front and the Rekon at 901g for the rear for XC/Downcountry..... Anyone else remember when you could get 29er Racing Ralphs in a 2.4 sub 700g? My favorite XC/DC/TR combo is Barzo up front, Mezcal in the rear. Very fast combo, plenty of grip. I run the XC-Trail version in 2.35 F/R. They're both sub 750g. So comparing the two, you're basically dropping a pound off you bike from the Forkaster/Rekon combo.
Hey Jeff and team, have you guys noticed how similar the new maxxis forkaster tread pattern looks compared to the specialized eliminators? I’ve been running the eliminators on my transition trans am hardtail. Love the rolling speed and grip. Got them for 75$ for two.
XR4 2.4 front and rear. Tried XR3 in back but it punctured pretty quickly. Of course I'll need to find something new now that they've been discontinued.
What should I be looking at to replace my seemingly heavy dual Rekon setup in 27.5 x 2.6. Looking for a lighter, faster xc type that I think better suits my riding area, thx

I roll assegai rear and front, will never go back to DHR/DHF combo, but maybe I'll try the Dissector at the rear eventually
This may be late and may even be an odd question.. But which of said tires would handle asphalt the best or recommendations ? As there's up to 8 miles of road riding just to get to upper park trails and back home. Currently i'm running Continental Zynotal 29 Trail/Endurance both front and back, rotating to save cash.. they feel ok on the road and packed trails but also feel sketchy as hell going fast down the gravel roads on the way out !!
That would be amazing. Trail soft would be great on regular trail bikes. Enduro Super Soft is going to be the holy grail of Rowdy Trail/AM bikes up front. I think for Enduro bikes the DH casing is still the way to go. Conti DH is lighter than Maxxis DH, but a little burlier than Maxxis DD.
The most interesting was the Race Kings and would like to learn more on how that was chosen (my similar bike has Continental Rubans, or Pirelli Cinturato M for more pavement). The “XC” tire set is fairly heavy trail oriented, Rekon front would be XC. Rest was generic. Also, how is the Assegai the grippiest ever but the Kriptoxantoyley the grippiest downhill?
I really like the Rekon EXO+ as a rear and DHF EXO+ front but cringe at the $90 to $100 price tag. It especially sucks when it ends up warped. I have been really liking Teravail (Ehline and Honcho) the Durable casing. Plus I always use CushCore and I really think that helps with the sidewall stiffness under load.
Yes, the Maxxis wobble is real. Just installed two Maxxis wobblers. Companies like WWC need to stop selling their tires to send a message until they finally address their QC
Enduro super soft when????😅 Currently on Conti Kryptotal f+r enduro soft and I’m reeaally hyped for enduro super soft for the front! Esp for the winter 🫠
I heard that the Conti's are difficult to mount. My mounting skills stop at Maxxis Double Down tires. How do the Trail and Enduro compounds compare in terms of mounting and tubeless tire seating to the Double Downs? Thanks.
I had a hell of a time with the Conti DH casings, expect to have to redo your rim tape and use metal levers. I didn't even attempt to put my Cush Core in with them haha. And this was on the fairly soft RaceFace AR30 rims. I doubt I would've been able to mount them to the DT Swiss FR560s I had on my previous bike.
Why no e-MTB category? They carry a slightly different requirement with the extra weight etc. My winning combo on my enduro e-bike (Crestline) and my DH bike (SC v10) is the absolute burliness of the Schwalbe Eddy Current[super gravity, Addix soft] on the rear and Assegai[3C MaxxGrip, DH Casing] on the front. Also running Cushcore front/rear, makes them bulletproof! 🛡💪
Ebikes don't need different components due to "weight". A heavier rider is far harder on the bike than a few kg from a battery and motor for crying out loud. Seriously, Since when does 5-6kg mean a completely new line of parts? Logic people...logic. you can have two riders side by side, and one is 40kg heavier than the other rider on the same fork and no-one says anything if there isn't a battery, but add 6kg a battery and suddenly everyone reckons they need "ebike" components due to the weight lol. You are all the marketing departments best friends. I vary more than the weight of an ebike vs trail bike every few months due to weight cutting for fights, do I need to buy new components every time i put on 10kg after training camp?

I really like the Rekon EXO+ as a rear and DHF EXO+ front but cringe at the $90 to $100 price tag. It especially sucks when it ends up warped. I have been really liking Teravail (Ehline and Honcho) the Durable casing. Plus I always use CushCore and I really think that helps with the sidewall stiffness under load.
Yes, the Maxxis wobble is real. Just installed two Maxxis wobblers. Companies like WWC need to stop selling their tires to send a message until they finally address their QC
You need to try schwalbe radial albert or shredder. I feel that is better than the assegai
Would you guys run those same combinations on emtbs or make different choices?
I’ll take a Kryptotal Enduro Super Soft if it’s made in Germany.
Tried to find TLD elbow pads on your website. Couldn't
Dissector front and rear.
Kryptotal rolls faster than assegai so why not recommend it for a trail tire? Is it down to weight, compound options and casing options?
Would be helpful if you mentioned the other tyres reviewed or maybe why you chose the winners
Race King was on the Olympic podium bikes from what I saw fwiw.
Run maxxis rekon rear dissector front both 29x2.4 🇬🇧
Your cut in edits are hilarious. The surfer guy almost made me choke on my lunch. Your videos are great! Lol.
We appreciate that!
Enduro super soft when????😅
Currently on Conti Kryptotal f+r enduro soft and I’m reeaally hyped for enduro super soft for the front! Esp for the winter 🫠
Probably before the end of the year. Conti is already shipping OEM spec Enduro Super Softs to Revel bikes.
Nice!
What about the 2.1 Kenda Nevegal? 😊
Hi, Do you ride forekaster 2.4 or 2.6 up front revel ranger? Cheers
2.4!
love my Kryptotal front and rear. i just wish they make a 2.5 front tire :/
Has anyone tried the new Schwalbe Magic Mary Radial tyres
I run Vee Attack HPL
Looking at that Forekaster/Rekon combo. Curious: Why EXO and not EXO+?
Waiting for the day to see how Jared's dad's jokes change after having a kiddo.
I heard that the Conti's are difficult to mount. My mounting skills stop at Maxxis Double Down tires. How do the Trail and Enduro compounds compare in terms of mounting and tubeless tire seating to the Double Downs? Thanks.
We haven't had a hard time even with the DH casing Conti tires! It certainly depends on the rim you are mounting it on, it seems.
DJ: F: Ikon, R: DTH
Trail: F: DHF MaxxTerra Exo 29X2.5, R: DHR II MaxxTerra Exo 29X2.4
Enduro: F: Assegai MaxxTerra Exo+ 27.5X2.5WT, R: DHR II MaxxTerra DD 27.5X2.4
DH/ Freeride: F&R: Krytotal Enduro/ Soft FR 27.5X2.4
eMTB: F: Assegai MaxxTerra Exo 29X2.5, R: cheap tire but changing to Assegai MaxxTerra DD 29X2.5
Now that Continental has raised their prices from when they introduced them, sticking with Maxxis. If I could get Contis cheaper I'd run them over Maxxis. Cost vs performance is always a factor.
I schwalbe, My brain feels more nobby than Nics. 😂😂😂
Funny. I run same exact tires for XC/DC on my Tallboy. Whats not funny is the stack of tires Ive got hanging on wall that I had to try to come to this conclusion.
This is very relatable 🥲
Whilest you make videos, I ride 😎😅
