whilst i do agree that the story line was very innacurate and omitted parts of or made fun of the original play, i personally loved the movie!! i think that the director/s wanted it to be a fun and offbeat movie. they knew it was an inaccurate portrayal, but they also knew that we've had SOO many adaptions of romeo and juliet that they decided to twist the story a bit, because we all know how the story actually goes. i also kinda liked that they didnt change rosalines character much throughout the film because not everyone changes, especially not within just a few days i can completely understand why a hardcore shakespeare lover would be upset, and i loved your video, but i still really liked the movie!!
Thank you for watching and commenting!! And your use of “whilst” is FABulous 😏💕 I definitely hear what you’re saying, and I’m so glad you liked my review. In the acting world, it’s drilled into us to ensure that our characters have an arc-that is, that they are different at the end from who they were at the beginning. The depth or extremity of that change is how we measure the meaningfulness of that character’s (and artist’s) journey. And so, perhaps my expectations were too high for this cinematic jaunt. But if someone stamps something with “Shakespeare,” ‘tis true that my expectations generally zoom to new heights! 😁 My biggest disappointment is when creatives feel like they need to dumb down Shakespeare in order to make it relevant. There were so many clever hints in this movie that they could have made this a subversively accurate *and* highly entertaining twist. But alas, ‘twas simply too twisted for me that it broke. When the subject matter is mocked to the point of almost being unrecognizable, why use the subject matter at all? Thanks again for watching and commenting! I LOVE hearing other peoples’ thoughts!! 😍🫶
@@ShelbyLovesShakespeare you are such a kind person omg!! i completely understand, i do understand that it’s a bit disrespectful in a way, i guess we all have different tastes and have different passions so we’ll all be upset about or love different things!! i think you’re a truly thoughtful person and i loved hearing your viewpoint so thanks for sharing your awesome video!! keep up the good work ☺️ ps. i would LOVE to know your thoughts on one of my favourite films, the 1996 romeo+juliet!!
I just happened upon your review and, at first, thought I would cringe because I actually loved Rosaline. Like a lot. But I really appreciated your commentary. Some of it I can see what you are saying, although Capulet anon and the way Kaitlyn Dever delivered the lines was one of my favorite moments. I appreciated your not totally trashing the film, but gave us a very intelligent review. I just subscribed to you as I want to hear more of your reviews. I am going to put Ophelia on my list. - Loren
Helloooo Loren and thank you so much for giving my video a chance! 😍 I genuinely do want to love anything that's giving Shakespeare a new twist and was happy to have a few really fabulous things to highlight about the film. Yes, I thought Kaitlyn Dever did so well throughout, and I appreciate you taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment 🥰🙏 Thank you for watching and commenting. Very glad you saw it as an intelligent review. Let me know what you think of Ophelia!! 👋 p.s. I'm a huge Disney fan as well (and even worked there for 2 summers!). Have you seen my "Mary Poppins Does Shakespeare" videos? Check out my playlist called FUNNY Shakespeare. I'd love to hear what you think! Have a magical day 😁✨
One of the things that has bothered me the most these days is what Shakespeare movie I could watch as I've done that so little and there're so many of what I could choose. So thank you, your review is vert helpful!
I agree the story could have been so much better. I did however like the way it ended because I had never seen a romeo and juliet retelling where they keep the original ending while also replacing it with a different ending. Romeo being intercepted before he does anything drastic but also being instructed to pretend that he did so they can both successfully fake their deaths was brilliant to me.
Thanks SO MUCH for watching and leaving this lovely comment Melanie! 😍 And I actually enjoyed that moment too!! Wish it was a little less campy in tone, but I agree that it was a clever moment. If you like that plot device, definitely check out Ophelia -- the Hamlet-inspired film I mention starring Daisy Ridley. In the original play, the queen (Gertrude) speaks sorrowfully about seeing Ophelia dead. In this film, Ophelia has tricked them... I won't spoil too much more, but I think you'd love it 🙂 Anon!
I have a lot of thoughts so ima edit this whenever I wanna add something 4:09 I’ve never agreed with a single sentence more when it came to this movie 😭 8:28 ooh um.. yeah not a map book.. It’s the same book she shows Juliet later 10:48 us theater kids/Shnerds acting like we don’t do the exact same thing tho (but with theater) 12:00 EXACTLY 13:12 yeah that name was.. it was there 15:46 maybe… they were trying to go with a laterrrr ✌️ ✨ kinda thing but I highly doubt it since I’m 99% sure they only used one sentence summary’s for research when making this movie
Nicki!!! This was so fun to read! Thank you for clearing up the book mystery and for these specific, Shnerdy comments 🥰🙌 So glad you enjoyed my review and so grateful you watched. Anon!
Hi! On an alternate matter. I just finished the audio book of Hamnet. Are you familiar? Is it something interesting enough to produce content around? I enjoyed it very much. The prose was lovely for me. Just thought I would drop this suggestion off. In case you haven't heard of it. I would provide a synopsis, but I'm sure others could do much better. You may enjoy it.
Thanks so much for the recommendation Rick! I did start reading Hamnet... twice... and I just couldn't get into it 😭 I have had so many say that I would love it, and I really SHOULD eat it up, but it just wasn't gripping me. I know I'll try again in the future. Thank you for the reminder. How far into the book did you get before you were really hooked? Should I give it another try?
@ShelbyLovesShakespeare no. I don't think it's remarkable enough to keep giving more chances. Having distance from my experience with it, I can say I think I was in the honeymoon phase with it. Hope you're well! Thx
Thank you so much! 😍 Glad it was yummily robust and I really appreciate your generous comment. Can't wait to hear what you think after watching the film. Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching 🙏
Haha isn’t it?! Would LOVE to have a talented filmmaker like you see it and let me know if you agree with my assessment. Plus it’s pretty 😁✨ Thanks for watching and commenting Daisy!
AGREED! He had one tiny scene, is quite young, and is never even NAMED so only you & I would know who it is 🤣 Zounds... More Friar is *always* more helpful hehe. Thanks for watching and commenting David!!
“Absolutely not” hahaha! The best. I’m certain at this point your review was more entertaining than the movie which I have yet (nor will) see. I may watch it solely for the purpose of laughing with you/being upset with you.
HAHA glad you enjoyed it! 😂 Oh please do. I would THRILL to have an equally upset friend. I'm personally cracking up at how stoked I got about that quill moment lol I'm such a nerd... Thanks for watching and commenting Lady Heidi! 💞
I'm actually not sure how much I liked this movie. I thought it was funny at times, and I absolutely loved the scene at the end where Juliet and Romeo were trying to talk to each other on the boat. That was hilarious. But like. Okay. I think that this movie tried to frame Rosaline as a petty and bitter ex and completely in the wrong for trying to get her boyfriend back. Like, of course she was going to be upset. The boy had told her he'd loved her and then cheated on her. Then Juliet is mad at Rosaline, and really doesn't give her the chance to explain herself. I wish we had had a moment where she was able to explain to Juliet what she was feeling. And I didn't like the scene where Juliet ridiculed Rosaline (and said she was better than her) for having very real feelings and trying to get back with the person who had said he loved her when she and Romeo weren't even dating. The whole scene didn't sit right with me. Actually I know how I feel now. I just wanted Rosaline and Juliet to be friends throughout the whole story and actually talk about the situation with Romeo. Girl on girl hate isn't my favorite.
Emma, I LOVE this and completely agree. If it's going to be about girls becoming friends, let. them. be. friends! And that scene didn't sit right with me either. They've setup Juliet as being one of exemplary character, and then she's suddenly diminished into petty name calling. Did you see Bridgerton Season 2? The younger sister character of Edwina is an excellent example of someone who is properly scorned, has every right to be nasty, yet takes the high road without losing strength or betraying her integrity. I wish both girls were awarded that in this script. But alas... Thank you for taking the time to write this generous, lively comment! I adore engaging with other fun humans who are trying to articulate exactly why something didn't quite land for them. So glad you were able to figure it out here! Thanks so much for watching my review 🙏😌💙
Completely disagree. This was an amazingly well done film.... Funny, great story, homage to the original... You can't flesh out supporting characters to the extent you are suggesting. It can't be Bridgetton which you keep referencing. You are right about the end and the parents not showing more sentiment and leaving like they did. But they had to for the film to end in the time frame Anyway, you are literate and enthusiastic. We see how much you love Shakespeare and would have loved you as my English teacher. Keep an eye open for my musical, Stealing Shakespeare, hopefully coming to a high school near you. Anon to you as well.
