Tired feminist tropes | Rosaline

  • I've been wanting to watch Rosaline ever since I saw the trailer, it intrigued me with the whole modern manners in a 16 century scenery, but it also had me very doubtful that they could actually pull it off. Because in order for this concept to work it has to be exceptionally well done or it could turn out terrible. Well Rosaline is finally out and here's my review of it.

    Her actions have NOTHING to do with Feminism. If you are a Feminist, then you treat everyone fairly: You want everyone treated the same, legally, and treated fairly culturally. If you are anti-male, or anti- any race, religion, or cultural group, then you are not a Feminist. Rosaline's character is portrayed a certain way, and that is what makes the WHOLE movie. She acts more like a superhero, and less like a typical female. If her character was male, you wouldn't have any complaints, I don't believe.

    You make some really good points, I think is sad how in media some aspects of Feminity, motherhood or cool things as dresses are portrayed as something bad, when in reality is not as simple as that. And in a movie setting it just becomes more of the same speech :'v

    If you don't like it, just don't watch it. Just watch the Zeffirelli movie. This film isn't even about feminism, it just depicts a modern woman trying to find her place. And tada in the end she finds true love in the very masculine Dario, a quite conservative message if you ask me.

  • @lovetolovefairytales

    What's annoying is they literally could have set this in modern times because in addition to being based on Romeo and Juliet, it's also supposed to be an adaptation of the modern set YA book "When You Were Mine". Which is why it goes so majorly intense on the whole Rosaline isn't over Romeo thing. In the actual play she didn't want him, told him no thanks, and he mopped and cried until he met Juliet. That's all. I like the idea of putting it back in ye old times for the adaptation because the book wasn't well received and had a lot of Juliet-blaming people didn't like when they saw her as being as much a victim as Rosaline. But, i wish they hadn't kept the forced feminist message and just let the story be the story.

She doesn’t know much about movies and loved this while I’m a cinema connoisseur and I have to say I very much agreed with your take. It was an alright movie while being very predictable (like who didn’t realize Dario and Rosaline were going to end up together from the start). My biggest grievance isn’t even the “girl boss” thing because that’s a given in modern cinema; it’s the modern mannerisms in a period piece. The movie could have been so much more if it was just an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet but focusing from Rosaline’s perspective.

    Sorry, but apart from the "gay friend" trope, everything else sounds like opinions with weak examples. And the line "feminism ruins a good movie" is quite the statement, that I did not find in this review. This movie did not negate motherhood. Just like it's okay to be a mother, it's also okay not to be one. I'm not sure why you are looking for these things in a movie, that clearly has a different theme.

    • @ivillu
      @ivillu  Год назад +11

      I'm looking for a fun movie that doesn't fall into this typical script pattern, the modern day "girl boss" "I can do anything a man can do and more!" lines. You don't have to insert that every 10min in order to get the point across if anything it cheapens the message. It gets tiring and it takes away from how fun the movie could be. That's my opinion at least, it's overdone and it's a wasted opportunity for better script writing as I think they actually had an interesting concept here.

    • @tiffanyl4829
      @tiffanyl4829 Год назад +9

      Because it's overused now? You can't find any positive portrayals of women who want to get married and have kids. The reality of modern life is something some if us want to escape from: hours of commuting, bosses who steal your work and keep you down as not to compete with you, your check half gone from taxes, no time for friends and family because you're exhausted from work. A little escapism is necessary from reality to mentally survive the endless boring routines of being a girl boss.

      While I agree that feminism is needed in certain areas in the world (not sure where you're from), this movie that is produced by an American company is not it. In western media there's way too much emphasis on things like "omg changing diapers, that's so degrading" etc. Like she said in the video, it's such an overly used trope that it gets old quick, especially when you're trying to tell a story. Feminism doesn't necessarily ruin the whole movie, but when there's too much emphasis on pushing some sort of message or agenda it does.
      Also saying "no offense" and then calling her antifeminist and homophobic don't really contradict each other.
