  • This is my review on training tips for raising your American Staffordshire Terrier from a puppy. The Amstaff is an excellent dog with heaps of great qualities that make it an easy dog to train. I did this video due to requests from viewers who saw my first Amstaff video, so I hope you all enjoy it...
    Quality Amstaffs are available from Tredanky Staffs. This breeder will NOT sell a puppy to anyone who cannot display qualities of a responsible dog owner.

    Pitbulls are amazing, I love them so much! They were never a dangerous breed, every "vicious" dog I've ever seen always had a owner standing back without the leash.

      Yes true apbts are amazing dogs, you just have to raise them right and work them right. They require a lot of exercise and socializing, and if they have a lot of drive and game in them then they need double the training. You don’t want your untrained apbt or staffy to become dog aggressive randomly, because if unchecked it is 100% possible through their genetics. But Bullies, pitties and staffies are all amazing breeds✌️✌️

    Don’t underestimate these dogs. They are ready to learn command potty train much earlier. Ours ran to the door to go out at 6 1/2 weeks. We always say “outside”meaning to go out of doors and then “hurry up” to do their business. They can have this all learned by 8 weeks. We never leave them in the fenced yard alone-ever- at this age. They do their business on command then straight back in. They learn very quickly--no hanging around outside in bad weather etc.

      But most people do not get the dog before 8 weeks as they’re still feeding on there mum

    I am my Amstaff's Deaf owner, and I use sign language to help Malou commuincate using visual language. I am not a pro dog trainer, but she understands every gesture designated for every specific command. For instance, I will sign "sit" and she sits, "no" and she cooperates. After all, I don't find the urge to be a pro trainer but to be a reasonable owner that allows Malou understand how to fit in the envirnoment using her natural comprehensive skills.
    I live in a house with hearing people and I am the ony Deaf person that brings sign language to the envirnoment as a native language. I've come to the point that makes me wonder, "Would Malou become confused with sign langauge and voice?" Amstaff has proven me to be one of brilliant dogs that can tell the difference. I've fronted a situation numerous times, a situation when hearing people said "no" that Malou seemed not to respond until I signed her, she then cooperated. Other times, it work the opposite way. It's her choice as long as she understands a command is to be obeyed, which is very important than focusing on having her to understand commands only in one langauge.
    All it takes an Amstaff to cooperate, obey, and show joy is to ensure he/she is given plenty of interaction with rules, and with freedom. Thusly, my hearing partner would use both, voice and sign language, and so do I. All it takes to not make a pet casual is make time and build relationship for the sake of freedom with obedience and trust. Finally, amstaffs and all other breeds have the ability to detect every form of communicatin method that show they have the skill to become bilingual, or multilingual. It's in dogs' nature to understand every individual that make the difference with others. I don't know how to say more to emphasize how dogs are bright.I am my Amstaff's Deaf owner, and I use sign language to help Malou commuincate using visual language. I use signs for sit and stay and to be completely honest it seems like she reacts better to the signing she's only 1 year old but I learned while socializing her that other people are talking to their dogs and just tried it and it worked and I dont know sign language but very basic and especially if she gets going I hold up fist she sits and with grumbling sometimes

    • @IanSanborn
      @IanSanborn 3 года назад +1

      @@jojofreelancer1210 Grumbling means mental challenge and that is a good sign. Everything between a human and an animal isn't just about the look and sound, communication finds all of us well only if trying many methods to connect. WIth one of dogs I am interacting with right now is having a hard time learning how to shake with its paw... he's not a puppy. Late language acquisition I associates with many who weren't taught sign language early in the school system.
      The only animal I can think of who can hone in sign language faster than any other animal is chimpanzee. But the question is, is chimpanzee the only creature?
      Teaching sign language to bugs seems impossible!

    @γιωργοσζωγραφοσ Thank you… now to answer your questions, yes I think an Amstaff is a great dog for any age group as they are loving dogs… they do play bite but you can easily control that, these dogs aren't aggressive towards their owners or people in general and lastly, yes this dog is very trainable, intelligent and a great dog provided you have the time to spend raising him/her correctly… give them love and they will do anything for you!

    Picked up our Amstaff (Coco) on Sunday from Blue Pride breeders. Enjoying watching your videos and she has a great temperament. She is a bit nippy (not hard just playfully) at the moment with my 2 and 4 yr old but I am slowly stamping it out with high pitched yelps and ignoring her. She is responding pretty well to training and will try to follow your video. Repetition and positive reinforcement works well with this breed.

    Hi Cooper's dad! Thank you so much for the helpful video and information! My husband and I just adopted an Amstaff puppy last week, Jasper. He's about 13 weeks old, and he is doing a fantastic job learning commands. He is doing GREAT in his kennel at night- properly signals to us to let him go out to pee, goes directly to the grass to pee, and right back inside, and then goes sound asleep until we wake him. However, when he is in his living area during the daytime and evening, he isn't signaling us to go outside. Instead, he is urinating and pooping there- at least it's tile floor. We take him out when we catch him in the act, but sometimes he does it and we don't notice right away, so we just clean it up. We also frequently and proactively take him out, using the keywords "Go pee pee," and it's hit or miss. He will come back inside and then immediately pee or poo on the floor! My question is, do you think we are taking the right steps, and this will just take some time, or is the living area too big for him, and he thinks it's ok to poo and pee in there? He was previously crated all day and night at the foster's home and only let out to play a couple times a day. Thanks so much in advance for your feedback.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  7 лет назад

      Give him a chance, just keep saying "have a pee" as he is peeing outside and tell him "no" when he pees inside and put him outside. He will learn, it just takes persistence and patience, but keep in mind he is only young and he will get it as he gets a few months old :)

I've got a Amstaff female myself however she got upstanding ears because I never taped or docked her ears, tho when I got her at 7 months old her tail was broken in two places so the vet had to remove it. So she's a Amstaff with no tail and upstanding ears which confuses alot of people lol :D Anyway it's also great to see that there is so many people that actually want to support these kinda videos, you guys being so kind and all. They are very smart dogs. I train mine with food and sometimes without food. Mine never knows if she gets a treat or not. I've been doing that way since she was a pup, and she's a just over a year old now. They need lots of exercise, if your a couch potato this is not the dog for you. Your dog will get into your face and make you get out of the house. Mine can be like a house fly or big bug. They need this, and to be honest so do we. You also have to learn how to read the dog when other dogs are around. Most times things are fine, but there are times when they are not. Have a command for your dog to to stop. Like AUS or leave it. Either one works well. Keep in mind this is a bull breed and can be head strong at times but they are loving dogs and lots of fun. If you bond well with one he/she will follow you like a shadow.

    I just got a 2yo Staffy x Pitbull type dog from a single mum who couldn't/didnt want to look after him anymore. I already love him to death, he is generally obedient and well mannered but has a few traits that I would like to correct if possible. I would like to be able to walk him off the lead but he got into a fight at the beach with a larger dog, there were many other dogs at the beach but it seemed he picked the biggest and baddest looking one to pick a fight with. Other than that he socialises very well. Also will run off if not on the lead and appears to want me to chase him, which is obviously not good for safety etc. He does not seem interested in playing doggy games like fetch or pulling games like u have demonstrated.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  10 лет назад +1

      You need to go somewhere without other dogs/interference and work on him staying with you "off-lead"… The dog needs to learn discipline first, then comes the playing and affection… I had a similar issue with Cooper however if we are in public and I don't want him moving I will shout at him to sit and he sits immediately so I can approach and put his lead on for example… All this can be trained in an isolated area, just do a bit everyday and repeat the commands, he'll soon get the hang of it…

    One behaviour issue i notice with you and your dog is his attention target. He knows his commands but he focuses on the treats not you.
    For people that wanna learn a dog commands, switch it up and don't give them regular treats. Give them treats sometimes and sometimes just don't.

I took him to a park and left the lead on him, walked only a few paces in front of him, crouched down and called him, he would come to me, then I'd space the distance out and he'd get used to walking to me with the lead on, then I'd walk him for only a few metres with the lead on then space that out longer and longer, and before I knew it he was walking no problem. Took a few weeks but we got there in the end. As your dog gets older he will get better, just be patient, put the time in and remember he is still a puppy, so don't expect miracles from him...

    I have a AMSTAFF and I want to know how to properly introduce her to other dogs without her always wanting to establish dominance. She’s 2 yrs old now. I have socialized her with other dogs every now and then as she was a pup and present. She does well with my brother and parent’s dog. They are fairly small dogs, but it’s other strange dogs she gets a little hyper over and it turns into her barking at them. How do I handle this?

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  10 лет назад

      Hi Vera, I found the best way is to ignore the dog, turn away from him… Also if he obeys the sit command, then tell him in a loud firm voice to sit so he understands the behaviour is not acceptable… If friends come over, get them to ignore him until he is calm. If none of that works, I'd push him to the ground in the submissive position and tell him "no", leave him there until he calms down and then let him up, he'll soon understand that jumping all over people isn't acceptable...

    Hi, loved your video and your dog is beautiful and shows how happy and well adjusted he is. I noted that you need the time and right environment to raise these dogs well, but you did not mention the breeding. How important is it in your view to get a well bred dog? Is it all up to the owner or is there risk with all the back yard breeding of pit bulls and amstaffs that you could end up with a dog with bad temperament? Would love to hear your opinion on this.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  9 лет назад +1

      +gordon pryor I did address this in my first Amstaff video, I strongly recommend buying from a reputable breeder otherwise most councils here in Australia (and other parts of the world) will classify the dog as a pitbull and prohibit you from owning them. If you go through a reputable Amstaff breeder, atleast you will have the correct papers and be able to own your dog. I know in reality it's absolutely ridiculous because it's all in how a dog is raised, but the councils don't see it that way and that's something that desperately needs to change in my view...

    Hi Ozzie, if socialised and raised property could amstaff be potentially dangerous for very young toddlers who may play rough and do sudden moves to trigger the dog's pray drive? Some victim owner seem to say it's what happened to them. And are they were raised with other dogs in the same house since they were pup are they ok with other dogs since they were bred to be animal aggressive and with high pray drive?

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  8 лет назад +1

      +Nataly Jara He needs to understand the difference with playtime and the level of biting. As soon as the level gets too hard, tell him in a firm voice 'no' and stop playing with him. He will eventually understand but puppies don't realise how much pain their little teeth cause at times, so give him time to learn...

    Id first like to say thank you for posting such great reviews,iv watched both your amstaff videos countless times before getting my puppy.I live on a fairly big property and have three tenants renting from me,i allow my 7 month old female amstaff to roam freely,she gets along with everyone coming in the yard even strangers.My question is,do you think its a good idea to allow her to roam freely ? Id rather have a socialized non aggressive dog than a aggressive dog that i have to confine to the backyard.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  10 лет назад

      I'd look at it from a security perspective, I'd hate someone to steal my young pup so provided you can keep an eye on her, all good, let her have some freedom… I'm trying to picture your setup to give the best answer but these dogs love to socialise but just make sure you spend some good one-on-one time with her so she knows that you are her master… I limited Cooper's 'freedom' with strangers when he was younger…

      I sure do keep an eye on her,i work from home and shes by my side most of the time.My fears are if just one day someone visits a tenant my dog would react in a different manner and someone gets injured,even though i have told my tenants to meet their visits at the gate to try and avoid this from happening ,they rarely do listen to my instruction..thank you for the quick reply ,lots of help for a first time dog owner.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  10 лет назад

      Ah ok I see your problem, yes you have to remember that your dog even tho she is friendly, there will always be someone out there who will (a) make a false complaint about her or (b) show that he or she is untrustworthy and your dog will react accordingly… give her the freedom but keep an eye on her is my view on it...

    I'm planning on getting a n 8 week AmStaff puppy within the week and I plan on keeping it mostly in the house other than obviously when I take him out to play and exercise, but I'm wondering how to house train the dog. Should I just let it out every couple of hours and say "go pee" so it gets use to the repetition and knows to go outside, and how should I let it know that it's not okay to go to the bathroom inside? Thanks

  • @underxratedxrage
    @underxratedxrage 10 лет назад

    My amstaff is still a little wild. When we first got him, he followed me and listened to every single command and aimed to please and was lovable and chewed everything of course. But now he hardly listens, I try the crate but when I let him out he runs out and charges everyone in the house and has a real hard time calming down. And he's getting wreck less with his snapping... Idk how to get him out of that, he thinks everything is a game and he'll run away :-/

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  10 лет назад

      This is common, Cooper went through a similar stage. When he thought it was a game and ran away, I'd tell him to "sit", approach him and grab him on the shoulder to simulate the "bite" in the wild and tell him "no!". He would try to bite back and I'd tell him "no!" again and push him to the ground in the submissive position whilst holding firm with the "bite" on his shoulder. I did the same when friends came over and he gets too excited. As I've said before hitting them does nothing, but if you simulate the "bite" like in the wild, they really respond well to this from my experience… You need to show the dog that you are the Alpha...

    Hello! I have a amstaff ( Bono) and is very intelligent and sweet! He has six months , and he has learned all the basic commands of behavior. But the problem is that he bites playing us (not hurt us , but it's annoying ) and he jumps to the guests. You got some video from that? Thanks , from Argentina, Maria.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  9 лет назад

      No I don't have a video on that but I can help... Firstly the play biting is normal but you want to make sure the dog understands when it's playtime and when it's not acceptable. You can do this by telling the dog no when it's not acceptable and stop playing with him. As for the jumping on people, if he does this you need to tell him no, make sure that you practice with him to ignore him, turn away and continue doing what you want so your dog knows that it is not acceptable. I hope this helps?

      Kikisz760 As I said in this review, something quality like 'Science Diet', but yes dogs are like humans, if you eat the same thing everyday, you'd get pretty bored of it too, so I like to mix it up a little, get a few different types of the dog food, beef, chicken etc and you can mix it with a big spoon of rice, egg or some tuna to add healthy variety...

    I have a 8 week old (9 weeks on Thursday) AMSTAFF/Pit Bull mix as well. He's been snarling/growling and biting at my hands. Do you think he will ever get over this? He shows signs of dominance as well by humping, keeping a stiff tail, wagging stiffly side to side.

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  7 лет назад +2

      It's normal, but you need to be firm and tell him no. If he doesn't listen use what I call the 'bite command' where you grab his skin on his shoulder like a dog bite in the wild and squeeze. He will learn that it's not acceptable but remember he is just a puppy and they love chewing things including your hands so don't be too hard.

      Hey, I got one as well... went trough that too, and i am no expert at all, my 1.6 year old dog used to do the same exhibition of dominance but no agression :), a couple of tricks that worked for me, put food on your hand and make a fist and he will come to nibble and bite, say off ( or your favorite word or hand sign, both is better i think) and in the moment he actually backs off you give the treat... he will learn very fast, right now is a baby dont ask too much but for dominance also you can stand on his bed and enjoy his "wait what are you doing on my bed" face, or take his spot while standing by pushing gently with your legs so you use your body to say me first. dont be harsh at this age anything scary can be traumatic, mine still looks to the left right and up of course, to make shure nothing is falling from the sky like that day with that horrible tree branch.... finally after 1.2 year i "fixed" my dog and a lot of his instinct drive and adrenaline looking behavior dissapear and now he reasons a lot. take care of your stuff, on the first year everything close to the ground is his and shall be destroyed. good luck!
