- Some of the most fascinating artifacts in the collection at The Gettysburg Museum of History are the pieces of art that emerged from the soldiers who had survived their time in war. In this episode, we're looking at some of the expressions of art that were painted on helmets after WWI which tells us a little more about the history of this conflict.

There is a monument in my hometown for the 85th 339th. Most were from Michigan. It’s unironically a polar bear. It’s well done. A polar bear protecting a VA headstone cross. On the cross hangs a dough boys helmet.

You are the best I'm a desert shield vet and I bought a ods hat and put the patches I wore on it I have studied the first world war and interviewed veterans and that always fascinated me as well thank you your videos are excellent please keep up the great work
Excellent video. I have my grandfather’s helmet. He was in the 137th Infantry regiment, 35th Infantry Division. It is not painted, but does have the division insignia painted on each side in blue and yellow. The paint is still pretty bright considering the helmet went through the Meuse Argonne offensive and is over 100 years old. My grandmother gave me the helmet when I was about 10 in 1973. I will keep it until my son gets it when I’m gone.

It's amazing how vibrant and colorful the paint is on these helmuts considering there well over a hundred years old. They look as if they were painted recently. Very interesting video J.D. that shows that even though there's ugliness occuring still a little bit of the beauty of what some soldiers did to pass the time away comes through.
Those helmets are incredible. I like the painted up helmets myself. Another great video.

Beautiful helmets! I have managed to get one Camo helmet from the Great War. They do not turn up that often. It was 10.00 at a salvation Army store, that was about ten years ago. I need to find more. Thanks for sharing.

Vey interesting. Even in WW2 a lot of the allied forces didn't paint camo that often just used helmet covers. I am lucky enough to have a camo New zealand army hemet from Casino in 1944. One of the only places the NZ army painted camo on helmets instead of putting a net or hessian cover on.
Great video, always love the painted helmets. I have the complete "grouping" to a Captain Combs who was the company commander of the 331st Battalion, Tank Corps. Just a dumb-luck "score" at an auction.
This is fascinating a few museums near where i live have a few WWI helmets that are painted in similar ways

My grandfather had a Belgium uniform beret given to him by one of his patients when he was a medic in WWI. I was surprised to learn, decades later, it would have been worn by a Belgium medic. I so wish I had known to ask more questions.
I have a majestic kerosene heater from the early teens and it's painted alot like that ally flags helmet, crazy

The 77th division helmet was part of my collection for many years as I got it from the veterans family. I wish I did not trade it years ago

My Legion hall in northern Michigan has a polar bear veterans uniform with patch, most of the men were from Michigan.
Maybe do one together about the wooden shoes :-)

at the end of ww1 walt disney had a side job painting helmets and giving them "battle damage".

Good video JD. When it comes to souvenirs from WW1 or WW2 I PREFER ONE HURNDRED PRESENT ORIGINAL like for example,,,, all original G3 rifle or a MG 42 or even a potato masher. ( LOL ) THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA......

You should see my neighbors WW1 collection he has two houses one is WW1 themed the other is WW2. His house is WW1 everything WW1 from the ceiling to the floor. He has every ww1 uniform all kinds of helmets and the coolest trench art I’ve ever seen. He has a bunch of metal lunch boxes they used in WW1 with some of the most ornate engravings I’ve ever seen. All kind of WW1 weapons and swords. He has all kinds of souvenir’s the US forces got from French towns. He has 1000s of medals from WW1 from every country. He was on the local news lately for helping people find their relatives medals that he actually had and was able to do research and find who the person was. He’s in his upper 80s and still obsessed with it he tried to buy my WW1 medals from my relatives. I hope he has something set up to donate it to a museum once he passes. I’ve never seen a WW1 collection like this anywhere.

I gave a question about the helmet with the allied flags painted on it. What allied nation used the same flag as the current German flag?
I think that was Belgium.
No, Belgium was to the left of this flag. The Belgian flag has vertical bands of black yellow and red. The current German flag has horizontal bands. It remains a mystery.

maternal grandfather's WWI helmet is/or was on display at the West Point Museum..he was in the 82ndAll American Division(before it became the Airborne)his is also painted..Ralph F Bates from Norwalk.Connecticut

I think he corrects himself when he says there were some marines attached the the 2nd Div (implying Army). That was my interpretation atleast
@@benlincoln7358 that could be. The only reason I questioned it was because my nephew was in 2d and them being in ww1 just didnt sound right because I've looked them up a few times in the past and I knew they weren't that old
As mentioned above, they were a Marine regiment attached to the 2nd infantry division.
The Marine Brigade, 5th and 6th Regiments and 6th Machine Gun Battallion, were attached to the US Army's 2nd Division. There's a great story concerning that.
After the Marines had gotten quite a bit of fame from the battle of Belleau Wood General Pershing was assigning a brigadier general to the 2d. The brigadier jokingly said "Oh! I'm going to the 2nd MARINE division!"
Pershing was NOT amused. "Damn it, that's a ARMY division and don't you forget it!"
Ironically Marine Major General (and future Commandant) John A. Lejeune eventually commanded the 2d. Division.
I never heard of anything to do wit the russian ordeal after ww1🤔🤔🙏

I'm a bit perplexed. For some reason, fully half of my comments are gone with the wind. If I go back and check responses it's like I never posted in the first place. The russia thing is often forgotten today...there were canadians sent into russia as well as im sure probably others,russia had been an ally in ww1 and by wars end was fighting a civil war...the allied intervention was all far too little, too late to do much unfortunately

The Tank Corps insignia was originated by none other than George S. Patton. Called "The Pyramid of Power" the three colors represent an amalgamation of the army's primary arms, blue for the infantry, yellow for the cavalry, and red for the artillery as the Tank Corps drew men from all three branches.
@@wayneantoniazzi2706 Very true. If you zoom in my avatar, there's more. The cannon denotes fire power. the tracks represent mobility and the lighting bolts mean speed. The 1 is article 15's needed before you're one of the guys.
