Someone from a private facebook group I’m in posted a clip of Beckman’s training with McCoy (?) the Aussie. It was a short clip- one that ONLY showed the part when Prince corrected the Aussie in the second video, and people on that post are bashing Beckman and Prince for abuse + being overbearing + the Aussie wearing a muzzle and “not being able to defend himself from the Dobie because he’s being violent”
I’m the only person who has bothered defending him there. Sad..

Quite by accident, my aggressive little terrier decided to challenge a Doberman. It was four AM and moonless. The leashed doberman stood his ground with a couple threatening barks, sending my dog running and peeing. In one felled swoop, my dog learned a valuable lesson. Shoutout to livestock guardian breeds. Keeping livestock and property safe from predators with a less lethal and more humane approach than guns, traps, or poison. Would be fun to hear and in depth discussion about this group of working dogs. Not very biddable in general, most not suitable as family pets.
My Pyr even had her eyes on the sky, looking out for hawks and vultures, protected me from a creepy man approaching from behind, and protected my kids from bum rushing swans and off leash dogs. Kept our property clear of pests, alerted us to snakes and fire ants. She knew when a situation needed a warning, a body block, or a true defense. A poor choice for cities, suburbs, and other crowded areas, or for inexperienced owners, or sometimes even experienced owner that aren’t familiar with training LGDs.

Hey Joel, I'm the South African in your coaching program at the moment (i could be wrong but im guessing im the only South African in your program at the moment) I wanted to just say something about the state of Boerboels in the world today since I was born and live in their country of origin. Boerboel which translated from Afrikaans means Farmers dog as Boer in English means Farmer and Boel generally traslates to large dog. The Boerboel's we see today are not the proper or original Boerboels. Around 10 - 15 years ago the Boerboel was akin in size and weight to the Bullmastiff basically topping out at around the 60kg mark. What also interesting to note is that they've always had to have their own organization even back then as they've never been able to maintain a standard thats why KUSA (The Kennel Union of South Africa) which is like the AKC, never recognized them and still doesn't. You'll notice that you can get very different looking individuals some taller, some shorter, some with wildly different facial features and importantly muzzle construction.
Now days however the size of the breed has become exponentially bigger which didnt just happen on its own, Ive known boerboels my whole life and then all of sudden these monsters started coming out of breeders. While i would say its difficult to be 100% certain of anything i would say im fairly close to certain that breeders started mixing in Neopolitan Mastiff and English mastiff into their breeding programs which has now produced what used to be a 60 odd Kilogram dog to an over 80 kilogram dog. Having owned English Mastiffs in the past i can see the similarities in a lot of the Boerboels but one of the most striking things i noticed was the sudden emergence of the black Boerboel. There was never ever a black Boerboel before, there were brindle colored dogs but never solid black, and then all of sudden out came the Black Boerboel. This to me is a huge indicator that Neapolitan mastiffs were mixed into the breeding as it was something that never existed before. So while they're huge strong cool to look at and work with dogs, ask a breeder to do a DNA test one one of their prized dogs, i promise you there's not enough money you could reasonably offer to get them to do one. And truthfully its not a very well kept secret in South Africa, The Mastiff and Neopolitan Mastiff breeders all know about it, even the Bullmastiff breeders know about it. so just wanted to give you some info on the Boerboel.
Also one last thing, having Worked as a Habitat manager, a proper Game Ranger in Safari Parks in South Africa I can confidently say that one on one there is no dog alive that would win a fight against an adult female Hyena (females are larger than the males) they can weigh up to Around 85 - 90 kg have a bite-force of well over 1000 pounds per square inch it just has to get one bite in and the dog is in a massive amount of trouble. One bite to a leg and it'll shatter it, and they can take damage and walk away from it like you cant believe. I once saw a Hyena getting mauled by two male lions, my friend who was one of the research assistants and I thought they were going to rip it in half. The Hyena clan came back to try distract the lions but we thought it was over already they managed to distract the one male and low and behold the hyena jumped up bit the other lion on the lip, the lion as shocked as we were let go and the hyena ran off, damaged but it survived, id go check up on her for a while and she made a full recovery.

@@My-22-Cents pleasure! But in truth you see things like this pop up a lot. Think of the giant pitbulls you see in America these days, there just ain’t no way they’re straight pitbulls, think of that Pitbull the hulk from that guy Marlon and dark dog dynasty, they actually forced him I read to do a blood test on some of his dogs because it was messing up the pitbull register in America and they found that there had been various mastiff type breeds, a lot of English mastiff, some Neo and even some French and even a little bit of Cane Corso so he’s no longer allowed to advertise his dogs as pitbulls has to now advertise them as American bullies. And then there’s all the labradooddles and the whole host of other breeds they’re intentionally mixing to create these new dogs.
When you do these things you take away from the dog what it was originally meant to do, it’s honed working ability. The boerboel was originally introduced into South Africa but the Dutch settlers who came into the country though the breed became more of a boerboel
When they left on their great trek south, the dogs subsequently inbred and it produced far closer specimens to what the boerboel used to be? Snd set it apart from the other dogs brought in by the Dutch. Their job was to gaurd the family as well as the livestock as they in wagons moved south, now while today’s boerboel can definitely defend its family snd the live stock form predators like leopard, lion, hyen, and African wild dog, there’s no way its newl
Size allows it to keep going all day long with likrle boerboelds of old or even a decade to half a decade ago

@@AntTheDogGuy yeah I don’t understand why they do that to breeds. Just destroys them really. I’ve always thought that about the modern day Rottweilers. They have that many joint problems, there’s no way they could do today what they were originally bred for centuries ago. I’m a farmer here in Australia and have Australian cattle dogs and kelpies, so relatively young breeds in the scheme of things. I saw a comment on a post from someone in America talking about their “miniature cattle dog”. I thought to myself why? I just don’t understand all these “designer dogs” people make up and put a crazy name and a crazy price on them and people pay it, then wonder why they have so many issue with their health and behaviour. I didn’t know that they made Hulks owner do that. I do know the dog though. I guess that’s where the American Bullie kind of kicked off. I’ve heard it more and more over recent years.

At our old farm, although we didn't hunt, we had trail cameras set up to keep an eye on predators and we always had a parade of animals going by. Racoons, deer, bobcats, coyotes, stray cows, an occasional heron, egrets, wood ducks. It was always fun to see what would be on the next video. That bobcat footage made us start taking weapons with us whenever we went into the woods. As for the coyotes, we didn't always get footage of them, but we could hear them. Once in a while they would get close to our birds and I would (stupidly) go out with a flashlight and a club and chase them away.

Horse meat: I think Eric is right on in that it's a cultural taboo in the USA because of the best friend factor. Horse meat is eaten in Asia and Europe, and I think is especially popular in Italy.
Horses were eaten by humans long before they were domesticated.
You can thank Pope Gregory III for starting the taboo on eating horse meat - he banned it in the year 732 because the pre-Christian Germanic tribes ate horse meat in their religious ceremonies, and as with many other cultural traditions, the Catholic Church tried to smash anything that opposed conversion - eating horse meat was one of those traditions.

I see a lot of my boy when I watch prince. Extreme in his intelligence, his fine temperment, his relationship with his handler. He picks up on every single thing about Joel's movements, facial cues, his autonomic functions (breathing heart rate), his alertness level to a dog, his mood etc. and he watches Joel's reactions in those to every movement of the dog. Joel has set him up for successful reading of his body language right. They clearly have a supreme bond. They've proven to each other that they can reliably communicate back and forth. That's where the trust comes. It works they same way with humans as well. That's when you find insanely close people too. I can't even pretend to be a certain way if I don't truly think or feel it cause he'll call my shit. I trust mine the same way, the difference compared to both pairs and others? We had the opportunity to train and spend a lot (I mean a lot a lot) of time watching and reading and learning from each other. Mine drives me insane, but (he's a guard/watch dog) nobody will ever get closer to me than I ant with him around cause I taught him to read many things in my body language. From what it looks like when I invite someone near, when I'm being nice friendly but super super uncomfortable, when I'm untrusting of someone, when someone gets to close, and much more including when I don't what someone near him either. He'll automatically come sit up against me in some way or stand/sit between me and someone else, or stand in front of me or them growling with laser eyes until I tell him it's ok then he continue to watch that person incase my judgement may be off or if he thinks it is off. This literally took about 2 years of daily training him in obedience, nosework, communication, and medical alerting too. Still training often as well.
Having a dog that is "perfect" does take a lot of time and work. And it takes 50x the discipline patience and self motivation that most have.
So accept your dog as they are, have a little patience and understanding, you are learning to read body language. Not providing them some intelligence, they are born with intelligence. Don't fool yourself or they will!

Again ex Game ranger here, The African Wild Dog is extremely endangered, to put it in perspective The Kruger National park which i give the figures for below has around 2000 Hyena but only around 300 wild dog Huge pack sizes are extremely rare these days one of the largest true packs meaning adult dogs was about 25, rarely to we see higher than that often when they reach subasulthood they prepare to leabe the pack to start other packs so that they can breed since its only the Alpha pair that breeds in a pack. Because of their endangered status when private reserves are lucky enough to have them they try to find habitats for them where they will not have problems competing for food. If they were in an area with a high Hyena population they would constantly be getting pushed of the kills they made as the hyena would simply follow them, wait for them to make a kill and then because it is an area with a high hyena population the clan sizes will be big as well and so the Wild dogs being far smaller wouldn't be able to stand their ground. Hyenas can hunt for themselves and do in many areas but in cases like these why expend the energy. A big clan of Hyena will push lions off of a kill, unless there's an adult male lion there, then they wont risk it. The reason they seem like bullies is that in Private areas that lucky enough to have them the Hyena population will be small thus they wont tolerate a hyena around them, but if the tables were turned it would be the Hyena that was the bully. In vast natural areas like the Kruger National Park which over 2 million hectares (4 942 107 acres) it makes far less of a difference as they will have ample area to segregate themselves from one another. Also bear in mind that wildlife shows tend to show you the worst things like wild dogs bullying hyenas, ive seen so many wild dog kills lost to hyenas, that why they devour them so quickly cause something bigger than them could come along and chase them off it, and its also why their success rate is so good, it needs to be in case they loose meals to other predators. They are amazing animals and to watch them hunt is spectacular. Its interesting that you spoke of them looking like dogs, they were very nearly put in that genus, but then the ecologists and taxonomists decided because they are born lacking the dew claw they cant be in the same Genus as dogs so their scientific name is Lycaon pictus, the Jackals in Africa however like the Black Baked Jackal and the Side Striped Jackal fall into the same Genus as Dogs which is Canis, the Black Backed Jackal is Canis mesomelas

To be completely fair to african wild dogs, it is generally the hyenas that start the fight. They don't generally seek out spotted hyenas to bully them (it's on sight with leopards tough, and with a good reason). They kill pretty fast, non of that yanking that wolves do, they seem to manage to cut trough tissues really well and death follows in couple of minutes (unless the prey is very large like cape buffalo or eland). In comparison it can take about half an hour for a lion to strangle a wildebeest.

Too big. All bull-mastiff type breeds were actually around 50-70 lbs when they were real working dogs. Many were even as low as 40 lbs. This is well documented in the history books AND also well verified by the archaeological record. Large dogs were bull-mastiff X to celtic sighthound to make a "boarhound". THEN you might get these 100-140 lbs dogs, because they stretch up to 27-32 inches tall and still retain some bullish musculature. But a bulldog or bull-mastiff should not be anything like that. They only are now because they have no actual performance demands. If your 140 lbs bull-mastiff was asked to perform the roles that shaped the breed- tackling bulls, boars, bears in close quarter combat ... it would soon be found out. People still do these jobs with dogs and show you what actually works.

The dog trainer that was questioned is Larry Krohn. Not hard at all to connect those dots. Everything I've seen from him is up & up. He's a heuristic learner drawing from his own experiences, including his mistakes which he does not shy away from at all - he falls into the "Please DO NOT repeat my mistakes" camp of dog trainers. You can tell he wants people who he's never even come into direct contact with to benefit from his knowledge so they can have a better dog ownership experience. The other thing I noticed about him that I really like is he will identify other honest, well rounded trainers that he can learn from and will contact them for the purpose of learning from them. He hates to do sit down podcast interviews, but he will do them occasionally. He did one with Robert Cabral and another with Shield K9 (Haz Othman) last year. And he did a pretty good sit down rant on the state of dog training a few days ago that is beneficial for getting dog owners perspectives adjusted toward the underlying relationship between owner and dog - it was a very good listen.

Bull-mastiffs were bred by crossing 20-30 lbs baiting bulldogs with retired boarhound "english mastiffs" that were living as "chamber hounds" at the time. Those english mastiffs also at the time looked like great danes (and were simply the english variety of great dane, the english boarhound as opposed to the german boarhound), rather than english mastiffs as we know them today (have since been recreated with stupid irrational outcrosses). They would cross these baiting bloodsport little pit bulldogs (used in bull baits, bear baits, lion baits, dog fights, whatever) with something big to get them ready to be out in the field catching boars and bears and leopards and whatever else english men were encountering out in the exotic reaches of the colonial empire. Modifying urban baiting bulldogs for the old country applications which had since been lost in england, but now were found again with colonialism. That is originally why the bull-mastiff mix was being done, and the retired boarhounds of Lyme Hall were one of the preferred "mastiff" components. No good as is because like I said, they were long retired pets. Crossed with a game bulldog and they are snapped back into their former glory. The one application that remained in England for such a dog was hunting "the ultimate game"- man. Gameskeepers would also do the mix for the purpose of breeding attack dogs to set upon poachers and other criminals, and the police dabbled as well. Man as a game animal actually calls for a larger bull-mastiff, maybe counter intuitively, when compared to boars and leopards and bears and wild bovines and etc. The big game hunters of the colonies actually had bullmastiffs that rarely exceeded 60 lbs, and often were as low as 45. However when breeding for attacking humans it was found that a bigger dog was better, a lot of the negatives of size would not be realised against a man, and the positives of size would be extra beneficial. But by "bigger" I mean around 90 lbs. This was all well documented by the godfather of bullmastiffs William Burton. You can look him up and read about his "man-catching bull-mastiffs" like "Thorneywood terror" which were famous around 1900 and are the foundation for the bullmastiff breed. The fact many bullmastiffs now, both the actual bullmastiff breed and other bull-mastiff hybrid derived breeds like - the presa canario, cane corso, neapolitan mastiff, boerboel, dogue de bordeaux, etc are now regularly 150+ lbs is actually just really sad and pathetic. These are just bloated and inflated ruined pet dogs that essentially could never work a real serious "seizer" role. Now some serious working "seizer" type dogs CAN weigh 140 to possibly even 150 lbs, but they will be boarhounds, not straight catch dogs but running catch dogs where the bull-mastiff component is mixed again to a very tall running sighthound, and then they acquire that sighthound height and pack some bull-mastiff muscle onto it and are still (potentially) mobile and athletic around 90-140 lbs or so. But a straight bull or bull-mastiff type should really never be over 90 lbs, and if they were asked to do actual catch work on dangerous game they never would be.

No different to "xxl American bullies" and all that nonsense. There's not going to be an exception, the work itself dictates what shape and size of dog is suitable, and all the work is still being done somewhere or another (by mongrels) showing what kind of dog works. These 150 lbs blobs are no where to be seen anywhere near the real jobs.

Your tax topic discussion missed the mark several times. Current estate exemption amounts $13.61 million/person and it goes up every year with inflation (Edit: You don't have to "create" this exemption; it's automatic. However, if you have any significant amount in assets, creating a trust is an absolute must so that the government doesn't take even more money when your estate goes through probate.) With proper estate planning, a married couple can allow $27.22 million in assets to flow to their beneficiaries tax free and even more with annual gifting and other estate planning. There are virtually no family farms in the United States that fall into this category. Furthermore, the IRS is very easy to work with regarding these taxes and you can easily extend the payments on these taxes over 10 years. Surprisingly, California does not tax estates.
These amounts could be cut in half in 2026 if the recent tax law changes are allowed to expire, but the exemption amount is still predicted to be around $6.8 million/person.

Genuinely curious. I don't think this is a one size fits all argument, ever. I believe you can mistreat a dog in 1 way or another and it will become more aggressive. Sometimes that same dog just shuts down and won't be outwardly aggressive for no apparent reason. Or you can train it that way without mistreatment and it'll be good at what you've trained but just simply tapping into what was genetically already there is what has been done correct?

Yes, I’ve worked with Border Collie also and I do believe some dogs are genetically predisposed to being a stronger more willed dog. That’s why a lot of the police dogs fail because they just don’t have that strong desire to put their life on the hand put on a whole I believe the dogs. That most trainers are working with and have problems with with going after other dogs, all stems to fear, but I will say it’s most, but not all.

@williammccartney4833 it's about time people stop clogging comments for attention...love when we get 10 people claiming first...it's stupid and detracts...especially on tech channels when comments can help with discussing problems

There are dozens upon dozens that hate that. It actually shows that dominance really is a thing and the brainwashed scholatically indoctrinated force free trainers are dominance deniers.
