But I still watch every new Thrasher video part coming out. And I still have dreams about not quite being able to frontside flip (was my favorite looking trick but could never quite do them).

@@philipdahl8767 I believe it was the Tony Hawk graphic like the one hanging on the wall of this episode m, definitely was popsicle shape because it was my first modern shape but i'm not 100% sure. It was used (supposedly by Jason Lee because I bought it off his supposed cousin Boyd at school). Cool if it was true, either way I was stoked I got it cheap haha.
@Mac Fleming This was at Spring View but I don't remember his last name. That name sounds vaguely right. I remember it not being Lee. It's possible he didn't go to my school and that we just met up on the streets. I vaguely remember going to his house in HB. I also think he wore Hawaiin shirts and shorts a lot if that rings a bell, haha. (the weird things we remember)
We just had a Tony Hawk skate park installed in our teeny tiny little town a couple years ago, and, I gotta say, it warms my heart to see all the kids I see out there all summer long. It's been a HUGE thing for the kids in our town, and, we're all super appreciative of it.
As always, Jason just seems like a top-tier human as well as a legend. He has such respect and reverence for skateboarding and the greats who pioneered the sport, despite being a pioneer in his own right.
Lee talking about a Gons pavin the way to skaters, Guy Mariano's talent from God, Koston's Switch 3 flip a piramid in 93', Kareem's switch shuvits. This is an amazing podcast!
@infoslinger Sure, we know and props to him for it's talento but no matter who's the first, cause Rodney's earlier and very tech. The Gons is whom Jason mentioned about 10 times in this interview about how he is the most crazy, talented, charimastic , Willy Wonka of Skateboarding in it's own words.
Never have I heard Crob / Kelly / Jeron talk so much and everyone interrupting and being so insanely excited. Jason Lee has them frazzled and rightfully so, fucking epic. Been looking forward to this one for a looooooooong time. Good stuff gentleman.
They touch on the insane progression of street skating between 1986 and 1991 at about an hour into the interview. I started skating right around '86, and witnessing the progression of street skating in those five years was really amazing. When you watch footage from a street contest from 1985 compared to what skaters like Lee, Gonz and Natas were doing in contests in 1988 is just nuts. There should be a full-length documentary about this era. The story here that Lee tells about Gonz driving to his house to see the 360 flip is so great. A full documentary filled with little stories like this would be killer.
Epic episode with Jason Lee! I love hearing all the OG skateboarding stories. Amazing job! Please get more OG’s on like Natas, Gonz, Blender, Stranger, Barbee, Hensley on the show.
My uncle was an executive producer on My Name is Earl. I loved watching the show every thursday night with my whole family and waiting to see my unlcles name in the credits. I even got an autographed stereo skateboard from Jason as a gift, plus t shirts and stickers.
This is 1000% the most feel good inspiring thing that I’ve seen since the pandemic + my midlife crisis + finally processing childhood abuse and trauma in therapy the past year and a half. And now I just wanna make art again and keep being my sweet ass weirdo self, and skate more.
This is the most legendary episode for me.jason lee,Lee, Ed Templeton, and mike v.are a few of the top reasons I got into skateboarding in the first place...been at it for twelve years solid now and hopefully many more to come
What an absolute legend, the 80s/early 90s guests are my favorites. Entertaining as hell, and amazing to see how humble Jason is after decades in Hollywood. Need to get Gonz and Templeton soon!
I seriously can’t believe this one finally happened. So grateful to the Nine Club and J Lee for stepping up. Has to be the most requested guest besides Gonz. Speaking of, I like how this low key turned into a Gonz and Julian Stranger tribute episode. The J Lee Chomeball interview was epic, but it’s amazing to actually hear these stories from the legend’s mouth. My favorite skater of all time. Team One Foot, fuck “Ollie North.”
Man. The thing that stoked me out more than the interview? The comments! All the positivity coming from the skate community. It's difficult not to see skating as a superior art form and life style than most others sometimes reading comments like these. Four wheels. Trucks and a piece of wood did all this, all over the world for so long. Blows my shitting mind. :)
I love how you have so many hosts but no one talks over the guest when they shouldn't and then when they do talk it is so relevant to what the guest is saying it just makes sense. One of the best podcasts I have listened to.
Being a skater from the late 80's and 90's, this interview really resonated with me. Jason Lee is one of the most down to Earth people out there, and hearing him talk about his experiences, and genuine love for skateboarding, was nothing short of awesome.
This was my favorite. Amazing, deep history and great energy. I skated as a kid (1988-1992) and didn't skate again until I was 42, last year. It's been transformational. Once a skater...
How did it feel to get back into it? Is it harder now that you’re 42? Ill be 40 this year, and would love to give it a go. I haven’t even touched a skateboard in 20 years.
@@Podcastforthewin It's been amazing, and I'm absolutely hooked. I was actually surprised at how much muscle memory there still was after so much time. I'm slightly better now, after a year, then I was back then. But I feel like an absolute beginner, given how far skateboarding has come in 30 years.
Same i stopped around 91 or 92 started back a couple of months ago at 45, and it has been brutal, no lie. The first day i fell twice and jammed my shoulder up for about a month, it got better. Then i twisted my knee, but i ain't giving in, man!
One of the best episodes, hands down. His level of enthusiasm for skating and skaters is super rad to hear. This just had me smiling for 3.5 hours. You can tell Chris was extra hyped to have him there too. Well done Nine Club!
Not a skateboarder and first time watching/listening to The Nine Club, but had to watch because of Jason Lee, love the guy. This episode made me love the guy even more, and such a cool show. Love the chilled vibe, and makes me want to pick up a skateboard to just chill and get around on. Keep up the great work!
I love that JL says once a Skater always a Skater. I've been Skateboarder my whole life. I got Covid19 in August and then it triggered Rematiod Arthritis. I'm still hoping to get back on board. It's been really hard not to ride daily. I turn 50 this April.
Keep active..you got to get the toxins out. Everyone should know the importance of circulation. Stretching's tough but very beneficial. You'll be back your a sk8er at 50 years of age...I have to believe in you!
Watched him on my name is earl and then my skater friends introduced me to his skate parts. Earl Hickey doing a tre-flip blew my mind and ive been in love with his career ever since.
Jason's the kind of legend that resonates over and over - for many, the skater, for others the guy from Mallrats and even others, Earl Hickey. Iconic in every role. So stoked you guys finally landed this one, that'll save a lot of "We've tried to get him!" messages :D
Best tre flips ever. I modeled my tre flips after Jason Lee. I started skating Airwalks after I discovered Jason and started skating. Amazing style. Dude is a legend. One of my favorite episodes so far.
Wow, completely enjoyed this as Jason Lee was one of my favorites in the early 90's. I had the privilege of skating with Jason Lee, Rodney Mullen, Ron Chatman and Randy Colvin when they did a tour back in 90' (I believe) at a local skate shop in Kenosha Wisconsin and then we hit downtown afterward. I'll never forget that. Such good memories..
It's the pros over 40 that are bringing the funness to skating right now. I'm waiting for the 40 plus guys to form a team and just kill it. Think about who's over 40 and imagine a full length video of fun slappy street skating with realistic lands and tricks. it would be more inspiring than anything out for years.
@@AlexG1020 Chico Brenes has more style today than he did at his EMB prime youth. You don't need to know more than 3 tricks... just do them with style.
No small feat for Skateboarding. Jason lee. The Nine Club. So Much history here. It's so awesome you got this man on your show. So many dots connected. Respect to board-riders the world over.
This is exactly why I watch . Me being sort of newer generation of skateboarding I wouldn’t of known this dude but you guys shed light on the OGs that shaped skateboarding into what it is now gotta respect it !
Epic, just epic. So nice to remember the old days, when Matt Hensley and Jason Lee were our greatest inspirations, streetskating in Germany. So good that we had those great times! I just texted my old skate buddy that I haven't spoken to for years to give him virtual high-five for us having such great times back then. Thanks for the interview!
i love that universal experience :’) so lovely to be handed a piece of wood that unlocks a whole community and piece of your identity that never really goes away. i’m super proud to say i’ve gifted each of my brothers a skateboard and it’s so nice watching them progress and just have this universal passed down experience it’s so special
One of the absolute legends of skateboarding who went on to be successful in so many different disciplines. His part in the Blind video will forever be epic! Thanks so much for this 🙏 much love from Japan ❤️
Jason Lee has always seemed like a real cool, down to earth guy but this really solidified that opinion in my mind. Absolutely love to see him talk about just skating.
Sooo glad that I spent the time with this. Just a super cool laid back chat about the great times. I turn 50 this year but skating has been a huge part of life since I was around 8 or 9 - I don’t get to ride as much these days but even a cruise and a few gentle pops brings the smile. I’m sure I had a few posters of Jason from old editions of Read and Destroy magazine or copies of Thrasher that we used to get when record stores used them to protect the vinyl during import into the UK. You can’t sit through this without getting the biggest smile on your face and just radiating from stoke. Great work guys
Amazing episode. I love everything about the Nine club. Almost Famous is one of my favorite movies of all time. I think Jason hit the nail on the head. Once a skater always a skater. I haven't been on a board in 23 years but, still love that time in my life and respect the hell outta skateboarding in all of it's facets. The end of the episode struck a cord with me. I bought my first skateboard at Stratosphere Skate Shop in Little 5 back in 94'. It was a Stereo deck with Venture trucks. It was eye opening for a teenager coming down from the Burbs. A few years later we'd skate downtown ATL Bellsouth, Marta stations, Federal building, 40 yd etc. Truly a magical time in my life. Great to the see the spirit of skateboarding alive and better than ever. I still can't look at things and not think about skating them even after all these years. I have a skateboarders mindset in life and it's bleed over into my current passion of fly fishing. Keep em coming boys.
With the popularity of online petitions these days actually gaining some traction for things, can we get one going for a finale for My Name is Earl? I think we all deserve, as well as Jason himself! Thank you guys for this, and thank you Jason for all of the fond memories and inspiration with your career. Legendary!
Been hoping and waiting for this one for ages. As a kid born in the 80`s Jason was one of those "I wish I was like this dude" types, one night growing up I was watching TV late at night and stumbled upon the first Clerks movie and I instantly fell in love with the humor and all the references to things I loved (Star wars, movies and comics) and I started chasing down more more Kevin Smith flix, when I finally found Mall rats some time later and found my fav skater having a role in that movie I was shocked, been such a joy following Jason since the 90`s going from skating to movie,TV roles, voice acting, games and photography. The amount of influence Jason has had in me and my friends life is outrageous. Thank you Jason, for being an inspiration to me and countless people out there that have loved any of the many careers you`ve flourished in throughout the years.
My first pair of real skate shoes were the air walk jason lee pro model. I have Been waiting for this since the nine club started ! A truly Incredible notification to receive. Thank you skateboarding ! Thank you nine club ! And thank you Jason lee
In 1999, I got to skate with Mark Gonzales one night in SF. I was doing switch kick flips pretty good. Mark says "How do you do those that good?' I told him that I learned them from him.
Just hearing Jason lee mention Mullen and give him props to all the tricks is amazing. Makes me love being a skateboarder even more just to hear the history and these guys being my idols.
MAN...from a kid growing up in South Central this guy was my hero late 80s early 90s now 47 just tears of joy ..thank you ..and i still skate! Once a skater allllllways will be Cheers Fallas!!!!
This was so freaking amazing! Thank you guys. I grew up skaitng in the late 80's through the 90's and every story you guys covered felt like part of my world. Just perfect. I just about freaked out when Jason Lee fanned out on Matt Hensley. These two (along w/ Guy) were my idols. This comment will never do justice to how happy this episode made me. 😁
i grew up skateboarding around 2002 but i watched all the old skateboard videos so to get episodes like this is always the best i love the history of skateboarding and jason lee filled my brain with even more info the gonz storys was the best.
man that was amazing getting to hear first hand about video days... My buddy told me about video days when i was a kid and it changed my life. Jason lee continues to inspire me
Jason Lee is a cool guy & down to earth. Awesome when actors are cool like this & just one of the boys! Really enjoyable interview when dudes are chill like this!
"A Visual Sound" was one of the three skate videos (on VHS) I had back in the day. I was a poor kid, so I just watched the same three videos over and over! I still revisit that video at least once a year, and it still hits just as hard every time 💚
@@fugazi32 I live in a small town that only had a skate shop for about a year too, that made it hard to get them. I only had A Visual Sound, Label Kills, and some funky complication I haven't been able to find again that was a bunch of pro's amateur footage.
"It's hard to walk down memory lane, when you need a cane...fuck me" lmaoo so many gems. Great, great interview. You could tell Jason loved it and was in his true element.
Best interview I've ever seen in my 41 years if life! I started skating in high school at the age of 15 in 1995, and I loved every minute of it! I skated for 6 years and THIS interview hit me with so much nostalgia. What I wouldn't give to be able to talk about skateboarding again with my old skate friends 🥲. Also, Jason Lee is a champ! I've never seen an entire interview in which a person would be so kind in his admiration and respect for his friends. Truly a humble and great guy! You could see and feel the emotion when he spoke of them.
What an amazing episode. One of my favorite skaters of all time. You can tell he’s a true skater for the love of skating. Sounds like a dude who was never sponsored. Thanks guys !!!
Nailed it with the "it feels like Vegas in here." Fabulous interview. Jason Lee needs to push for a remake of some Chevy Chase movies; he looks so similar!
He doesn’t mention his Rob Maggie days and being on Illusion Skateboards with Ron Chatman. He was doing 360 kick flips at ASU. And I was doing Ollie flip 50/50 grinds. Jason was cool and said what’s up? I like that trick your doing. I said busy one of those 360 flips to fifty fifty. He did it. It wasn’t 50/50 and sketch AF. But he get a grind out of it. He was cool AF. We skated in contests together a lot. I was good friends with Randy Colvin. So that got me in with the whole world blind team. What a fucking awesome experience in 88-91 skating with those guys. Ron was my favorite. Him and Jason were fucking out the chain Hillarious to hang and skate with.
Thank you for this interview. It's so crazy--my daughters know him as the voice of Syndrome in "The Incredibles"--I still think of him as the dude who pioneered one of first known kickflip back tailslides on video. Absolute legend.
Skateboarding saved my life! I l like the fact that skaters love each other no matter what backgrounds we come from. Just purely the connection through skateboarding. Not like my occupation now where they could care less who I am outside of work. Skate boarders want to know and help each other no matter what we are going through.

Lee talking about a
Gons pavin the way to skaters, Guy Mariano's talent from God, Koston's Switch 3 flip a piramid in 93', Kareem's switch shuvits. This is an amazing podcast!

@@capo_di_capi True! Lee has style, tech and vert with style of course!
"It's own words: THE GONS" lol
Never have I heard Crob / Kelly / Jeron talk so much and everyone interrupting and being so insanely excited. Jason Lee has them frazzled and rightfully so, fucking epic. Been looking forward to this one for a looooooooong time. Good stuff gentleman.

He transitioned to film acting, but you can tell his heart was always with skateboarding. He remembers this stuff like it was yesterday.
No he doesn’t.
Jason Lee - "Imagine meeting a person of that caliber"
Chris - "totally"
Chris' Face - "I'm doing that right now"
My uncle was an executive producer on My Name is Earl.
Never stop being weird.

What an absolute legend, the 80s/early 90s guests are my favorites. Entertaining as hell, and amazing to see how humble Jason is after decades in Hollywood. Need to get Gonz and Templeton soon!
Templeton would probably do it. I highly doubt gonz would. He’s a bit of a strange cat.
Gonz is really off his rockers. I doubt he would do it and if he did I don't think you'd get much out of him. Not like Jason here.
Mark probably wouldn't be able sit still enough for it, but Templeton would be an amazing guest! I'm still waiting for a Kareem interview tho
@@From96TilDeath Kareem would be sick.
Remember the poster of him with the one foot over the hydrant ?

And bearings and bolts. Can't forget those fellas.
This is what skateboarding is all about. One of the best episodes. Love Jason Lee and his genuine youthful spirit.

It was so dope to see. I've never seen him really talk about skateboarding in depth. It was so cool, you could tell he was so excited to be there.

Jason's the kind of legend that resonates over and over - for many, the skater, for others the guy from Mallrats and even others, Earl Hickey. Iconic in every role.
So stoked you guys finally landed this one, that'll save a lot of "We've tried to get him!" messages :D
One of my heroes. Best tre flip there ever was. Love jason
I came here to say the same thing. Top 5 3 flips ever imo.
Yes, he literally made the 3 flip popular. All around legend
It's actually kinda wild that he only does one or two of them in Video Days; there's one in the intro and (I think) one in his actual part.
