I think between the Takeshita excursion to wrestle dynasty he was never given boundaries. Seems like he was set up to fall. I think the Gabe vs Omega stuff commentary was ok but beyond that ? NJPW seems to have set him up here.

If we’re all guessing what he said that was wrong, it could have been the mere mention of Okada. There was a time that Omega was not to be mentioned, currently Kota is not to be mentioned. I imagine Okada is in this category now. Perhaps it had nothing to do with TK.

I kinda feel the Charlton commentary gets misrepresented here. You guys make it sound like all his AEW bashing was in service to the Gabe Kidd storyline, which I don’t see. Charlton was taking AEW and TK to task in most of the matches with AEW guy in there. It felt like this was more Charlton with the ax to grind, not just reporting on what Gabe said.
Also is there a good chance Charlton wasn’t told to not rip apart AEW and TK? Maybe… but I also feel it’s also kinda obvious to not do that lol Does a NJPW rep really need to go out there and tell him “Also, don’t relentlessly rip apart the guy and company we do business with on a regular basis in America”?
Personally I feel this is all part of an angle. I feel they turning this AEW vs NJPW rivalry into an angle. And to sell this, ya need the commentary teams for this as they are the voices for the company. I didn’t have an issue at all with Schiavone’s reaction as it makes perfect sense in context to the story. I even liked Charlton’s attacks on AEW as it showed his pride as a NJPW guy. He’ll be back in 2 months, hinting this was done by AEW and it’ll continue to build up towards Forbidden Door. He was ripping them apart the whole show, I think they would have called him off commentary if they thought it was that bad.
That being said, if this isn’t an angle, and it’s just Charlton decided that on the first joint show with AEW in Japan that it was a great idea to rip into AEW and Tony Khan for the whole show; I think a 2 month suspension from commentary is pretty fair.

I 110% bet NJPW gave Chris ZERO guidelines and rules on what he can or can't say, so he's basically getting punished trying to do their job for them, pushing the story Gabe Kidd started. I do agree with John. It felt a bit off, and unlike him, it took away from the match slightly, but it was nothing punishable. The only reason this would be a fair punishment is if Tony Khan got sensitive again and told NJPW to do something about it, but if the reports are true, then that's not the case. NJPW is probably in such a craphole as a business they felt this action would help appease Tony so he could still help them out, still jumping to this action before any consequences happened from AEWs side.

New Japan co-promote events with AEW, and borrows AEW-signed talent. Burying AEW in the manner he did lowers the value of those co-promoted events and talent appearances. It's bad for business. It's especially bad given New Japan not only put over multiple AEW talent on that show, but just put two of their titles on them. Charlton probably shouldn't be calling others any sort of "mark" if he couldn't figure that much out.
I also suspect there is another aggravating factor in that they tried to calm the guy down on commentary via Rocky Romero, and he still wouldn't pull his head in.

If you can't see the difference between a company taking a partner's pre-taped promo against their product and willfully airing it on their airwaves, and Chris Charlton being a complete homer while a key liaison for the event was sitting next to him on commentary asked him at least twice to reel in the tribalism, then I don't know what to tell you. I don't think Chris should be punished harshly for what he did, because at the end of the day it all boils down to him trying to make the show interesting and NJPW really neglecting English commentary until feathers are ruffled and they're forced to do something. Quality control and a lack of production notes is not a new phenomenon for that table. This is the same company that put JR and Barnett in a recording booth and made them record commentary for weeks of NJPW on AXS until they absolutely quit caring, allowed Charlton and Kelly on past partnered events talk crap about other company's talents and booking, and then let Kevin Kelly do play-by-play with a vegetable at one point during his last tour. There is a severe lack of communication between the English commentary table and New Japan.
