I have the same model. Thanks Bob Schick for the advice about lowering the centerboard a bit when motoring. Mine lets the wind take the bow away all the time as well. I have to maneuver in reverse if there is any wind. Next time that happens, I hope I remember your advice about lowering the centerboard just a bit. Glad you mentioned this!

Putting some board down would have helped a whole lot with maneuvering. You don't even have to drop the centerboard all the way if you are worried about shallow water. The the centerboard down and at least one rudder will make the 26X handle very well.

This is a 26X and certainly does have a retractable keel along with the water ballast guys. He needs to put it down half-way when at the dock and will give you more control. That was scary shit at the beginning. 😂

Had you filled the ballast tank? I find my 26X handles much better under power with it empty... able to turn on a dime.

No surprise..super lightweight boat, tons of windage, probably not much displacement below water to grab. Soon as you backed off the support of the dock the boat weathervaned downwind. You figured it out and did the right thing backing up into the wind..a very stable position..and when in the clear use engines power to push yourself around. If you had the room, which you did not here, could try having crew (your son) hold a bow line looped around a cleat so you can reverse (to port in this case) until your bow is exactly 90 degrees perpendicular into the wind, power up in reverse while having him release the line so you can back off stably directly into the wind until you are clear, to make the turn BUT, You might end up blown smashing right back into the dock if it doesn't go smoothly or your son might fall overboard if he can't release the line. Frankly I think you did the right thing just sliding off the dock and then have plenty of room and time to get turned around. As another said, put the centerboard down even a foot..maybe the rudders. Idiosyncrasy of that boat. Optional too, swing the boat to the other side of the dock with the lines before motoring off - probably a smart thing to do. You'd be blown right off bow forward. Monday morning quarterback..Live and learn.. Don't mind the stupid comments - they don't know what they're talking about. Glad you posted this..food for thought and learning through your trouble..
