      African American does not hold up. Factually, not accurate. Why? Africa, like Asia is a big continent with diverse cultures. Moreover, not everyone from Africa is black. Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco are all African countries but they're also Arab countries. If you insist on being PC then technically, people from these countries who come to the United States are African American. And what about a white person from South Africa who moves to America? Technically, he's also an African American.

    As half Japanese and Chinese, the only reason why most Asian people good at math is just because the education system is quite fucked up in China due to the enormous population. With too many competitors, we have to learn AT LEAST NINE subjects back in high school and have to get it all A to get a DECENT college. Which means we were forced to study even when we were only 4 years old. So is actually a tragedy cuz most parents care about the grade more than their children's health. I was so lucky that my parents actually cared about me and sent me to London for high school and Japan later. Right now, I worked in London and never been this happy before.

      It was also primarily Japanese that were put into the internment camps because Japan was much more likely to invade the United States. Japan had already attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor whereas Germany and Italy were unlikely to invade the United States as they were still dealing with Great Britain and the Soviet Union. The United States didn't want Japanese-Americans to help Japan invade the United States through espionage or sabotage. This is why Japanese-Americans living near the West Coast were interned while Japanese-Americans in other parts of the US were for the most part left alone. Americans of German and Italian origin were seen as less of a threat as there was no concern that the United States would be invaded by Germany or Italy. So, in conclusion, the fact that they were treated better than Japanese-Americans wasn't because they were white.

    Many people there were ethnic Germans that migrated WITH the English during the American Independence (most from Hanover to avoid british influence)
    And many people had german relatives
    Also, during the 19th century America and the newly formed german state had adored each other, with many germans studying the art of war of the civil war (like general moltke) to help them unify germany
    Edit: Whereas the japanese were kicked out because for more than a century, the japanese, and in general east asia, had a quirky relationship with the US... mainly because they busted Japan's economy one century earlier

    They actually did put Germans in internment camps!
    It isn't as widely known as Japanese internment camps, but they existed during both World Wars and Italians were also put into camps (My family isn't Italian so I don't know as much about those). This wasn't just German nationals but people of recent German descent, they would have their homes and property seized by the government just the same as the Japanese population.
    The Germans weren't handled as agressively, being put on a case by case basis, but it didn't take much to qualify for internment. Many families abandonned German language and heritage, and even changed their names to be more "American" in order to seem as inconspicuous as possible.
    While technically only the person under suspicion had to be detained, families could choose to come along. This left many with the choice of splitting up their family and forcing the women and children to live without their main breadwinner outside the camp, or bringing their children into the camp which wasn't ideal. A lot of children ended up in orphanages because their parents were taken in.
    Those not detained could have their movements restricted, be banned from certain areas or could be put under curfews that their nongerman neighbors weren't subject to.
    No, it's not as bad, but that doesn't mean it should be erased. Admiting that the United States treated its white citizens terribly too doesn't minimize the suffering of minorities, it just lays out history as it actually happened.

Clever racist organizations don't reveal their blind hatred for everyone, but instead apply different standards to different races as a disguise. This is a tactic designed to keep the victims of racism, and their allies, fighting amongst themselves instead of effectively uniting against the injustices.

    I thought the stereotype originated due to many individuals of east Asian ethnicity originating from collectivist cultures where a lot of pressure is put on young people to succeed. Like the Suneung test in south Korea. It certainly seams that way at my uni, they often work harder and achieve more because they are more afraid of failure and disappointing their family (a double edged sword of course with depression anxiety etc).

    • @HiHi-iu8gf
      @HiHi-iu8gf 5 лет назад +9

      I think that has a part in it too. A lot of asian cultures put a lot more pressure in excelling academically and shit. Quite a few east asian countries have higher suicide rates in students because of the effects of overworking and sleep deprivation on mental health, as well as the pressure and stress of having to succeed.
      I have quite a few asian friends who won't accept anything less than an A in almost everything at school (which kinda sucks for me since our school uses bellcurve marking lol, and I'm asian too. My family isn't *as* pressuring as my aforementioned friends' families, but they certainly do hold me to quite a high standard)

      @Viper 47 I mean maybe not "dishonouring", per say, but there definitely is a lot of pressure to not disappoint your family's high standards - at least from my own experience and that of most of my other asian friends - especially those who came over from their respective countries later on.

    • @funkytikigod7039
      @funkytikigod7039 5 лет назад +5

      @Viper 47 I would be hesitant to rule out the role of collectivism, it could be argued that such values are reinforced by the very real demands of how their societies are structured. A family may put pressure on their child with the hope they will succeed in such a competitive environment, therefore the individual may be imbued with a fear they aren't good enough both for society and their family. I also wouldn't say the majority of a population need to commit suicide before you get concerned. Japan and particularly south Korea are very high, particularly if you exclude various 3rd world countries. I'm surprised china isn't that high anymore but maybe Xi fiddles it.

      As a Korean-American; my experience with the "Model Minority" stereotype is... well, just like all stereotypes, it's rooted in some interpretation of reality. Frankly even if it started off as a propaganda claim by the US gov't, it's one that they got coincidentally right, because it's still the truth that Asians (South, East, or otherwise) make way more money than Whites, have a higher education rate than Whites, have higher SAT, etc, scores than Whites, etc...
      That said, I don't like the stereotype because-among other things-it then implies that other nonasian minorities AREN'T "model", and that undoubtedly has all kinds of self-image issues for them. Although I love how it ended with a "don't generalize my race" message but that doesn't just go for people with different Asian backgrounds. It goes for people with African backgrounds too. Sure, I understand that most "African-Americans" were brought into the U.S through slavery and don't necessarily know which African country their from. But for those who do know their history, like me, it kind of sucks being generalized when my parents are from two opposite sides of Africa.
    ...
    That's all I have to say. I started ranting

    • @datheamore6395
      @datheamore6395 4 года назад +3

      I don't like being generalized as white either. Everyone assumes that we all had slaves when many of us had ancestors who immigrated here long after slavery was "abolished" in America and were sometimes even treated like a scourge. My mother's side was Scotch-Irish, and my father's side was Ukrainian. If you despised the British Imperialism... they used the Irish as a practice round before they honed their craft. They attempted to destroy the culture and kill the language and they even taxed the air. Many Irish were sent to the Americas as prisoners by Cromwell and were conscripted as indentured servants... they were usually bonded for a few years, but depending on the work they didn't usually live to make it out of the forced contract... it gets interchangeably referred to as slavery but it is not exactly the same as what was done to the Africans because eventually if they survived they would be free. This was before the Great Potato Famine of course. My Mother's ancestors who immigrated to America were carpetbaggers just trying to survive and maybe make enough money to marry the woman they wanted to marry. As for my father's side, they fled to escape Communist rule and were lucky enough to leave before the great hunger of the 1930s... it was a forced famine created by Stalin and it killed millions. It was referred to as Holodomor. I have no idea if there are any surviving family from the old country or if they perished. While some traditions were kept, much was lost because during the 30s, 40s, and 50s, having a culture different from the accepted Christian European culture usually made things difficult for immigrants if they didn't seem pure enough. This is why I can't speak Ukrainian at all and it is why my grandmother insisted that we were all 100% Ukrainian and all of my ancestors were Eastern Orthodox Christians (pretty sure this is impossible statistically and I have a sneaking suspicion that we might have had Jewish ancestors as well). The word slave also originates from the word "Slav." Slavic people were the one of the first groups to be enslaved by the ancient Romans... before that slaves were typically just called servants. I am not saying this to negate the oppression that black people go through in our country but rather, to share my takeaway from all of this. Here is my takeaway: because oppression and conquest often involve rape, it is likely that while I have that Irish and Ukrainian heritage, there is likely also the DNA of the English and the Ancient Roman's as well... essentially the blood of oppressed and oppressor flows within me, and somewhere in everyone's history they likely share the same painful history of power struggles. My point is that it is easy for the oppressed to become the oppressor and vice versa and it then becomes a matter whether or not we think we have to keep choosing those options or decide to break the cycle by just taking the time to love and respect ourselves and each other in healthy ways. I feel like lack of love for self creates oppressors and then the pain is projected upon others. So many try to fix others but don't take the time to heal their own bullshit and as a result, the vicious cycle continues through humanity. We as people often try to take power from others to feel better about ourselves in everyday life as individuals, why would that not happen among all peoples over centuries and millennia? I just happen to look like the oppressor right now, but I am just me. I am no more a caricature than you are. I wish that that is what people saw too instead of the generalized image of being a white person in America. These labels are destructive for everyone, and you are not alone in the feeling of being boxed by generalizations. ❤

    Before I begin, I'm an Indian-American, and I'm so glad people in the comments realize what b.s. this episode is. Just to let y'all know, the model minority theory was created in critical race theory classes to justify the" inherent racism" of the U.S. given the obvious success of Asian-Americans. Half the stuff he said has no bases in empirical data. The work ethic and culture of education in Asian families was arguably the greatest factor for the success of Asian Migrants. Just remember that the majority of Chinese immigrants came before the US started accepting high skilled migrants and the reason why they did become so successful was because of culture.
    Asian countries see some of the highest economic growth rates in the world and the highest focus on educational attainment, maybe even to a fault. Indian, Chinese, and Korean students spend so much time in schools and even go to night schools as a supplement cause that's how the culture is. Another contributor is the focus on S.T.E.M. in Asian families and countries that have allowed them to get higher paying jobs while the rest of America finds stem boring. We even have a shortage of S.T.E.M. workers now; this is a cultural issue not a racist or governmental one.
    And to the point that Asian-American who struggle in school have less help from eduators, I have yet to find evidence for that but maybe I'm wrong (If someone finds something about this, leave it in the reply). Obviously, stereotypes are wrong, but I highly doubt struggling Asian students are just left behind because of their race.
    You can argue that the government has more of a role to fund schools in low-income communities and to try to solve poverty but just know that this video is half-assed and just plain wrong in half of its analysis.

The socio-economic, racial, and cultural differences in Asia change every few miles, especially in the Indian Subcontinent, so, calling an Asian "Asian" means that a Russo-American, a Filipino-American and an Indian-American will be categorized under a single category in spite of their various differences, so this system is absolute bs and needs to stop.

    I'd rather be stereotyped being a "model minority" than being a criminal.

    It also hurts Asians by undermining the validity of their complaints against racism. It’s basically saying “all the racism you experience doesn’t exist because you’re a model minority.” This drives a wedge between Asians and Black Americans.

      I mean it's not so much that, but they are on a high pedestal. It's just that the government had nothing to do with successful ones. Look at college percentages in asian populated states sometimes.
