    Good job. We graduated one from our homeschool and he went to a 4 college with no problems. He's married and working, goes fast. Our middle guy is a highschool Jr this year and everything you laid out is great. I paired World History with World Literature, American History with American Literature etc. Our youngest is in 6th grade and we've been homeschooling for 13 years and will continue, Lord willing until our youngest guy graduates. Enjoy the JOURNEY🙏

    As soon as I pushed play on this video I started crying!!! I’m crying writing this!!! So proud of you, Ashley! Your daughter seems like such a wonderful young woman, and each of your kiddos are incredibly lucky to have you! Praying for peace, and so much grace for you! “Started from the bottom now you’re HERE!!!” ❤️😭

    You’re doing great! I would suggest in your planning to also check local colleges or the college that she’s interested in for entry requirements as well just to be sure they aren’t different. I have found that ours here in SC are more stringent than public school graduation requirements. For instance instead of 4 years of English, they specified that 1 credit each of American and British literature must be included. I used TG&TB language arts but was able to select additional novels to tailor her 10th and 11th grade years for those credits.

    I am still so shocked by the differences in graduation requirements state to state. We live in Connecticut and there really are almost so specifics for homeschooling, so I looked to our local district/state level high school graduation requirements. For my daughter who is in 9th grade this year, she needs 4 English credits, 3 social studies credits, 1 world language, 1 humanities with .5 being in fine arts and .5 in electives, 4 math, 3 science, 2 STEM electives, 1 PE, 1 health and safety, .5 personal finance, 3.5 any additional electives, 1 mastery based capstone project. When you compare that to other states there is a drastic difference. How do these kids compare when applying to college or does none of that matter and if so then why do we push so hard? Makes my head spin. So thankful to homeschool!

    FYI, for people reading this. Most states have different graduation requirements for homeschoolers. In Texas, we have none. It's up to the parents to do what you think is best. Texas state colleges mostly care about SAT/ACT scores. You could choose to follow what the public school kids do if you want, but it isn't required in Texas.

    • @GraceandGrit
      @GraceandGrit  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for sharing for Texas. At the beginning I stated this is how I’m planning based off of my state as a baseline starting point.

    • @Mtripp27
      @Mtripp27 3 года назад

      @@GraceandGrit, your state doesn't have any homeschool graduation requirements either. You listed the public school graduation requirements. Which is fine if you want to follow it, but it isn't required like it is in public school.

    This is a great video! My oldest is in 8th grade, and I’ve had our high school plans in my mind for awhile.
    Some additional tips: in some states, your student can start taking credit for classes as early as 7th grade. This will help space out some of the subjects.
    Also, I recommend checking out different colleges to get an idea of what their minimum requirements are to be admitted. Some states minimum requirements for high school graduation might not meet the minimum for colleges.
    Finally, a problem my sister encountered with her oldest when he was in high school: double check with the colleges what specific subjects qualify. He had taken physical science in his freshman year according to his boxed curriculum course of study. Unfortunately, our state university did not recognize this as a qualifying credit for science, so he had to double up one year in order to meet the university’s requirement.
    Good luck! It seems like a great plan so far!

    • @tinaallcott9836
      @tinaallcott9836 3 года назад

      Yes love this comment. In our state you choose when you graduate your child with what credits.. but I will still be using the state standards as a template but we don't have to follow it. I plan on looking what colleges require since they are all different! If my son chooses to go to college. ❤

    I sometimes feel bad bc our oldest is the ginny pig for everything 😅. I appreciate you sharing your journey with us so we can use yours as the ginny pig. I say this with love 😂. God bless your family, the best part about all of this is knowing you're guided by God. That takes away all my worry. Sadly though I had my 2 oldest in public school for a few years and I missed out on some things. My oldest son is still catching up bc when I took him out he was 3 years behind and at his reading level. He was reading at a kindergarten level in 2nd grade. So glad I caught it before he got too far in his education. We're gradually getting him on track. He loves to read now. 🙌🏽 Homeschooling and TGTB is such a blessing.

    I'm so impressed with your way of home schooling. I have seen so many home schooling vlogs & I worry about them. They don't seem to take schooling all that serious. If the mothers don't want to do it that day they just take off & go to the park. Kids are just playing around. I have not heard one mother say they checked with their state to see what is needed to graduate. Are there any qualifications the parents need to home school? There is really nothing wrong with public schools. My granddaughter went to public school & she gradutated from college with a master degree as space engineer.

    Such a good idea to schedule in ACT practice. My husband tutored kids for the SAT/ACT before he went to Chiropractic school a little over a year ago. He only missed one question on the SAT, but he went to a prep school, and they started studying for the SAT in middle school. (And he's Asian, so there's that too 😂) But we decided to have our daughter begin casually studying last year (6th grade). She studied about 20 min twice a week. She decided that she wanted to take a forensic science class at Johns Hopkins, so she took the ACT at the end of the year. She did well and was accepted into the CTY program. But really, so much of the test is...learning the test and time management. My daughter did well because she knew how to take the test. I honestly think standardized tests are stupid 😂, but educationally, we see it as an opportunity for 💰💰💰. Studying regularly and early can earn thousands of dollars in scholarships. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    It would be so much easier to plan high school if we could peek into the future and see what they want to do in 4 years. My oldest is in 9th grade. Since our state graduation standards are low and have some weird requirements I looked at what our state university and local Christian university require of incoming freshmen and based my plan off of that. My 2nd oldest will be a freshman next year. Since he plans to spend his last 2 years of high school in a vocational school (veterinary technician) which will be elective credits we are counting a couple of his 8th grade classes (Biology and Algebra I) on his high school transcript. Also after this year we are definitely changing some of our curriculum choices. I will say that the amount of time high school courses take has surprised me. Especially since we only school 4 days a week. I will not give up our co-op day. It is very important for our whole family to have that one day a week of normal social interaction. And while his classes are not anything I feel I can include on his transcript (maybe elective but only 28 hours a year so idk) he is still learning.

    Congrats on getting to high school!! Can't wait! I have a 3rd/5th grader. Pen/paper girl here too! All the way! Were your schools graduation requirements hard to find?

    My son will be starting his 9th grade year as well. I am feeling somewhat sure of most curriculum choices but a couple I am still out on. One being science. We have done some BJU in the past too. Curious if you have looked at Shormann science courses? I enjoy all the videos and I look forward to learning alongside as we plan and navigate high school. P.S. I get very weepy too!!

      My sons uses Shormann Math (8th and 10th) and LOVE it so I would assume the science is just as good. I can also recommend Apologia sciences. They offer online classes, which are very rigorous, yet so very good.

    I have a question on tgatb. Do you notice over time if they start writing openers in their journeys themselves without the books help? Is this program mastery or spiral?

    I would like to quickly throw out there that TGTB high school Language Arts curriculum includes credits for Art and geography if doing all of their high school levels

    Are you registered with your state or through an umbrella ( asking because our state doesn't make up the transcript and requires testing ...while the umbrella will do that for us )

    We are also planning high school. My 8th grader is actually already taking some high school classes and it blows my mind he is already at this point.
