This is a must watch for anyone who is picking up one of these. It's great to hear the highlights but even more important to know what mechanical issues to watch out for. On earlier models we preferred the Walker Evan shocks over the dynamics.. But more they don't have rebound adjustment. Great overview guys.
Absolutely love the thought of owning a 225 hp side by side. The thing with new machines is there are always the first year issues that get solved in the long run. Thanks for the great content.
I love the 4 cylinder! And with it having so much cooking, that tells me Polaris is already planning and or testing turbos or other power adders. The thing about “too much power” is it’s better to have it if you someday need it. If you don’t need all the power then control your right foot!
I have a Pro XP and have always wanted more low end torque. This totally addresses that! It's big, it's wide, it's expensive, and it should be!! Polaris keeps raising the bar.
I really like the concept of the 4cyl engine especially if it adds to reliability and longevity. This is a super impressive machine. Thanks for the videos!
If you can control yourself with the power than this machine will be great. I think for those in Utah and similar areas will grab these machines. People need to have the right riding area's to fully enjoy a machine like this. This is not for the typical trail riding experience in the mountains. This is a beast for open sand rides, Rock crawling, and tracks. Nice to see a change in the industry and offers for different tastes. Great coverage on the machine. I like hearing all the good and potential bad.
I love the thought of the inline 4 cylinder I wish they would have made a automatic transmission to match the power but I understand there has to be a weak point. The real question is when are they going to come out with a turbo version or a super charger for this ride
I think it's great. We now have a variety of different motor types that can be fit to different types of riding. We have mild twins and dune ripping 3 and 4 cylinders. Of all varieties.
I think polaris nailed it with the Pro r. I appreciate your show and input I'm in the process of deciding what side by side I'm getting and I trust your reviews. Thank you
To comment on the power levels & engine size, Having a full range in the line up is important. I think having a larger N/A engine in a great idea. I have always been in favor of larger engines as they don't have to work as hard to get the same results as a smaller engine. I can see where it may cause some issues with inexperienced drivers getting into trouble. While the owner would ultimately be responsible, having a lower powered key would help with some drivers (Hellcat & Demon comes to mind).
Well done! Your review lets us know what to look forward to as well as what to watch out for. My comment about the power is this...for a 79 year old dude that drives a C7 Z06 Corvette, the power is wonderful!
I love the power and everything about this rig! I remember when Kawasaki came out with the Prairie 650 and everyone lost their mind “2 cylinder?”, “50hp stock are you crazy?”… now look where we are in off-roading.
I think Polaris is the only off-road company really pushing the limits and offering machines that blow peoples minds. Can-am is close but the X3 hasn’t changed dramatically in years. 225hp seems like a lot for a sxs, but for a machine built as beefy as the Pro R and has the safety features that it has, then more HP the better. Love the progression of these and can’t wait to see what the future brings
I believe that the power plant is actually an improvement by being naturally aspirated and reorienting the clutches to provide better cooling and easier access if needed out on he trail. The tweaks to he throttle body for low speed use should be beneficial when encountering obstacles
Just bought the 4 door RZR Pro R Ultimate. Can't wait to take it out. Dealer is adding all the BS we bought to upgrade it. Let you know what I think after I take it out. And I Love the Bigger Motor idea....
So much development went into that exhaust for that 2L. Because it's NA and not turbo charged you get a way bigger power band so 225 is perfect. It has that high end throateness when u want it but you can also take it easy at slower speeds and not be out of control. I love that sound.
Love the execution of the new RZR build. This just seemed like a natural evolution and can’t wait to see this engine platform evolve years to come. Biggest down side I see from this is coming from certain customers. In the States there is tension building from the Offroad community with local residents at Destination locations. Moab is a perfect example of that debate, as the cars get more capable and with that the continued demand for louder more aggressive aftermarket parts, locals are getting more irritated with our community. This RZR is for a certain environment but we know that some will take these Heavier bigger side by sides and put them in applications that they are not designed for leading that Excessive environmental damage further hurting our community. With that said, I also am looking forward to seeing Can Am answer to this.
I live in Minnesota and it’s the same here and Wisconsin. While I love seeing these machines they’re designed for tearing up terrain. If you’re on your own property, do what you want, but the ramrods hellbent on ripping up public property, or other peoples property are quickly ruining nice rides through the outdoors for everyone else.
To me you can never have enough power. I like to go fast as I ride in the desert and Glamis. Sand robs power. So the more the merrier. As people put so much into these things to add tons of power I believe the more power from stock is way more reliable than adding aftermarket. But just my opinion! Good video and thanks for the info.
I like the idea of having a four cylinder in a sxs, with that said I have never drove one bigger than a 700 cc twin cylinder 50 inch. As long as you can control the skinny peddle on the right it will only be as wild or mild as you want it to be.
I have one and the power is what we needed long before. I intend to super charge mine after the extended warranty is up. As far as side by sides go, Polaris got it right
4 cylinder is the way SxS's will go bigger and better. I started on a 250 big red, went to a 300 fortrax and now many years later into a ProXP4. Evolution
Keep the power game rolling. 225hp isn't that crazy. A mild tune on a pro xp can get you that power. What I'm excited for is the pro RR , ie pro r turbo. Hoping to see 300hp. Can't wait. Keep it coming sxs manufacturers. Cheers from Kearney , Ontario. Ps, keep up the good work dirttrax.
boys that where everyone will be i'm hoping in about 2-5 year. I love it. Ive been die hard can-am ride since my first outlander 400. i had the 23 sold in Canada I'm prob going to be switching soon. cause Polaris step up!!!
We spent the money got the 4 seat pro R ultimate package, don't regret a thing. yes it drinks the gas but who cares when you hit the go pedal yahoo. We are very happy with it and it does anything we want it too. have had no issues. I suggest to make sure you do the break in period rules and maintenance, you take care of it and it takes care of you. We sand dune so far 100% - Thanks for your honest review. By the way it does get warm around the feet but we sand ride only just don't enclose the doors totally and it helps cool you off quick. peace all enjoy and ride safe. 4 cylinder Rules
Since you mentioned on a previous episode that this power plant was originally designed to be installed in a side-by-side later in life I wouldn’t doubt it if the next iteration has a DCT.. that would be so sick
@@jasonkillsformomy because rubber bands suck and keep the RPMs much higher increasing the wear on the engine and makes the ride much noisier when you’re just slowly tooling down the road. I also recall CVT’s rob more power than a geared transmission. Hondas DCT in their Talon seems to be really enjoyed just not the power…
@@Captndarty A small price to pay for something that has been proven to be reliable for decades. A DCT is not as reliable, more complex and more expensive. You can't drive a DCT the same way as a automatic or a CVT. In a car you can destroy the clutches in a DCT within a few thousand miles if you don't know what you're doing.
@@jasonkillsformomy you’re wrong. Honda has been using their DCT for half a decade in the Africa Twin. The same motor that’s in the Talon. You can smoke a belt just as easily if you don’t know what you’re doing between high and low range. You can’t compare a sports car DCt to a purpose built off-road DCT.
@@Captndarty No I'm not wrong. A DCT is not as reliable, more complex and more expensive. That is a fact. i'm all for more power. they are handle so well, i have never been "out of control" they handle and soak up everything. so if i can get more power and speed im all for it
That piece in between engine and clutch is a torque limiter. Reduced initial torque load on clutch due to increased output of the 2.0 and like you said no turbo lag and instant power.
To talk about power levels, I think it’s moving in the right direction for the SxS. Making it more aftermarket part friendly is only going to help. There is also the question how long until it’s just a sand rail or modded rock crawler in Polaris SXS shell. As well when does the regulation hammer drop on them? An put them in a different category of UTV. Great video as always
Here in Minnesota, anything over 65 inch width falls into out of the ATV2 category and into the OHV category where trucks exist. The ATV1 category goes to 50 inches wide.
I hear ya about the usable travel question. Polaris just released a video few days ago on their RUclips page describing exactly that. They used pro xp to show it.
It is a awesome machine. I have 2 rzrs now and have received great service from both. I have been waiting for DT to fo a review of this wicked new rzr. I like the natural aspirated motor. I have seen one a couple weeks ago in Tennessee on the trails and it looked great. I have been waiting for the 4 cylinder motor and look forward to test driving one. Thanks for another great video
With my RZR Pro XP I fight the heat. I think most of my heat comes from the front radiator through my tunnel. However I would never trade heat for my preforming machine. Thanks for the great review! I like the alternator. I installed a 18 inch roof fan that takes all my ele power However it cools us even in Moab Utah. Just can't run it constantly.
I think it's great to have a 4-cyl engine for certain types of riding. Nothing wrong with experimentation and having choices. For my trail riding, it's probably overkill, though once in a while I def would like more power. Plus breaking this barrier means the price will come down, eventually.
My pro r completely fell apart with less than 200 miles on it. One minute we were driving at 30 mph on a flat dirt road, the next we were stopped with a sheared main frame and broken ball joints around $17k in repairs. Very disappointed in polaris.
It's about time and I would really like to see 🙈 Yamaha put the three cylinder engine 🚂🚒 from the 1982, Yamaha 850 special in the R- max that would be a beast as well
I think this power is something everyone should get to experience. It should be the standard but with lower power modes for less experienced. I'm a thrill and adrenaline seeker though. I love drifting sideways and hauling ass
Awesome video. Long time fan of your shows. As far as the 225 hp my view is you can never have enough power. You don’t always have to use it but it’s awesome to have 😁
Love the innovation and fearlessness of Polaris pushing the envelope. Love everything about it and I’m sure they will fix all little things like the shifting. I’d definitely buy one if I could. Great in depth review. Also love how easy they made the engine to service and work on…
The power plant is awesome. More is always better unless it’s uncontrollable which won’t be the case here. If I could fit it more places I’d be looking to trade up. 👌
Love seeing the pro in real world reviews and pointing out the differences. Really hoping the 4 cylinder translates to longevity over a typical turbo high hp motor. May have missed it but is there a cvt temp gauge on these like a krx? Thanks for the info!
I love the engine on this model. I hope polaris has a 4 seater version. how can we switch out the shocks to dynamic? or is it too difficult because of the way they have the front mounts forked? ty
Safety on the trail is for the other riders as well, I've ran into a lot of folks who over drive their rzrs. Never been another machine but rzr that I catch folks over doing it on the trail. Tough to have such high power and restrict it on congested trails of the UP. Only spots we've ever had problems.
Would be nice to see the video of AJ adding the accessories. I own the same model. I have the inner door panels, windshield, and rear storage box. Thinking about adding the fender extensions. Do you have the link if that video exists?
That shift cable is an issue on my rzr too. I had to put heat tape around it to keep it from melting. I'm not really sure why the hell they ran it below the exhaust like they did. My rzr is tuned so the exhaust gets hotter than stock and was melting them cables left and right. Still a horrible place for that cable, I have heard it was an issue on the new pro r from many people.
All these people complaining about prices going up are also the same people that want manufacturers to put the newest greatest parts and tech into these machines. The amount of development going into these especially from Polaris and Can Am is no different than auto manufacturers now. If you want the newest and greatest you have to pay for that. If not then buy a lower end model at a price you can afford. From all the reviews I’ve seen that 2.0L 4 cylinder motor sounds like it’s a beast! I’m a ski doo/can am fan, don’t own a side x side yet and I want a new X3 but this thing really really has me intrigued to say the least. 225 n/a h.p. sounds flippin awesome 🔥🔥🔥 killin it Polaris
I took a rock to the inside of the wheel in my Can Am, it popped a hole into the wheel and the tire went flat. The alternator, directly taken from the Wildcat XX, same with the front suspension. I'm getting tired of suicide doors. Legroom... good. Comfy... check. Loud... not too much. Good review. Why have manufacturers kept them below 1000cc's and all of a sudden, screw it. 2000cc's. I think it's not considered a UTV (in the US) it's now a buggy. I wonder what differences there are because of that? Registration?
4 cylinder N/A still isn’t enough, I’ve driven pro R’s in Michigan trails and it really needs a turbo. With that said I think in stock form for somebody that isn’t a gear head it’s perfect. I’ve been saying forever that all SxS’s are unpowered and I meant that in two ways. Yes they were to slow but also the motor is just working to hard all the time, even just cruising. Up till now the answer for me was a yxz with a turbo due to the direct drive transmission and clutch. I will be selling it and going to the pro r, either with a turbo kit I build or if Polaris comes out with a stock turbo before I sell the yxz I’ll go that route! Great video as always! 👍👍
Hard to say if it’s to much power. However it will be something to look forward to when the others decide to join and possibly turbo a 4 cylinder like most automobile manufacturers are doing.. 🧐🧐🧐🤙
Really like the video? It was very informative and love the razor I wish I could about that 1 but I ended up buying just the XP 1000 it's an amazing vehicle. Appreciate your demo video on it. Wish that you could do one a little bit stronger. On the XP 1000 standard Pat, thank you.
I like the NA 4-Banger approach. Big horsepower without turbo lag. The torque must make it feel like it has 300+ horsepower when comparing to the two cylinder turbo. Turbo motors don’t make a lot of torque. Two more pistons and connecting rods pumping on the crankshaft, it’s gotta feel like a drag car when you get it hooked up. Maybe I’ll upgrade from my Pro Xp which makes more power than I need. It’s not about need though is it? 😎
I haven’t been able to drive one yet but all I can think about is turbo Honda civics making 1000hp…. Now what about a turbo 4 cylinder rzr!? I can see where these are heading and it’s going to be a lot of fun. 2.0L for the win 👍
I’m certainly in favor of Polaris and others continuing to push innovation and horse power to the limits. As you said, it’s not for everyone or every riding environment. The cool thing is some of the developments and technology will eventually trickle down the product lines. Think Ride Command. No such thing as too much hp as long as it is managed properly!
I am on my 2nd RZR. As far as power and engine size goes they need to stop putting bigger, more powerful engine's in them. I can't keep buying new machines. It is about time Polaris stepped up with a new engine option and the aftermarket is going to love the new 4 cyl.
225hp is sick! Wish they'd bring an NA higher hp motor to the 64" wide machines. Either that or states like MN and WI need to expand their laws/regulations to allow for wider/safer machines. I previously owned an RS1 and that thing rips for only having 110hp, would be sick to see a Pro XP (64") with ~200hp NA.
This is a must watch for anyone who is picking up one of these. It's great to hear the highlights but even more important to know what mechanical issues to watch out for. On earlier models we preferred the Walker Evan shocks over the dynamics.. But more they don't have rebound adjustment. Great overview guys.

My pro r completely fell apart with less than 200 miles on it. One minute we were driving at 30 mph on a flat dirt road, the next we were stopped with a sheared main frame and broken ball joints around $17k in repairs. Very disappointed in polaris.
Busted Knuckle channel did a rock climb test with it already. Impressive, would be an understatement.
Love the 4 cylinder PowerPlant idea!!!
Awesome video. Long time fan of your shows. As far as the 225 hp my view is you can never have enough power. You don’t always have to use it but it’s awesome to have 😁
Thanks for watching! Agreed 💯 👍
Love the innovation and fearlessness of Polaris pushing the envelope. Love everything about it and I’m sure they will fix all little things like the shifting. I’d definitely buy one if I could. Great in depth review. Also love how easy they made the engine to service and work on…
After owning and driving the 4 seater pro R ultimate, the power fits the machine perfect. Could not ask for anything more. Love the machine.
I hope polaris has a 4 seater version. how can we switch out the shocks to dynamic? or is it too difficult because of the way they have the front mounts forked? ty
It's perfect 4 Cyl for this machine. Specialty the 4 seat enough power to go anywhere. I have the Pro R 4 seat on the way.
Safety on the trail is for the other riders as well, I've ran into a lot of folks who over drive their rzrs. Never been another machine but rzr that I catch folks over doing it on the trail. Tough to have such high power and restrict it on congested trails of the UP. Only spots we've ever had problems.
this looks amazing. cant wait till they are available.
Very well done video!
4 cylinders are long overdue!!!
Maybe when Polaris decides to innovate again a super charger would be better for power because of zero lag?
Can’t wait to get mine this winter! The 4 cylinder is a beast! 300 hp capable with cams and tuning 😎
Love the 4 cyl. Low end torque works great rock climbing in Moab!
I really like that there pushing the industry forward 💯
I've got mine on order 😎
Great video man 👍
Thank you!! ✌️👊💥
Would be nice to see the video of AJ adding the accessories. I own the same model. I have the inner door panels, windshield, and rear storage box. Thinking about adding the fender extensions. Do you have the link if that video exists?
Coming soon!
I like the idea of the 4 Cyl engine, non turbo and the lag that comes with it
Awesome!!! Give me more!!
Straight shooter on opinion… great vid , wish they would speed up delivery process … my 4 ultimate pro keeps getting pushed back…
I think the 4 cyl is perfect for people who don’t want to deal with turbo lag. I’m fine with turbo lag in my 3 cyl rotax it’s not noticeable
Great machine to take the day off... road🔥💯
Four cylinder 225hp YES
Too much power
NO
Loved the video
Lots of good info
Thank you
That shift cable is an issue on my rzr too.
Great to know and thank you for your input!!
Thank you!!
Picking up our XP1K soon!!
This thing is sick! One day I’ll have one. Any new lineups for ATV’s for 2023?
We've got a couple ATVs coming. Stay tuned!!
Power absolutely Awesome side by side Luke you and all your crew have great video’s and this one was no different absolutely great video thanks
Thank you!! 🤜💥🤛
I'm thinking it will be crazy reliable ! and just right ! wicked machine !
Awesome awesome I think it’s perfect and will be reliable? I hope. Yamaha did it in a snowmobile.
The best unit available
I like the NA 4-Banger approach. Big horsepower without turbo lag. The torque must make it feel like it has 300+ horsepower when comparing to the two cylinder turbo. Turbo motors don’t make a lot of torque. Two more pistons and connecting rods pumping on the crankshaft, it’s gotta feel like a drag car when you get it hooked up. Maybe I’ll upgrade from my Pro Xp which makes more power than I need. It’s not about need though is it? 😎
4 cylinders have their place like everything else imo. The turbo lag we just train our kinds I guess to adjust...preemptive
Thanks for another great review! Too much power? 😂 not a chance. Can’t wait to see the aftermarket power!
I'm looking at a RZR Pro XP 4 seater. Can't run 74 inch wide machines in Wisconsin. Need to stick to 65" wide units.
I am on my 2nd RZR. As far as power and engine size goes they need to stop putting bigger, more powerful engine's in them. I can't keep buying new machines. It is about time Polaris stepped up with a new engine option and the aftermarket is going to love the new 4 cyl.
This engine is really going to unlock some horsepower wars. Polaris is going to own the title for a year or two but Can Am will not lay down.
Agreed 💯
3 seconds in…. What an amazing picture 🤙🏼🤙🏼🤙🏼
