The thing about this game's RNG is that while it can totally screw you over, it can also make you feel like a total badass every now and then. When playing the thief's bonus round, I ended up with the rules Hothead (all sixes immediately catch fire), Cowboy (enemies always roll a six), and Bounty Hunter (you never roll a six). These rules that I got by pure dumb luck synergized really well and gave me a big advantage against the boss in that run. It's those little moments when the stars align that this game is at its best.
I gotta say, you're one of the few RUclipsrs whose opinion I actually take into consideration when you say "You need to play..." I've bought quite a few of the games you've reviewed, even some I would never have heard of or given a second glance. Haven't been disappointed yet. Great reviews and content in your vids! Keep it up!
Very much reminds me of Poker Quest. Loved that game. Will definitely be checking this game out, if it is even nearly the same quality I might as well call out of work for the week.
I played this game waaaay back in it's early infancy, when you could play it on the web for free. I even helped start the first wiki (that seems to not exist anymore, rip). I stopped playing it very suddenly after a week or two simply because I was playing so much that I burned myself out xD As soon as I get $15 to buy it (which is tough for a minor and in my country), I'll see what it's like after countless updates Edit: MAN I remember cornelius! he was one of the most memorable bosses in the early alphas for sure DOUBLE EDIT: Since I joined the dicecord near it's beggining, Terry Cavanagh gave me the game for free! :D HECK YEAH NOW I CAN PLAY THIS
6:19 What's even more maddening is that during the bonus round, where more rules are added the further into the dungeon you go, there is 1 rare rule which makes all fiery equipment icy and all icy equipment fiery, meaning the devs had to program reverse versions for ALL fire and ice abilities, plus upgraded and downgraded versions for the new abilities. Which is insane to me. Like they were willing to program in liquid nitrogen as a weapon, for that 1 guy who got the reverse fire and ice rule change whilst wielding a molotov cocktail.
Terry Cavanagh simply doesn't disappoint. Every single game of his that I've played has been a massive bop, even his smaller flash games on his site. I NEED this game, just because Terry developed it.

Weather Update: It took me 11 losses before I could win as witch, and my first win was solely due to the fact that the penultimate enemy was someone I could leech life to full health before I faced the final boss. Protection and Healthcare are no joke.
Finally got this game on the Switch now that it's out, and damn it all it's a must have. I mean, it really fits the "Pick up and Play" mentality of the Switch to a T. And yes that sound bird is the worst that guy can take a hike.
This game is amazing. When I turned into the bear, I thought it was just for the fight. Nope, I was stuck as a bear with new moves. I thought, this game is awesome.
@@DForSpiD Well, ep6 hard mode is strictly worse than ep4, as it's a combination of ep4 (enemies have upgraded equipment) and ep6 normal mode (random rules on each floor).
@@BCGpp you also have a wider range of spells available and the possibility of alternate status effects which can be very advantageous in certain fights. It's not strictly worse, it just has far wider variance and I find the conditions easier to work around. Thorns, for example, can be very hard to play around for the witch with upgraded enemies, but much easier if you have the alternate status effects so they don't deal extra direct damage. Therefore you're not forced down as narrow a set of moves to play around it. On average ep 6 hard might be worse, but you are still more likely to encounter a favourable situation, especially at the witches most vulnerable points
Looks interesting! I've never played a game like this, and all the enemies and characters look so cute! Plus, I reallllllly wanna hear more Chipzel after playing Just Shapes & Beats.
I made a meme character that was a Dice block with hands, and 11 people liked my meme, to see a game use a similar idea for characters is amazing, I wish I could find a way to get my little joke character in the game, but that’s unlikely
Got this on my PS5 for a little under 4 dollars and I love the game so far. Been having tons of fun as every character type, they all are so fun to experiment with and I love the episodes.
I actually knew about Dicey Dungeons because I've followed Terry Cavanagh's developer blog at Distractionware for 6 years. Do you think you could do some analysis on the strange design of his collaboration "Experiment 12"? He has some really underrated works, like the aforementioned Experiment 12, Judith, Naya's Quest, Constellation Machine, Copycat, and many more! I'd strongly recommend you try some of his available free games. Naya's Quest is honestly a work of art, as well as Experiment 12 and it's incredibly unique atmosphere and playstyle. I really appreciate somebody finally going out of the way to talk about one of Terry's works.
I really hope they release the game on consoles or on mobile. It can work way better than expected on consoles by assigning a specific button to each action slot so all you need to do to select a dice is to move from left to right and press the specific button for the attack.
I've been looking forward to this game ever since I saw this video and finally got it for Switch this weekend. It's my first dungeon crawler / deck builder, and God, what a good game this is.
I fought against loud bird on low hp (could only have enough to use limit fury once) with only one attack move I breathed a sigh of absolute relief on turn 23
Super hexagon was the game me and the boys grinded the most for a few months back in 8. grade or something like that, super cool to see more of the developer!
what i live most about this game (besides the soundtrack) is that minus assets, this could be developed in unity in like a week. It's not a crazy passion project, it's just a very thoughtful and perfectly executed concept.
I can't remember who, but someone played the Early Access of this with the Thief on a run. And they stole an Enemies form(and dice) and ended the battle. They were a BEAR the rest of the run and broke the game over their knee. It was great.
Don't forget the modding community! Megaquest adds another 36 episodes and tons of equipment, and even a couple of new enemies, More Fluff adds in over 700 more equipment to find, and there's many more, including entirely new playable characters, such as the Keymaster enemy!
I recently started playing this game and the very first (and only) time I played the Alchemist I immediately turned into a bear and completed the run as such.
I purchased Dicey Dungeons and Slay the Spire both on sale at the same time. I hated playing the Witch. The Jester was my favourite, so I knew I'd have a good time with Slay the Spire. Ended up putting around 30 hours into DD and 75 into STS. I generally don't like turn based stuff, but they were both great.
I watched a bit of dicey dungeons gameplay and got really interested. So I bought it and tried out a couple stages and.. it just lost me. Things felt same-y and repetitive, even with different characters, and it just felt like I was spending a lot of time on something I just wasn’t having fun with. I’m hoping if it comes to mobile, I’d like it a bit more. Something to pick up and play in my downtime. It definitely feels like it would be right at home on a phone, with how simple the control scheme is.
I saw a steam review mention it not being replayable, but i thibk they hadn't reached parralel universe yet. Like that's basically the replayabilty episode for evvery character.
I don't know if you have listened about the mistery dungeon franchise, but it'd be really interesting if you played a Pokemon mistery dungeon and then talked about it, and the good or bad design of it.
I also had one of those 'ohmygod that was so lucky' moments fighting a dragon boss where i won with 1 hp thanks to some quick, smart thinking and a lucky roll
