  • The 1st Infantry Division Band, under the command of Chief Brian Dorgan and Drum Major Andrei Osipov, playing Queen City in a parade honoring Larry L. Taylor:
On September 11, 2023, the 1st Infantry Division (1ID) and the city of Chattanooga, Tennessee honored U.S. Army Captain Larry L. Taylor with a parade and ceremony for receiving the Medal of Honor. Taylor, a former 1ID soldier, was born in Chattanooga in 1942 and served in the Vietnam War from 1967 to 1969. He received the award for his heroic actions during a 1968 helicopter rescue mission in which he saved four men from enemy gunfire.
A notable example of the use of military bands during Vietnam was the "Thunder Road" incident, which received national publicity. Major General John Hay, Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division, ordered his band to march down "Thunder Road" for a distance of one mile while playing the march, Colonel Bogey. This road was critical to the division but was under the control of a North Vietnamese Army regiment located less than a mile away. The enemy, confused by the action, withdrew from the area. The 1st Infantry Division Band fulfilled a remarkable combat mission without firing a shot.
