      Beer makes it a lot better. But it's mainly used for the air inside to make the batter more aerated.
      You can use carbonated/sode water to substitute.

    My husband and I have tried so many batters and not really liking the outcomes. I found this one and decided to give it a shot. For us, we decided to add a little bit more flour but apart from that it was the best batter we have come across. Thanks 🙂

      Have you tried adding cornstarch? It lightens it and makes it fluffyer 2:44

    Thank you for this recipe!!! Just tried this tonight for Spanish Mackerel! I added a little extra flour for the batter to coat nicely. I was pleasantly surprised at how the batter remained crispy after frying! 🥹 this is definitely going to be my go to for batter recipes!!! ❤️

    It actually works thank you so much , I been trying to do batter fish for so long and I been using the wrong the flour, I been using plain flour I thought it didn't matter, and it never rise, ohh my god the batter rise beautiful and fluffy, I add a little of rice flour to make it more crispy. I definitely gonna make some for son when he home for Christmas, many, thanks again for the recipe. your a saint.😁😉😊.

      Same here lol, I’m 16 I look old so buying beer would be no problem, but I’m Muslim so I can’t drink alcohol anyway lol.

    Will the coating attach to the fish with this method ? Notice when I do it, all the coating falls apart in the pan just before frying the fish. 😥

    This batter if fabulous! Had it on catfish and on chicken nuggets. Soooo good! I added about 1/4 C more flour. Water could be at 1 C. Thank you!!😊

    I was looking for batter recipe that was similar to beer batter without the beer or baking powder because I didn't have any and this worked well. I used bay seasoning instead and Alaskan Pollock. Thank you

    I tried this recipe, but 1.5 cups of water is too much. It comes out watery. I think next time I'll use 3/4 cup water.

    You can if you want. But I do people all different the way they cook it. I love my fish n chips with tartar sauce Australian fish and chips i miss it so much.

    It's called seasoning your food. Or else it tastes like paste. What's up with people putting vinegar on french fries. I was in london a year ago at a famous place had fish and chips sans the vinegar it was the best meal I had there

      Neutral oils is best. Canola etc.

    How without self raising flour? I know its strange but a question is only stupid if you know the answer right? lol I cannot buy self raising flour where I have moved, they do not even know what it is here. In my defense it is all ive ever used and so without it im a little lost

      add 2 tsp of baking powder - that is the only difference - self rising flour has baking powder in it already :)

    Your text says if using normal flour use Baking powder 1:2 ratio. Are you sure?

      Yeah, I think you are right there. I would ensure the fish isn't touching the bottom of the pan while cooking.

    It is the bubbles, NOT 5he alcohol that cause the batter to be tender. They prevent the wheat flour from forming glutin strands. So, ANYTHING with a bit of carbonation can be used

    Not sure why you wouldn't use beer?
    The alcohol evaporates completely when cooked in case you were worried.
    Is it a religious thing?
