  • Live performance from November 1989 given in The Wigmore Hall, London. Unfortunately the first few notes are missing but I believe the quality of the performance as a whole easily makes up for this. Pletnev recorded this commercially around the same time but there is far more risk taking in this live performance. Not available commercially.

terrific--as much for what it says about the greatness of the score as for what it reveals about the brilliance of Pletnev's transcription--and rendition. Truly grateful for your upload.

Its a real treasure to have this live recording - around the same time as his Virgin studio recording. Both are strikingly if only subtley different.. Thanks so much for sharing this ! Any chance of the rest of the concert ? We're waiting with bated breath!

Absolutely sure. I was there! I left the cassette recorder timed to run at home. Recently edited this digitally in Adobe Audition but have not interfered very much. The quality is good because it is a Nakamichi cassette recorder which was the same one used to make the recording. I will post the rest of the concert in due course.

Pretty sure I was there too, he gave a beautiful performance of Pictures at an Exhibition

I think this was available on Virgin Classics, coupled with the Tchaikovsky Pathetique symphony with the RNO in a 2CD set. And perhaps the Phillips Great Pianists series. Not this performance, a studio recording.

Adagio, bar 76, third note in right hand accidentally played F (correct is F sharp), after that, all of the following pianists perform the same wrong note

So much MUSIC in this performance. Some people play all the notes but none of the music. Here the notes are there but what you hear is the music! I hear that at a recent Rachmaninoff concert in NYC Trifonov played the Silver Fairy's variation for his encore. Maybe this is the new Russian school,. Let there be more playing like this!

Fantastic, but the piano is miked too close up, making the playing sound harsh in louder passages

It's a cassette from the 1980s and the BBC made the original recording. Pletnev was playing loud and hard and, as I was at the concert, I think the recording quite accurately reflects the sound he made on that day.
