The release of this album, against his wishes, pissed Frank off, but there’s no denying it contains incredible music. A personal favourite of mine. Frank’s control of feedback on this track is utterly sublime - and totally musical. Stellar performances all round.
Right on, Gatsby!!
Frank Zappa, master of guitar feedback technique
Terry Bozzio is one bad ass drummer.
I bought my 1st vinyl copy of "Sleep Dirt" in a cut out bin for a couple of bucks. It soon went out-of-print for years. It turns out that was because it was released by the record label without FZ's approval. Side note: I always thought that creature on the cover looked like the Smog Monster, from the epic film "Godzilla vs The Smog Monster".
Frank loved cheap monsters.
Me too. Cut bin.
This track is only 3 people
Frank Zappa - guitar, keyboards
Dave Parlato - bass
Terry Bozzio - drums
George Duke is on the keys.
@@ganazby nope, I don't know where you get your info from? But the sessions for that track is April-June 1976 at the record plant, those serssions were as a 3 peice (George Duke had left Zappa before that date)
Zappa is on keys here
@@HakanTunaMuzik Just doubled checked, and you are indeed correct. I’m surprised, as the technique on display sounds quite advanced. Did you get the info from The Big Note guide? Cheers.
@@ganazby No, I'm hardcore and have memorised the liner notes to the albums lol
This information came from the Lather albums notes and the reason I actually retained the information in my head is the exact same reason you just questioned it, yes indeed the technique on display sounds quite advanced and this fact always ,made me question it, and in fact I was waiting and hoping you would prove me wrong, and that you would have some info that I did not.
Maybe there is some missing info somewhere that we have not come accros yet, maybe some overdubbing down the line that was not documented, who knows?
@@HakanTunaMuzik I’ve just consulted the bible (The Big Note), and yes, it credits Frank with the keyboard parts. It’s odd, because I recall seeing a video, in which Frank described himself as a ‘two-finger piano player’. He was pretty scrupulous when it came to crediting who played on what, so I’m guessing it could’ve been a contractual thing, IF George or someone else played on it. Or maybe his technique was better than he let on. Thanks for your response.
Frank owed Warner Brothers 4 LPs on his contract. He offered them the Lather box set of 4 LPs which WB refused, saying that no one would buy a 4 LP set. They took the material and reconfigured it into 4 single LPs (Zappa In New York, Studio Tan, Sleep Dirt and Orchestral Favorites). Frank took the tapes and played them on the radio so that people could tape it in the way he intended. The Lather project was released in 1996 as a 3 CD set.
This is not exactly true - Frank made the 4 LPs before he compiled Lather. For some reason Gail Zappa decided to rewrite the story slightly later on....
@@Cpayne30 Thank you for the correction. 👍
@@jeffmartin1026 There's a real great article out there about it. Can't remember exactly where it is but it sets the story straight. Not to take anything away from Lather or the 4 albums though - they all stand up as great works IMO.
@@Cpayne30 It's good that there's still folks out there that care about keeping the story straight. There's tons of misinformation out there's about Frank's music and history, which is weird because he's easily one of the most documented musicians ever.
@@buddygripple7512 I agree with you 100% here. Lots of wrong stuff still going around. The Lather story was rewritten by Gail to make it seem a lot more triumphant and stick it to the man-like. In reality the music on both Lather and the 4 LPs were absolutely Frank's vision, minus some of the edits WB made on ZINY such as Punkys Whips being removed. The idea to make it all a 4 LP set came in late 77. For example, Orchestral Favorites' master is from 1976.
Yes! My favourite album by Zappa (SO underrated!) and a brilliant song pick from it. So stoked to check this reaction out!
Super top shelf album. If I had to pick a favorite, which I don't, I would pick the title track. The mastery on that acoustic was jaw dropping. The harmonies are SO beautiful and so Frank Zappa.
@@frankaviza6362 Yeah, it holds a special place in my heart as well. Beautiful melancholy!
Zappa is my favourite. Artist. Person. Mind. I have been obsessed since I was a teenager, long, long ago. His face is the first face I see each morning, as he hangs in my kitchen. And he's on the wall above my computer right now. There is so much for you to discover. He was even more prolific than Prince.
One of my most favourite FZ songs, and one of His own favourite solosos, as he stated in an interview. He plays the keyboards here. Nice reaction again, Thanks!
Being a new listener to Zappa, you are in for a tour de force. A prodigious genius (even with some of the juvenile humour) the output from Frank is a treasure trove of incredible music. Enjoy!
This, along with Chunga's Revenge, are the guitar work-outs I never tire of. T'was always a blast when heard live.
Check out Zappa Plays Zappa's version of this track, if you haven't. It's even better.
@@SpaceCattttt I did see the Dweez & ZpZ back in 2010 and one (or both) were preformed. Well played? Yep. Enjoyable? Yep. Better than? Nope. Very rarely is a cover better. Doesn't mean it's a bad thing. Have heard some few covers of Frank tunes done & none are better that the Masters. But,, then again I just really know how I hear it, for whatever that's worth.
Also: Rat Tomago, solo from Yo' Mama, and a million others.
Perfect analyses JP..... you nailed the description for this mysterious but brilliant piece.... really enjoyable thanks.
As gzaq said, this was like Zappa channeling King Crimson. So excited to discover this. Brilliant assessment too.
Zappa was a goat; Capricorn.
A new Zappa fave.
“Information is not knowledge.
Knowledge is not wisdom.
Wisdom is not truth.
Truth is not beauty.
Beauty is not love.
Love is not music.
Music is THE BEST!”
Some really smooth drumming on this - I thought it was Chester Thompson, who is on most of this album, but Terry Bozzio is on drums.
Check out the live foot of young Bozzio burning up the drums. He was brilliant on this song.
I think I forgot to mention *Albion* has a new single: *Finding Avalon* ruclips.net/video/y9L9MXO2kyA/видео.html (folk metal from Wales.)
Do check out the vocal versions of the songs with lyrics. Although they were great as instrumentals as well, there's quite a different level added with the vocals. (Especially in Flambay/Flambé.)
Filthy Habits is a great one. From first listen the guitars are so f***ing ballsy it's just wonderful.
His sounds are always so unique, kind of reminds me of Peter Gabriel.
Frank Zappa used to play this live after The Poodle Lecture...
it's like Zappa channeling King Crimson. A long-time favorite. I had the CD version with the vocals and drum overdubs and those tracks are perfect. Highly recommended.
Can’t make something that’s perfect more perfect. It’s fine without vocals, and I mean fooiinne.
The Crimson connection with Belew on Baby Snakes and Sheik Yerbouti.

Therapy might help. We’re here for ya.

No, I love this nonsensical back and forth, Zappa would have loved it.
Brilliant piece of music!
I love "Sleep Dirt" and "Studio Tan". It's a shame they have poor album covers and were not promoted well since there is amazing material on them.
Even though Zappa wanted the 4 album set "Lather" instead I can sympathize with Warner Brothers concern with selling it.
I think only Zappa is playing keyboards on this particular track.
I haven't heard the non-vocal versions of the tracks released on the Ryko CDs. I need to listen to them.
Hey Justin! Are you having a good day? Sure hope so! Mr Frank Zappa. Here we go! Enjoy!😎
Love the Zappa stuff. Another artist and track would be Brian Eno Babies on Fire from Here Come The Warm Jets it’s a track that doesn’t get played very often. Thanks Dave from UK
Cover art provided by Warner Bros. The blob on the cover is from a Godzilla movie, Hedera I think it's name was.
JP, this was a wonderful reaction to this song. You did a great breakdown of the song and I'm so glad you decided to delve further into the album. I'm also so elated that you've continued to listen to TOITUS on your own and now share my love of that song, like I said once you hear that one your mind opens up more to Mr. Z's music. i confess I don't love everything but I appreciate it all. I think you'll enjoy the entire album because it's really different from others you've heard as you stated, yet it has the Zappa quirkiness we all love. All the other songs on the disc are just as interesting and often fun. I love Regyptian Strut, again not typical Zappa but it's Zappa. This album even has some smokey bar room piano almost ala Billy Joel played beautifully by George Duke (my favorite Zappa keyboarist) on Flambay. Overall this is a wonderful Zappa album. ..... You know there is another song you should react to by a guy you might have heard of Pete Townsend, it's called " Give Blood" from the album White City (the entire album I recommend as well)... I haven't steered you wrong in the past so what cha got to lose???? Keep up the great work! PS: next time you listen to Filthy Habits hone in on Bozzios drumming because it's stellar. Ohh also if you can watch Alex Winters docu about Mr. Zappa, you'll love it and appreciate him so much more. Zappa was one of a kind and we were all blessed with his contribution to music and lives. Ohhh and lastly if you've never seen the RUclips video of Frank and Steve Vai just ripping it up on stage you MUST. The video is called "frank zappa duels steve vai 'stevies spanking" .... It's a must see and if you do maybe share your reaction with us...Be well and I hope the move went smoothly.
Appreciate that a ton Ron :) Ocean is absolutely epic, and this one as well!
I didn't like Alex Winter's documentary. I respect and appreciate the effort it took to get it made, plus Alex's involvement with saving Frank's vault of music,
but the film itself left me somewhat cold. Why? Because it was clearly focused almost exclusively on the early Mothers days while only adding "the other 23 years"
as an obligatory, perfunctory side note. And I think a film about the story of a person should be more varied than that.
My favorite track on the album. A side of him you're probably not familiar with yet. I love his instrumentals. You should try RDNZL by him. Btw, the artwork was not approved by FZ.
Didin´t know this and... I LOVE it!
Listen genius at work
If you want dirty nuns from Zappa, in fact he has you covered from an album he released in 1984 :)
I never listened to that album ! But that's excellent. Reminds me of Zoot Allures…
Sleep Dirt is what you wake up with in the corner of your eye.
I guess it's not Patrick O'Hearn on this track, but Rick Parlato. I'll check again and come back to you if I'm wrong obviously. Cheers from Annecy, France
IMO Sleep Dirt is one of the underdogs of Zappa's catalogue. Warner Bros put it out with very little promotion because of the ongoing legal battles they were having with Frank at the time and banished it to obscurity, which is too bad because it's one of the his most solid albums.
Nuns up kneeling… too much?
Since you started into the vastness of Zappaworld, I’ve, plus a few others, have been waiting patiently for this, a deep dive into the Sleep Dirt… you come out dirty, oily, and crusty but it’s worth it. Enjoy!
Hope you got through Nicole ok.
Ty David :)
I'd love you to try "White Bread, Black Beer" by Scritti Politti. It seems to fit your ethos...
This album was always in the cutout bin back in the day
I don't know if my recommending this track had something to do with you reacting to it now, or if you picked it simply because it's the first track on the album, but I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I agree that it conjures up images of water. Perhaps polluted water, as you say, but I also get the same feeling of inevitable, impending doom I get when I listen to Zeppelin's "When the Levee Breaks". - Something is about to go seriously wrong, and since there's nothing anyone can do about it, all you can do is sit and watch it unfurl.
Oh, I wouldn't read too much into the album cover. Frank had nothing to do with it and never liked it. It's just a visual pun on the album's title.
As for the vocal tracks on the album? Thana Harris' great vocals adorn "Flambay", "Spider of Destiny" and "Time is Money" and unlike a significant majority of Zappa fans, I actually
much prefer those vocal versions over the instrumental ones. But it's definitely worth it to hear both versions!
Any Zappa is good for me.
I have the original LP, without, and the CD, with vocals, and I will say, I DESPISE vocals ruining those 3 tracks. The compositions all stand alone as spectacular without any vocals, and I kinda wish that Frank didn't add them (because they ruined my CD). I'm not a huge fan of vocals on Jazz, but since some artists pull it off well ( and the compositions are initially released with vocals, as intended) and I do have some in my catalog. I will also wait for you to do a reaction video to "The Ocean is the Ultimate Solution", as that one is the true gem on this album. The keyboard work does remarkably sound like George ( listen to "Big Swifty" , from "You can't do that live on Stage anymore, Vol 1", which is, a "produced" version of one of his "Roxy Live" performances), but if Frank was credited I will believe that he copied George's style well.
Dave Parlato on bass, btw
I personally prefer the original vinyl versions without the vocals but I'm sure there are those out there that prefer the vocal versions.
do "Rat Tomago" next. won't regret it.
This is indeed one of Zaapa's darkest tracks.
I don’t know, The Torture Never Stops is pretty dark and seamy.
Not even close to Jonestown, though.
Don't give the cover art much cred JP, it was one of three albums WB put out without Frank's approval, and the cover art came from them, not Frank.
Studio Tan
Sleep Dirt
Orchestral Favorites
I've always found Crimson's music kind of clinical and cold, I'm not saying they didn't have feeling, just different. Frank's music is soulful and organic and complex at the same time. A completely different animal altogether. Frank's music is his own genre, let's be fair...
Spot on, brother.
I have both versions. I actually prefer the instrumental album as aside from "Flambay" , the other songs are clearly from a musical and don't really stand alone as songs in themselves. Flambay is a great song and the other two make great instrumentals.
"Spider Of Destiny," "Time Is Money" and "Flambe" were written for the "Hunchentoot" musical.
@@bookhouseboy280 I think the whole album is, its just that the lyrics depend on that rather than just the instrumentals. If it was released as a "Hunchentoot" selection album it would have made more sense.
Great reaction but those credits you're reading from are not accurate. Sleep Dirt is assembled from tracks that were recorded at different times with different players. Ruth and Duke are on 4 tracks. Filthy Habits is Dave Parlato on bass and the title track is a duet with James Youmans
You looked like you really were digging the first 4 minutes or so then you looked bored. I’ve always thought this song dragged on a bit but there’s no arguing it is just bad ass. I totally love it. Seems you did too. Great reaction!
Oh I love this one :D Sometimes I just have a bad resting face lol🤣
@@JustJP fair enough. Glad you enjoyed it!
@@marlon-jl4ge you are entitled to your wrong opinion.
Keyboards are all Frank.
Frank and Miles
I don't mean to be a stickler, because with Zappa it can be kinda nuts with the group lineups, and this album is a particular mess. Lots of stuff to point out, but first up... it's Dave Parlato on Bass on this track and ALSO on The Ocean is the Ultmate Solutiuon, because that song has 2 bass players including Patrick O'Hearn. (you see why it's confusing?) also... the instrumental version of the album and the version with vocals are slightly different. The vocal version of the album has a slightly edited version of Filthy Habits with a few guitar licks taken out... the version you just listened to is from the original master, but it seems to be about 25 seconds LONGER than I am used to hearing, PLUS it has the guitar solo in it's complete form so.... this seems to be yet a THIRD release of tihis song. I have no idea where this version comes from,, because it's NOT the original vinyl release version, and it's NOT the edited version from 1989. Maybe some other Zappa fanatic can answer that one. In the last minute of the song, besides the final blues lick that closes the solo out... the solo is backwards. And lastly, but maybe most important... you should know that Frank Zappa had absolutely nothing to do with this album cover or the name of the album. It was supposed to be called Hot Rats III. And it was delivered along with three other albums to finish out a contract as stated elsewhere in these comments. Only Zappa Live in New York had album artwork and liner notes... this was delivered WITHOUT liner notes. And without artwork to Warner Bros. So they hired a guy to do three album covers. Frank hated those album covers. I agree with Frank.
@@Frunobulax74 I have a feeling that was just business savy. He knew people knew the albums with those covers, so he kept them.
Sleep Dirt is the Best....!
This was meant to "reply" but gets stuck when I try. ... wow, that's a poem, innit?
Anyway
Here, just in case you one day need to know what Fast and Bulbous means. ruclips.net/video/nlcZYOENgcQ/видео.html (Captain Beefheart - school mate of Frank Zappa - cult leader - singer - possibly slightly touched by the daffodil of schizophrenia upon the left cheek, too.)
The album's albumin is formed carapaciously unto *Trout Mask Replica* cavaleiro monge-leigh - in the dialectic sense. Sense? Too much sense. Stop making sense. Someone had an album by that name once.
Zapped
the album cover is just a joke man, sleep dirt is the greasy stains you start to get from not showering and sleeping in the same bed. its gross but its not that deep. Zappa touched on the absurd and mundane like this all the time. Weather is the grime or "sleep dirt" on your bed or the poor boy "burnt wheeny sandwiches" he use to make.....yah..take that for what it is,.....
Justin. I made a decision over 40 years ago to cut Zappa from my collection. I regret I can not give you any 'views' or 'likes' for Frank Zappa. I will have to leave it all to your other viewers.
