Thank you so much for all your videos, you've really helped me getting into backpacking and hammock camping and this video could not have come at a better time, stars are aligning with travel plans and I will be following your exact footsteps through VA next week! Thanks again for all the time you put into these videos Adam
I know it's been a while, but videos like this never get old. Thanks so much for documenting! Planning my own adventure this year. Interestingly enough, I just finished Bill Irwin's book Blind Courage, story of the first Blind thru-hiker to complete the AT, with his dog Orient. It was an incredible read. So, it was extra neat to see you bump into Disciple. Thanks again man!!
I'm actually from Pembroke VA and if you ever go back to do the triple, I highly recommend that you take a few hours to check out The Cascades. It's only a 4ish mile loop but it leads to a 66' waterfall and it is BEAUTIFUL. It's about an hour from Catawba. www.virginia.org/listings/OutdoorsAndSports/CascadesNationalRecreationTrail/
Cool! I’m assuming this video came up for me because I just uploaded my triple crown videos. Just did this hike last week. Wish I’d seen your video first! I parked at Daleville and got shuttles down to Dragons Tooth to hike north. So cool you got to meet Not By Sight and Jays on the Trail. Followed them both last year. I met only a few thru hikers since it was later in the summer and I was walking northbound. All the best, happy hiking!!
Great video, your a terrific host, and the whole hike was very interesting and fun to watch. The views were awesome on video, hopefully someday I can see them in person. Thanks for filming your hike for us spectators to enjoy. Hope all your outdoor adventures are safe and enjoyable.
I like the hiking but honestly love the audio book recommendations. Lol. I actually picked up Ready Player One because of one of your trips last year. Seriously one of my favorite books I'd read in a while.
Greetings from a UK Backpacker, love your videos, many thanks for sharing your trips. The AT looks amazing but you must do it before you retire! Don't wait 'till your an old man like me.
I know this video is old, but I stumbled upon it since my friends and I are planning this exact hike in May 2020. I wanted to see what our experience will be like...also ended up subscribing to your channel and watching more videos. Keep it up, even though you're a Penguins fan...Go Sabres!
I'm going to be hitting this trail with some buddies of mine in October so I thought I would watch your trip video which was great btw. You should watch it again when you have a moment, it's funny to hear you talking about wanting to do the AT one day (before you retire - ha!).
I live in Cleveland Ohio and have been hiking for 20 years. I make the drive to a hike in Virginia at least twice a year. Once you go you know why!! Great video once again.
Cool to see that you have been bit by the AT bug! I live near the trail and it works it's way into your soul. Fantastic adventure! That section of trail up to Dragon's Tooth looked kinda intense!
Man Frozen i'm so inspired by your videos bro. I think i'm gonna start a hiking Chanel on RUclips. Cause they're some beautiful hiking trails right here in Jamaica. time for me to take advantage of that. i'd kill for those scenery as shown in this video. "Tinker Cliffs" Over look.
Awesome vid Frozen-- looks like an amazing time! My wife and I just got back from Vermont last weekend (mem day) hiking the first 40 miles of the Long Trail/AT. We met around a dozen through hikers over our 4 day trip. They started late February/early March in Georgia and were already in Vermont.. averaging 20-30 miles a day. We had 2 solid days of heavy rain, so we didn't get much in the way of views at overlooks. Talking to the thru-hikers was definitely one of the highlights of my trip-- have the upmost respect for those guys-- the AT is no joke. One of these days you seriously have to go experience the Long Trail. Would love to see you thru-hike that - 272 miles. Thanks again for sharing this trip- I learn something new every time I watch!
It is on the long list of trips to do. I'll start with the Superior Hiking Trail and work my way up in miles. Not bragging at all but after months of hiking every day I'd probably be one of those people doing 20-30 miles each day. I'd want to take the least time off work as I can. Were any of those thru hikers assisted? Meaning they had someone following them with resupply?
Haha! I know you would be! I was thinking about you while out there about how many miles you'd be doing, we averaged 10 a day (7, 13, 8 and 12). We met ONE thru that was what they call "slack packing" because of how bad the conditions were-(he was the only SBer we met) and another thru was "blue blazin" to go re-supply in town and avoid an especially muddy section of the trail that we did. But we didn't run into anyone that had someone actually following them with their backpack, just one that had someone else driving it to another road crossing. The thru's that we met that were avg'ing 20-30 were only doing 12-15 on the section we were because of how bad the mud was, and the trail was the most technical I've ever done. Each step was carefully placed.. I wound up breaking a trek pole on day one. Seriously underestimated how difficult it was going to be, but my motivation was a brewery pub in Bennington that kept me going one foot in front of the other. My IT band is still recovering from that last day -- I was a peg leg just like meerkat on your last LHHT trip.. luckily my wife is a physical therapist and has been working on me- but it's still in pain!
Another great trip, climbing the Dragon's Tooth reminded of videos of the Precipice in Acadia National Park (bucket list)... you said you might head north!! We hiked Hawksbill Loop partly on the AT in Shenandoah NP and saw similar awesome views. Can't wait for the next Outdoor Adventure... Yours or Ours!!
I loved McAfee. Took my son there 2 years ago. Nothing like coming around that trail and it opening up and that view is awesome. The experience is like coming out of the Fort Pitt tunnels. Lol. Need to go do the Triple Crown though
I will be doing that in about 2 weeks....doing a little bit in Grayson highlands state park and then going from catawba to daleville. what we got planned may have to skip dragon's tooth though. I we have 11 miles to do and I want to be at mcafee knob before sunset so we will see. this trip is about taking our time and enjoying the hike and not about pounding miles. Thanks for the video and I can't wait!
Great video. I started my journey in hiking/backpacking last year and happened upon Roanoke for business. I found out the AT went through the area and that I should at least hike McAfee Knob. I did a day hike out there and is still one of my favorites. I hope to return and do the triple crown of Va. soon. Thanks for sharing. I enjoy watching your channel.
You mentioned hiking the AT when you retire. I suggest not waiting unless your are supremely happy at your current job. I've been at my we'll paying great benefits job since 1999. I'm miserable. I've told my wife I'm quiting in 2021 to hike the PCT. She's cool with it! Life is short man. Hike the AT and find a new job when you get done. Or better yet find a gal who wants to live a vagabond lifestyle and get all hippy and happy on us. Think Darwin on the Trail. That dude looks super happy. Anyway... another great video. Thanks for bringing us along. PS I'm only 30 minutes into the video and I've wanted to comment about 5 times. All in good ways. I truly enjoy your content. Thanks man.
Planning my appalachian trail hike....I'm a Pittsburgh native also....You represented us well....I've hiked that section of trial in Virginia, beautiful....A nice trial north of pittsburgh is the Rachel Carson trail, you probably already know that, but you never know....Absorb it all in, while you still can.....Good job bro....
Thanks for sharing, great video of the views. It wouldn't be a Frozen trip if you didn't take a wrong turn. It's become a benchmark for your solo trips. Keep on hiking on!
Just came across this video you made awesome ...thinking I might do this next summer been ,training to do the AT in 2020 and I'm sure this will be right up my alley thanks for sharing it and I hope you get to get on the AT very soon 😀
Funny to see you've met Jay's on the trail. I am following them from the beginning of their thru hike. Curious if you're in their vlog. Have a good hike!
Awesome video. Yep that's my state. Those overlooks are good but not far off of the normal for Va. Come back soon and check out other options we have here.
We just did that hike! That downhill 3 miles from Tinker cliffs on Andy Layne Trail was really somethin' (We had parked our car down there and got a ride to our start a few miles south of Dragon's Tooth). My knee was already killing me from doing almost 11 miles from four Pines hostel to McAfee Knob the day before, and down from Dragon's tooth the day before that, so that 3 miles of downhill was not my favorite although it was supremely beautiful! It really sucks though that you ended up having to go six miles out of your way to get back to the AT. Great video, though! It was good to see someone else's perspective of this hike... Our 11 year old daughter came with us, I was so proud of her for doing an almost Eleven Mile day on her first backpacking trip! By the way, they've painted over the yellow blazes on The Andy Layne Trail now and it's a blue-blazed trail, so no one who's trying to follow the white blazes will mistake the pale yellow for white anymore. I'll bet that's happened to a bunch of people.
@@FrozensAdventures well that's good! That explains why you had such a good attitude about it. LOL. I was thinking man he's doing so well with the fact that he just had to do 6 unplanned miles, I would be cussing the whole way LOL
Great trip and video, thanks for taking us along! You didn’t say but I’m guessing the whippoorwill shut up for you? lol. Don’t get to carried away looking at views in a cow pasture, you might step in something if you’re not watching the ground! lol. It’s a great video as always!
Great section of trail!! I've actually done that section before, but in cloudy weather. So, no great views for me. But still beautiful in it's own way. Looking forward to going back in better weather.
As usual, great video. Usually I focus on your set up and take down. But the scenery in this one couldn't be beat. Also, as to snakes: the other venomous snake in the area, in addition to the rattlesnake, is the copperhead. It especially likes tall grass along trails.
Nice video. This is my neighborhood. That campground near Tinker Cliffs is sometimes popular with bears in late summer. Tinker Cliffs has the best views to my eye. If you look to your left on the cliffs, you can easily make out McAfee Knob (pronounced “MAC-a-fee”) several miles down the ridge line. Another nearby trail is the Audie Murphy Trail; dedicated to the most decorated soldier of WWII and movie star. While it’s not particularly scenic, it has a small makeshift memorial to Murphy as he was killed in a plane crash nearby. Finally, there’s a short, but fun four-miler up and back from Daleville to Tinker Top and back. If you hike just a bit further past the peak, you’ll gain a great view down at Carvins Cove Reservoir. I’ve run into bear there, on Tinker Top, and over on McAfee’s. Happy Trails! PS - Do not drink that Andy Lane water! Cattle frequent that creek and, unfortunately the local waters are affected by runoff.
Yes I spent some time paying my respects to the Murphy monument a few years after this video in 2019 when I thru hiked the AT. ruclips.net/video/Bdrfx6Q6v_M/видео.htmlsi=aXQlpsg2alj3sLQz&t=761
I would have loved to hear some of those stories....I think a missed opportunity for an interesting video, still a good video as always but maybe next time you can show some of the people you meet and chat up on the trail.
I don't like to get too up close and personal with people I meet on the trail. Reason being is I don't want to take them out of their element and throw social media at them.
Great video. The yellow trail you "bumped" into earlier appears to have blazes that are 2x6" dimensions...a blaze that is usually reserved for the AT, especially in the east coast and trails that close to each other. Compounding the problem is that other blaze is light yellow which can look white at first glance in the sun. Not a lot of thought went into marking that yellow trail.
I'm planning to hike this loop in early October and was considering starting at the Andy Lanyne parking lot to knock out the North Mountain section out early. I figured it would be more motivating to save the best views for last and starting there would get the long water carry out of the way. Do you think that would make the trip a little better?
Yes I think that would be fine. I just went back and did the loop again and the north mountain trail is a bit more overgrown than it was in this video, but still not bad. Just a heads up though depending on where you are camping night 1, the section between dragons tooth and McAffee Knob is going to be bit tiring if you do it that way. So just keep that in mind. Not too bad but just a heads up. Remember there is no camping on the AT in this section except at designated spots.
awesome video man. always waiting for ur stuff. always enjoyable. u seem like a quality solid fella just sharing your good energy. when's the next video?:)
Frozen, so you parked at McAfee trail head. The second night, did you end up staying at the junction with north mountain trail and the AT? Im looking at possibly doing the loop around Easter time. Taking your advice that the views on the north mountain ridge will be better in early spring. If you were to do it again, would you not do north mountain trail and just go from dragons tooth to lamberts meadow and backtrack along the AT? - Corey
The 2nd night was right at the bottom of dragons tooth, there is a campsite (you can't miss it). I think creating the loop was really cool and in the spring I think you'd get a great view on north mountain. But it's a beautiful trip either way you go. Won't be as crowded this early if you go soon.
Been following those folks and bunch more u tubers for the AT thru hikers enjoy your vids live in west Chester and done many of the trails u have done in PA ...STS next may that's the plan check out the loyalsock trail can get shuttle from the east finish.
"when you retire"? really? whats stopping you? My friend tomorrow may never come. What responsibility s could be so morally confining to paralyze your adventurous soul? excellent video as always Jason. You've got quite a talent to entertain. can't wait to see the AT thru hike. Thank You.
I'm in a very sound job and well into my career. It would be very financially irresponsible of me. But I have kicked around the idea for about a year now. Thanks for watching.
there is a guy that i have been following on RUclips hiking the At started as a newbie to hiking in February. he has been great to watch. he is in Connecticut as of 6/7/2017 goes by Reddmage.
Jason/Frozen, Awesome video! One of your best, if not the best! I noticed that you didn't use your new Hammock Gear tarp. I'm thinking about getting that tarp and was curious why you didn't take the HG tarp on this trip. Again, awesome video.
+ChuckGC59 said it in the video but it's getting fixed. I thought the d rings we're sewn at the wrong angle making the middle very droopy. But it was cut wrong hg is making me a new one . I should have it in a couple weeks.
@@FrozensAdventures Wonderful, thank you! I conquered Foothills last summer. Wasn’t sure I could take on elevation like that for a three day triple crown trip this spring. Appreciate the info!
Nice Video. I moved to Roanoke back in 2013, I’ve hiked in this area a lot. You should Thru Hike, I did it back in 2010 Maine to Gergia, you won’t regret it.
I don't let weather or temperature stop me from doing hikes. I've hiked in as high as 101F degree weather and as cold as -13F. Obviously you have to be safe about it. Keep yourself hydrated and cool in the summer. On hotter days the buff I wear on my head is soaked in cold water either from streams or drinking water. it keeps my neck and head cool.
+cmbman2003 second camp site had water but it was about a 7 minute walk down the trail that led to the dragons tooth parking lot. First camp site I said 8n the video was at the lamberts meadow.
Brother, awesome video! Thank you for sharing. I'm looking on doing this next year (2020) not sure yet what time frame but i trully enjoyed watching your video much love 🙏🌎🏕🏞
Do you need permit to camp at the AT Lambert Meadow Campsite (night 1)? Same question: do you need permit to camp on your night 2 on the North Mt. Trail?
There have been plenty of advice to hike before retiring, and I get that. My advice would be, watch for any windows/doors to open up to anything you want, and then GO FOR IT. I was lucky enough to see a partial opening and took it in 2009 when I hiked the AT. If it is something you want, watch and listen through life and go for it. The windows and doors are not always super obvious and in your face, sometimes it is just a crack with dull light, watch and listen carefully. This may apply to more than just hiking. Edit: When I went through this area, McAfee Knob was pouring rain and no view, but later that day when I was at Tinker Cliffs, the sky started opening for the view. I had to take a nice long break up there.
This is one of the best hiking videos that I have watched. Well done, and thanks for sharing your adventure.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for all your videos, you've really helped me getting into backpacking and hammock camping and this video could not have come at a better time, stars are aligning with travel plans and I will be following your exact footsteps through VA next week! +Adam Cloninger haha awesome man, have fun!
Triple crown is on my list for the spring. Keep it up man. Love the videos
Going on this hike next week! Thanks for the video of your journey!!
Dropping in to let you know that I'm rewatching this and appreciate it. You've convinced me to get out of my stupor and do this hike asap.
Good!
It’s easy to get in a rut. Takes effort and a bit of perhaps courage to get out of it. I hope you did it!
I live about 30 minutes from this hike but I've never been on it. Thanks for sharing! Great video
This is exactly why Virginia is the best place. You can't beat the mountains and the views.
I already want to go back

I would have suggested Mountain Lake (featured in Dirty Dancing) but unfortunately it has pretty much disappeared. It kinda sprung a leak :(
Out West has the best views and the best mountains...Hard to beat Oregon and Washington
I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks buddy. Keep it up.
Watching this just now planning to do the section for the first time thanks for this video
I so needed this video today! I needed something to take my mind away from this terrible day. You are such a likable guy! Thank you.
Glad I could help and thanks for watching
What a fun trip! Loved all the wildlife - and not so wildlife (cows) and all the amazing views!!! Thanks for sharing your adventure!
Thanks for watching!
I love your RUclips. I just hiked the Mcafee Knob Trail and loved it!
Did you take the north mountain trail back? How is it these days?
Well done as always, Frozen. Thanks for taking us along with you on your adventure(s).
This is so inspiring, can’t wait to try this!
Try to hit it on a weekday instead of a weekend. It gets busy!
Gorgeous trail and views! Thanks for taking me along on your hike!

Great video. Thanks. I'm planning to move to Roanoke in 2020. I'm looking forward to hiking these trails. Awesome views.
you would have a blast thru hiking the AT and I know you would make fantastic videos of your journey
A lot of the trees that are bent like that are old Indian trail markers, it's a very cool window into the past. Thanks for the video!
Man, I am blown away by the quality of your video. Definitely taking notes for our future videos. Can't wait to catch the next one!

Yea I was a bit worried on the north mountain trail in the tall grass, it was pretty bad in some areas.
Super job! Very helpful! Thanks

@ I left a coin there myself
Awesome. I am hoping to do this fall 2020.
watching this makes me miss the AT more and more
OUTSTANDING BEAUTY!
Spacing out, yea I think that is also called enjoying your surroundings in nature. I hope you enjoyed the AT.
Thanks for the share, even the detour,Lol! Bro. it happens to us all. If you don't take a wrong trail, your not hiking!!!
Thanks for sharing hope to get there in the fall
Very inspiring! I really, really want to do this.
Great video. Thanks.
Great video
I would have loved to hear some of those stories....I think a missed opportunity for an interesting video, still a good video as always but maybe next time you can show some of the people you meet and chat up on the trail.
I don't like to get too up close and personal with people I meet on the trail. Reason being is I don't want to take them out of their element and throw social media at them.
that's fair and I admire your ethics, I can imagine the line of making a video and not encroaching on anyone is a fine line to walk.
Good hike with amazing views! I'm still using the edge tarp. It has worked good so far.
Congrats to the Pens!! Maybe my Wings will do something next year?
+uptrail71 no way. We are going for 3
They have the team to do it with. Wow! 2 shutouts to end the series..
The crazy tree that you saw is called a “bent” tree. Native Americans would do that to saplings in order to mark their trails.
I researched that when I got home. Really cool stuff.
U R s sssooo rite ,,
I'm planning to hike this loop in early October and was considering starting at the Andy Lanyne parking lot to knock out the North Mountain section out early.
Sweet can't wait to check it out
awesome video
I LOVE THIS PLEASE DO ANOTHER
Thank for sharing 👍
awesome video man. always waiting for ur stuff. always enjoyable. u seem like a quality solid fella just sharing your good energy. when's the next video?:)
Next week =P
Outdoor Adventures ...nice! we miss shirtless Gary too! btw. do u enjoy joe robinets videos?
I subscribed but haven't made it through any of his videos yet.
+John Costello STS in the spring will be beautiful. Check out early_riser_71 if you haven't already
Outdoor Adventures been watching early riser from day 1 .,... following a bunch some have summited
I'm hiking this trail next weekend.
Might see you there.
Since you have hiked the triple crown and the Foothills trail, can you tell me how the elevation compares?
Foothills trail is much more elevation gain than the triple crown. The triple crown area is fairly tame comparatively.
Great Channel Thanks for sharing 🌲✌🏽️🌲
what point do temps start to bother u in the summer? what is not safe to hike in?
I don't let weather or temperature stop me from doing hikes. I've hiked in as high as 101F degree weather and as cold as -13F. Obviously you have to be safe about it. Keep yourself hydrated and cool in the summer. On hotter days the buff I wear on my head is soaked in cold water either from streams or drinking water. it keeps my neck and head cool.
where was the first and second campsite that you used? was there water at the second campsite?
+cmbman2003 second camp site had water but it was about a 7 minute walk down the trail that led to the dragons tooth parking lot. First camp site I said 8n the video was at the lamberts meadow.
thanks, you have inspired me to hike the VA triple crown!
I 100% understand what you mean about solo hiking.
Great video! At 27:15 in the video, what stove were you using? Thank you!
That's a fancee feast alcohol stove, I made it. Here's a tutorial if it's interested. ruclips.net/video/rPbgvTPI9Qg/видео.html
Where did you find the squintcher packs at.
Where you find everything =P Amazon
Brother, awesome video! Thank you for sharing. I'm looking on doing this next year (2020) not sure yet what time frame but i trully enjoyed watching your video much love 🙏🌎🏕🏞
Good job dude .Those vista's r awesome compared to beam rocks ,baughman trail ect. any snowmobile trails down there? lol
I didn't see any lol. There were even signs saying only foot traffic
I love watching your videos. Was wondering if you ever hiked the North Country Trail in the Allegheny National Forest or any part of Pa.?
+v hodak a very small part of it while I was at minister Creek. I'm talking like a mile though.
Great video!!! Do you have a link to the map used at around the 2 minute mark? Would be much appreciated!
DOH! Found it!

Yup that's the one
Do you need permit to camp at the AT Lambert Meadow Campsite (night 1)? Same question: do you need permit to camp on your night 2 on the North Mt. Trail?
+Nghia Do no you just need to make sure you can.p in those areas.
All the times I visited Roanoke and never considered this...
