The difference is that when someone asks respect there are two ways they could mean it and older folks usually expect the latter. When younger folks want respect the expect to be treated like an equal while on the other hand older people tend to think of respect as being treated like an authority. It's a subtle difference but once you realise that you understand why they are the way they are
