  • Lots of action at Deshler this day. There were two southbounds that came through town, an empty coal train and a train of sheet metal and scrap hoppers, which is unusual. There was a meet between an empty ethanol train and a coal train, and a meet coming off the southeast leg. Foreign power including Canadian Pacific, UP, BNSF, and a BSNF Warbonnet which was a nice surprise. There was a variety of power, including SD40-2's, and a GP30 slug set. A good mix of containers and freight. And of course those famous B&O CPL signals.

That's got to be one of the hottest train spots anywhere!
    Thanks for this great video.

Cool B&O CPL...by now (2020) there's most likely none on the system. I'm an Ohio native but last time I seen a B&O CPL was late 2016 in Glendale, Hamilton and also Mitchell Ave in Cincinnati. By now they're most likely replaced. Just glad I was around to see them. I grew up directly across from this Chicago-Baltimore mainline in Kent Ohio, as part of the New Castle Subdivision. I'd watch the CPLs light up from my bedroom window and know a train had just entered the block. You could also hear the trains either speed up or slow down depending on what signal they received, due to a wall that reflected the sound, which could be heard for miles. Most people think the trains keep you up at night. I was the opposite. They ROCKED me to sleep.

The CPLs are still at Deshler. And there are a few other places in Ohio with them.

Thanks. My two phantom 4 drones are worn out and retired now and my mini is garbage in comparison. Hopefully next year I can find a more suitable replacement.

Excellent viewing. A different perspective. Nice to see the relative street crossings and signals. Gotta wonder why they have propane tanks sitting next to the tracks with no buildings around. then theres the guy, looks like he has two above ground pools in his back yard. Amazing footage.

The propane tanks next to the tracks are fuel for the track heaters. Ice can form on the switches and block them from moving. During the winter flames heat the rail using propane.

The propane tanks are for keeping the switches from freezing.

The red roofed depot was torn down about 5 months ago.

Great video! It would be great if you were here for the diamond replacement. The skies could be a little crowded.

Thanks. I always wanted to visit Deshler. I grew up on the B&O St Louis mainline and I hated seeing it abandoned. I had to come while the old signals where still there.

I'm taking a roadtrip to Deshler next summer to do some railfanning along w pics and videos. What's the average amount of trains that pass through there daily?
