Mukoma Dougie mabaya dede nemukanwa. Truth be told, we Zimbabweans have a propensity to create dictators of our own, populism is our mantra. I wonder whether we even understand the democracy we like to preach about every other day. We may not actually be ready for this type of democracy because we don't have knowledge of so many facets of these binding frameworks which are meant to be driven by the constitution. It's a bit similar to the issue of Vatican I, II, etc. We have a lot of Catholics on the continent who go to mass each Sunday but they do not know what all these Vatican sessions were about. It's high time our people begin to accept to be educated about the importance of constitution & thereafter decide whether they want to follow it or not. We have one man one vote but I think if we take it an extra step we could go a long way; one informed man, one wise vote.

    • @RudoMoto

@Ray, l like your analysis. Zimbabwean politics is all about populism and big words and phrases that noone ever bothered to take time to read and understand what that actually means in our own context. Trevor is a smart journalist and a shrewd business person but he can't just rely on this reputation and hope that this will give him contextual information in every interview he does. He clearly didn't do his due deligence in terms of reading about the MDC history and factional struggles prior to this interview, leaving him relying on what Mwonzora was telling him to formulate follow up questions. This isn't only lazy journalism but also dangerous journalism as it woodwinks us to believe in falsehoods.
If Mwonzora is a constitutionalist as he claims he is he must have resigned from being an MDC appointed senator as the court has since ruled that Chamisa's rise to power violated the constituion. You can't be recalling MDC MPs and at the same cling to an MDC Alliance position which is giving you income (He is still an MDC Alliance appointed). If Chamisa was spiteful I don't think he would have appointed him as a senator. So Mwonzora's lies need to be exposed for what they are. He is no constitutionalist but a self seeking politician.
I agree with him that Chamisa's appointment to the position of president of the MDC-T after Tsvangirai's death was problematic from a legal point of view. But Mwonzora, as a constitutionalist, should have raised this issue from both inside and outside the party. To my surprise, Mwonzora only became vocal about this issue after his abortive attempt to replace Chamisa as the MDC president. It's interesting to know that Mwonzora's first person to be recalled from parliament was the MDC secretary general (Charlton Hwende) who had defeated him at the Gweru congress. Do you sense any revenge here? It looks like he was eager to punish Hwende for defeating him at the congress.
Trevor should have also asked Mwonzora who helped Elias Mashavire to file against the MDC Allianace. It's common knowledge that Mwonzora was the legal brians behind this court application but this charlatan doesn't have the gutts to own it.
So what this context do is to portray a double crossing Mwonzora who was both trying to defeat the MDC Alliance in court while at the same vying to be the leader of the MDC Alliance which he considered to have no constitutional basis. Can one be more comical than this? You can't fool us Mwonzora.
We are also where we are today because of the poorly drafted 2013 MDC-ZANU Pf constitution which Mwonzora was a key part of. So when we cry about electoral fraud we should be pointing at Mwonzora as a legal fraudster for handing us a fundamentally flawed constitution which has enabled ZANU PF to remain in power. This is the same guy who, as a secretary general of the MDC Alliance had two candidates representing the MDC Alliance in the same constituency in the just ended general elections. What good lawywer does that unless if he wanted to mess up things for the party he had a love-hate relationship with. These are things Trevor needed to bring up and have Mwonzora address in this interview. I don;t want to consider Trevor a biased journalist but this interview was shambolic to say the least. He barely asked any critical questions to a politician who has done many questionable things.
Zimbabweans are being taken for granted by these self seeking politicians who masquerade as constitutionalists and democrats yet their actions only serve to pertuate ZANU hegemony. Please show some respect for the suffering people in Zimbabwe. People don't believe everything any politicians in Zimbabwe says. There is a lot of conmen and conwomen out there.

To be honest, these are not the hard hitting questions about the man that we would like to hear. It seems like some autobiography of some sort. Douglas does have some fighting qualities and lots of legal knowledge. I am not so sure that would be enough to make him a successful leader. Mukoma Dougie lacks charisma, tact and ability to win hearts and minds. At the risk of sounding elitist, constitutionalism, principles and legality are all virtues that we all love, however that alone without the skill to reach across the aisle and solve internal disputes is not enough to win votes or create a united party. Rather populism and personality play a great part on the voters at large and Dougie doesn’t appear to have mastered that art. A typical case in point is the ascendancy to power of the likes of Boris Johnson, Donald Trump, Dutete, Jeremy Corbyn, Mugufuli,...l hope you get the point.

Very insightful and from the experience this man has,I personally think he has what it takes to be a leader,as long as he does not divert, like others have done.Once in power, many promises are broken because you are now dealing with reality rather than presumptions and wishful thinking.Politics is dirty and it will be great to know what their party's constitution says if a leader becomes corrupt. What strict measures do they implement because I think that should be the fear factor for any leader trying to run a country. We are tired of promises.I noticed a little bit of arrogance when he talked about how he took over Morgan Tsvangirai house...that reminds me of the tactics of the ruling party.Great interview though...MDC Alliance next.

he is an opportunist because if he was principled he should have challenged the appointments of Chamisa as vice president by Morgan Tsvangirai in 2016 not to wait for Tsvangirai to first die.this means if he was still alive that violation of the law could be alive and unchallenged.all of them in the MDC are opportunists .they are now saying they are defending Tsvangirai yet Tsvangirai is the one who violated the constitution .they also were part of the meetings in the standing committees and national council that endorsed Tsvangirai appointment of Chamisa. all of them are power hungry morons masquerading as constitutionalist.Chamisa as successor of the struggle is sealed. 2008 we won but opposition was divided. infact the current MDC A and people of Zimbabwe are winners cause we have finally got rid of those who think they are entitled and in a struggle for positions.Zimbabwe politics if finally clean and the MDC alliance is filled with people who understand that positions and constitutions are the means to the end.Tsvangirai saw that to elevate Chamisa and present him as a formidable successor will need him to use the provision of the MDC T constitution that congress can consitutinalise illegal decisions.

Good attempt at PR. However, Senator you know Politics is sometimes about Charisma and likeability both of which evades you. My problem with you is that Zanu PF know better than you do that certain issues especially party matters are best solved politically rather than legally. The issue of ZANUPF leadership after the unconstitutional overthrow of Robert Mugabe was not subjected to constitunality but was solved politically. This is why Mnangagwa took over and not Phekezela Mpoko. Mnnangagwa would not want this to be subjected to a legal process because he would loose since Mpoko was supposed to take over as the only deputy president of ZANUPF at the time Bob was overthrown. It is in this context the people see you as a sell out in that ZANUPF is perceived to be supporting in a legal/constitutional process which is weakening the opposition, something they themselves would not do in their party. Finally, considering the way ZANUPF is hurted at he moment it will be very difficult for people to dispel the idea that you're a sellout considering your cordial relationship with them

From what angle was Phekezela Mpoko supposed to take over from Mugabe??? The reason for Mugabe's ouster was that attempt to eliminate Mnangagwa who was indeed the rightful vice president of ZANU PF. We all know how the second vice president of ZANU PF is appointed, so was the appointment of Nelson Chamisa as vice president of MDC. Mpoko was never the rightful heir so is Kempo Mohadi. Chamisa was also not the rightful heir as we all know that Thokozani Khupe was the rightful heir of the presidency of Tsvangirai. Unconstitionalism resulted in Mugabe being ousted from power, so is Nelson Chamisa being ousted from power. And I wonder why do you oppose ZANU PF if you advocate for a clear unconstitutional act that was done by Nelson Chamisa.

No one must be above the party or else we will repeat the mistakes of history. MT availed himself to nominations, Chamisa refused. This alone should tell you what kind of person you are dealing with.
