- We visit artist Yinka Shonibare MBE in his East London studio where he has created a separate exhibition space for emerging artists. The Multi-disciplinary artist grew up in Nigeria before returning to England to study Fine Art in London at Byam Shaw School of Art and Goldsmiths College.
Poised between Nigerian and British culture, Shonibare produced a playful, witty and inquisitive art from the collision between the two. Fusing painting, sculpture, craft and costume design, his work has been impossible to classify by medium alone.
His Guest Projects space beneath his studio has provided an important and vital platform for emerging artists while also giving them invaluable experience in the practical side of being a working artist.

What a lovely eloquently spoken artist who makes so clear what he and his beautiful 'cultural art' is all about. His African fabric patterning motifs he has put into his art immediately grips you for its surprising colourful theatricality. And, what a benevolent gentleman artist he is to lend his time and studio space to up-and-coming artists? I was going to say he should be a Royal Academician (RA) and then I see on further googling he is of course already precisely that. And again ~ I am straightaway reminded of the stunning 'boat in a bottle' fourth plinth Trafalgar Square exhibit of some years ago I made a point of visiting without dwelling on who the artist was but now thinking "Gosh! That was Yinka's astonishing artistic creation". Thank you Yinka for what you give and inspire toward the British cultural art tradition.
the first time I saw Shonnibare's work was in trafalgar square, a giant ship in a bottle a few years back. been a big fan of his art ever since

Omg. I am sitting here at work(nurse), looking to see what’s new in the art world. I am a born artist with some college training in the states(fine arts).Thankfully not totally spoiled.I was born in England(hitchin). Your ideas are a reflection of ideas, thoughts, projects I’ve had in my head for years. I find art in everything.WOW. I am so excited. I needed the support and didn’t know how to ask. Well here l am. After looking at just this footage. I will get back into my art and come out. I will look forward to seeing your work in person.

Love the work and love the way you talk about your work and what it's like to be an artist. Also love the project space and was lucky enough to get to be a part of it for a month (May 2015 - AltMFA Jamboree) which was so rewarding and special on so many levels. But I was a fan of his practice way before that opportunity happened to us :)
