I've given up on trying to figure out Kathleen. It's not like using a photo is anything rare in this series. Quite a number of artists do it and some who have done so have won. Yet she complained about it this time. She's inconsistent. Whatever. The artist created an amazing portrait and the sitter was happy with it too. That's what's important.

Very true. I watch these shows for the great art - no matter how they get there. I don't really believe in "judging" art, far too subjective.

Yes a photo always remains in place, does not require a break, change of position. Photos have been used by artists, since photos became available. I use photos for landscapes as well. Light and shawdow remain constant in a photo.

@@barbaraolson6783 Many older and great painters used 'tools' The Camera Obscura for example. There is no other explanation for how art suddenly leapt from children's drawings to the immense works of art we revere today. So I have No problem with someone using a phone.

Kathleen sometimes i think just say stuff just to have something to say. I've been watching this series for a bit, and it's not the first time someone used their phones. She wasn't even the only one in this episode who was using her phone, and yet she said the girl was "copying" the picture. That was a ridiculous thing to say.

The runners up were so gracious. I have been the winner of categories in competitions in my time and not everyone who doesn’t take home the prize is as gracious. This made me very emotional. Each artist was gloriously talented and I loved every moment of this, but Hetty was exceptional and this win was so well deserved.

The critics obvioulsy don't paint. "Copying reality" is ALOT harder than finding your inner artist.

  • @marshallross3373

Firstly, it's great to see a show celebrating artistry of any kind. I wasn't aware of any "live" portrait competition; what a great idea. The winner worked off a cell phone snapshot, which was an interesting choice. She nailed the likeness, obviously, and imbued the image with painterly energy. I thought it was the outstanding rendition. In portraiture, there is a tension between accuracy, and giving a painting or drawing something extra and unique. Someone mentioned Picasso, and I'm reminded how photography offered a way to essentially supplant portrait painting with a rapid alternative, so portrait painters became less documentarians in the 20th century, and more visual explorers. Now AI is entering the domain with computer generated art, which can create a near perfect likeness with painterly flair. Fortunately for artists, having a one-of-a-kind, tangible object, like a hand painted portrait, has added value due to its uniqueness as a real object, a fact that digital art simply cannot not get around. And, people are impressed with a good, free-hand drawing or painting. There's a guy gaining an online presence with his clips of himself drawing NYC subway riders, and presenting them with the finished sketch. He's quite talented, and built up a pretty massive following. So, ya, the market for art is alive and well.

I am so addicted to watching this competition. It’s so inspiring and just plain beautiful and compelling, as well as inspiring as an artist. I find it curious that I always manage to choose the painting each sitter chooses to go home with them as their favourite. I’m not sure why exactly. That said, I don’t always know how the judges are going to choose their favourite for the top prize, that one occasionally stumps me. 💜💜💜

Opinons on art are subjective. Why do art competitions exist? Why would someone ever want to be rated by some narrow minded critics? Their opinions don't matter anymore than anybody else. And frankly, why care about what anybody else thinks? There will be *somebody* who is drawn to anybody art.

    • @LauraBCReyna

Art competitions exist as a form of PROMOTION. They promote the sponsoring organization, art as a medium-- in order to expose new generations & keep it going. And they promote the artists themselves. Because this is a televised competition it's done a lot of good for the careers of the participating artist.

I wonder if the artists who manage to be chosen for more than one opportunity to participate are asked to come back by the judges who like them but couldn’t necessarily give them a win initially, or, do they have to re-submit for each leg of the competition. There have been many repeat artists over the span of the seasons. It’s cool to see actually. Don’t give up after a “no”!

Not that they shouldn't move occasionally and subtly to deal with crapping and stiffness, all those huge gestures, talking and head movements are frustrating (and inconsiderate) --- to me.
