The best part about the calling out Squidmar joke is that I literally just watched the collab video where Guy, Emil and Trent pick their favourite models. Like literally the video before this one.
Seriously, I know everyone has their preferences but I always thought it mad he didn't use one. Was honestly a total game changer for me when I came back to the hobby recently, makes handling paints, especially mixing colours SOOO much easier.
I really treasure these retro videos. For some reason they have been a reliable source of comfort during really distressing times. For some reason the music and the colors seems to give “early 2000s dvd menu playing to a sleeping room” vibes. Please keep these coming
According to some guy told me the reason a lot of things look like they did back in the day is that the guy in charge of photography or the white dwarf editor was unaware he was colourblind so he sent them back for not being vibrant enough until the wood was bright red etc

As someone who started this hobby in the late 90's this was a real nostalgia trip. I still have a bunch of old skool miniatures somewhere including a Predator tank, Land speeder, Jump squad, Bike Squad, Tech marine and Marneus Calgar.

"It's like seeing a thousand flavors of ice cream and choosing vanilla." Honestly, vanilla-flavored ice cream is the best thing to compare Ultramarines to. I mean, Vanilla's the basic flavor of ice cream, but it's also the one that's for everyone. It's the easiest one to like and is most people's first flavor. It works well with most of the stuff you can add to ice cream and still be good, unlike a lot of flavors. You can't put hot fudge on orange swirl and expect it to work.
Not only am I not a fan of ultramarines the retro style is definitely not my go to for my own models but JESUS this marine is absolutely beautiful! My night lords would love to have him as a trophy any day

Ah, the second edition starter set was my first box set! When I were a lad, we didn't have any of those fancy paint brushes, we had to paint our minis with a broom! Paints? No, we made do with jam, food colouring and shaded with puddle water!* 😉 * A vague reference to a Monty Python sketch...
I can understand why people liken picking Ultramarines to seeing a million options and picking the most basic, uninteresting one. But as a child I was introduced to 40k with Ultramarines, and they've always been my favourite faction. To me they don't feel boring, they feel familiar. They're my default, my old reliable, the friend I know that will have my back through thick and thin. Other colour schemes look cool, but there's something *right* about a space marine in cobalt blue and yellow. Although I love all the armies I collect, my Ultramarines still hold that childlike place in my heart of "the best".
I LOVE these retro Warhammer videos. Even though the older models aren't as technically good as the new models, they just hold a special charm that modern laser cut plastic can't. Also thanks for making me aware of Will's channel.

"tip twisted to a fine point on your palette" You should avoid twisting your brush at all costs. It puts a curve on the bristles which will ruin your tips. Draw, then turn, to form a point.
@@little_hunt3r on draw then turn? Draw the brush on the palette as you load it, lift it off the surface and turn it slightly, then draw again. If you have a good tip this is all you need.
Guy, when doing the decals, just put them on. Don't worry about wrinkles or anything. Once it's relatively dry, take a very wet brush full of Microsol and glob it on the decals. After 2 or two of those, the decal will mold perfectly to the pauldrons. You don't even have to split the U for the ultramarines logo.
I wouldn’t really think of the Ultramarines as the “vanilla” chapter, sure, they’re the poster boys but they have their qualities, I love their lore of trying to sorta be the role models to the other chapters, and how their strict adherence to the Codex Astartes sometimes screws them up. To me it’s a really interesting idea. And also the space roman vibe is absolutely sick, I think they are a unique chapter despite their status as the sort of “template” for other Astartes chapters, but that’s just my two cents.
