Mostly it is what it sounds like: a suicide note. That said, I think the last verse where they change up from seeing the best days behind them to the best days ahead of them is intended to show that depression can be beat.
Finally. A take that doesn't suck.
Yes if you notice towards the end he starts saying a more positive outlook on his life.
Or that death will bring that joy.

Or can be overlooked and end in tragedy.... Either are just as likely, as is the purpose of the song, in my opinion... When it comes to the men around you, you may never know who you have come close to losing in your life.
The 3rd verse always hits hard, especially ending it with "please tell mom this is not her fault". Hands up if that resonates with you. Oof.

I spent a long long time thinking very dark thoughts - part of what pulled me out of it was the thought of someone having to tell my Mother that I was gone - my utterly blameless unfailingly kind Mother who doesn't have a bad bone in her body. This rufty-tufty biker is leaking from his eyes a little bit even after all these years at the thought of putting my Mother through that kind of trauma.
If you are thinking dark thoughts reach out & find someone to talk to. There will always be someone ready to talk, you are not on your own & the Sun will come out again.
Everytime I hear that line i get a little choked up.

This song perfectly represents what it's like to be suicidal. To the people only paying attention to the surface notes, that person sounds sound happy, they sound normal. Meanwhile that person has an internal battle where that depression is digging them deeper and deeper, only focusing the negative. Focusing on the minor "screw ups" in their past. The only reprieve comes in those moments where they make half hearted attempts to end it. This is a very bittersweet song for those that know the pain. They know it and have survived it, or they know it because they're still going through it.
Well said! I remember my half hearted attempts...three times I "failed". But most of all I remember the pain.
I've suffered from depression all my teenage and adult life. You get to be a good actor so you don't worry your friends and family.
"i took my time i hurried up the choice was mine i didnt think enough" line near the beginning of this song is a reference to a nirvana song called "come as you are" where kurt cobain says "take your time, hurry up, the choice is yours dont be late"

I’ve always thought that. Didn’t know if it was just a coincidence though as it’s fitting.

Adam's Song, Shadow Of The Day by Linkin Park, Hurt by NIN, Perfect by Simple Plan, Today by Smashing Pumpkins, Pieces by Sum 41...I spent many days in my room listening to these songs and I still kinda do but only to reminisce on those dark days haha. Thank you for the reaction.

This song always gets me in the feels. Struggling through life as one does, a lot of emotions come to the surface at various points in this song. So much so that I usually have to follow it up with a more positive song 😅
As for the title, the band read about someone (presumably names adam although I don’t recall if that was his actual name) who offer themselves and left a note for their family. It’s a tribute to that person and anyone else out there feeling alone or forgotten.

This song really gets me, too. This was my boy's favorite song, favorite band. He passed almost eight years ago at 19. Not a suicide, but an accidental overdose. I haven't listened to the song in quite awhile. Hearing it now helps release some of those emotions that I hold so deep inside. 🤍🤍🤍

Please know that your boy didn't die for nothing, his story and others like his are what is making me become a healthy person. A lot of people say "How many people have to die this way for it to stop?" And the answer is unending, every drug induced death saves a life while also taking a life.

“I miss you” is a must react! I am and have been ever since they came on the scene, OBSESSED with lead singer, Mark’s voice. I know he had stage 4 cancer, and he’s doing great now. Another miracle. Touched by the hand of Jesus!
"Stay together for the kids" is another great dramatic song from the band about divorce and a separated family. Blink could definitely bring a fun, and heavy side of their music.
This song was written by Mark, he was on tour and depressed. The last verse is actually positive. If you listen, it says how we all have bouts of depression, but we can survive it. Re-listen with that in mind!!

I think I just heard one of my favorite things/observations from Lex.: " That sounds like childhood".
It seems like the singer is coming from the point of view of someone who is taking his own young life. He has a couple moments of reflection but being so young he doesn't have a whole lot of memories to flash back. To a little kid, something like spilling apple juice in the hall is one of the bigger deals.
While touring, Mark experienced a sense of loneliness and became homesick. For him, this was somewhat melancholic, because although his band mates, Tom & Travis had girlfriends to return home to, he did not and would be returning to an empty house. This song is about touring and the loneliness bands feel while away from home, but the spin is that in this song there’s nothing at home to return to.
Many interpret the song to be about suicide. It’s actually not. The band have stated that it’s message is in fact anti-suicide.
Rumours circled that while writing the song, Mark was inspired by a teen suicide note he read in a magazine. Even Wikipedia states that as fact, however it’s never been confirmed and honestly, magazines don’t publish suicide notes. No record of the alleged publication has never been identified.
Adding to the speculation of the suicide theme is the death of Greg Barnes, a teenage student of Columbine High School who hung himself at 17 years old and allegedly was found with this song playing repeat on a nearby stereo.
Actually it was inspired by a suicide note that was sent to Mark via e mail. Both Mark and Tom have stated this. I listened to this so much back in my younger years when bipolar disorder was extremely likely to kill me off. Still makes me cry a bit to this very day, cause it's so reflective of the life I lived.. And the life I still live I guess, in terms of solitude and passing my time in "my room" alone. Gone from my mom's basement to my own living room, so that's a step up at lest.. ...I overshare sorry.

Adam is a kid who survived the Columbine shootings in Colorado to later die to suicide. "We couldn't wait to get outside" is a reference to them making it out of the high-school.

It's funny that Lex mentioned U2 because Tom from Blink 182 started another band called angels & airwaves and some of their songs have a very U2ish sound
Believe it or not, this song really reflects the mood of a lot of people who self harm, sometimes they seem hyper and elated after they've made the decision, it's really heartbreaking to anyone who's known someone who has depression and self harm issues, you just don't know what your friends are going through sometimes they hide it until it's too late

Sometimes the sad depressing songs are the best. They are filled with real personal emotion and energy, that most of us can relate to. It feels good to be moved, even if it's to tears.

Got into these guys in 2002. This was a banger, then. Especially for your teenage and young adult years. The lead singer Mark wrote it because he was young and lonely and didn’t have a girlfriend, and thought that what he had in life would be what he would have for the rest of his life, which was depressing. Which we all go through at times. But then the very last Chorus is the realisation that it’s a struggle that can be beaten.
"I couldn't wait to pass the time in my room alone" that's something that still affects me to this day. I'm highly introverted to the point that I have generalized anxiety disorder, almost agoraphobia. And not being able to leave your house because of fear of people judging you sucks.
Blink started as a funny immature pop punk band that liked to make poo poo jokes. But as they got older they started writing more serious songs with more sombre lyrics.

Its interesting you hear U2 in there. Green Day has a similar sound to Blink182 and they used to tell people they sounded like U2 because they couldnt think of another way to describe their sound since it wasnt mainstream yet.

This is my favorite song ever. Adams Song was inspired by a suicide note singer/bassist Mark Hoppus read about in a magazine. Also, drew inspiration he was feeling of loneliness and isolation while on tour.
When that piano comes in during the bridge, it takes me back to middle school. I think that's when the childlike sound in this one is most prominent. It's sort of playful. Those were much better times for sure. But i like how the last verse and chorus flips it into a positive outlook of having something to look forward to

This is one of those reactions where the video version helps lend a LOT towards understanding the content/message.
Though "Adam's Song" deals with the theme of a suicide, it was supposed to be a life-affirming song, but to Blink-182's horror, this song was found playing on repeat when Greg Barnes, a teenage survivor of the Columbine massacre in Colorado, hanged himself in May 2000.
Tom DeLonge stated:
It affected us really strongly because that song was a song of hope. When we were writing it, we knew specifically that we did not want kids to think it was something that we thought was cool or rad. We didn't endorse it in any way. "
same thing happened with Good Charlotte and their similar themed song which was also meant to be positive. It was even called "Hold On". After that happened they made a music video that had clips edited in throughout the song that stopped the music and had people saying things to further drive that "it gets better" point.
Punk rock usually has an upbeat happy sound especially pop punk. Sometimes some of their songs have deep meaning. Melancholy would be the word, mood? This is a sad song. Should've listen to more of their happier songs and funny ones. 🎶 U2 is post-punk alt rock. Similar feel. Yall correct. Post-punk bands like The Cure, Joy Division, The Killers, Bloc Party, etc.
As someone who has dealt with depression and suicide attempts this song hits me deep
I listened to this song in my worst growing up situation. And I'm still here. My brother killed himself last yearz hung himself...at 34 years old. No warning no reaching out for help...I'm 37. And miss my brother everyday. Sigh.

If I remember correctly. A fan sent them a letter about things he was going through and being suicidal but by the time they responded they found out he had killed himself and tributed the song to him.

I think Adam was metaphorical but the song is about depression and someone that eventually commit suicide this is one of their best songs that dealt with something more serious.

My favorite band growing up
Funny that Lexx made the U2 connection, Tom Delonge the higher pitched of the two singers/Guitarist, his other band Angels & Airwaves is massively influenced by U2's early space rock aesthetic.
My daughter's best friend Brian Williams committed suicide. They were both 16 when this song came out. It was about 6 months after this song. We have good memories. This song is Brian's song to us now. RIP Brian.

This whole album really spoke to our youth....it covered every emotion a teenager felt, love, partying, break ups, loneliness happy, and sad, ...this is why they connected well with their audience, kids would hear this album and think, wow! It is t just me that feels this way
It's about a kid that committed suicide. They got a letter from from the mother and they created a song in his memory called ADAMS SONG!
If you guys find the distinction between sad lyrics and upbeat music interesting, j highly recommend checking out some of Paramore last album, After Laughter. Fake Happy is a great example of that.

The “Adam” is the kid who killed himself and wrote a snuff letter to his parents. I’ve read it, it’s very long and you’d be surprised how it relates to yourself and how you can feel sometimes. It’s eye opening.
For a punk band they are deep in terms of social issues, way ahead of the curve when it comes to mental health and for all popularity the genius and willing to tackle these issues in songs is a hidden gem if you listen to their albums you will find more like this.
This is actually an Anti Suicide song. From the mouth of the guy who wrote it. Listen to the lyrics. They sound sad, but its actually about hope. And Marks feelings after tour.

This song is my song. It is about someone who has come so close to killing themselves, but didn’t. Then looking forward to the possibility of happier times.
