Ramayana is average as a story plot possibly cause of the yuga it depicts is positive ,satya or treta yuga cannot be properly shown as an epic story,but dwapar yuga could be cause everyone only cares about their family and not anyone else ,which has potential for every character to be pure grey shaded even the gods are completely grey shaded

Another good book is Rama of the Axe: The Epic Saga of Parashurama written by Ranjith Radhakrishnan. This is a retelling of the story of Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu
Another series is Dharmakshetra, released in 2014, where every character from The Mahabharata is in Chitragupta's court after their death and argue their reasons for the acts which they committed when alive

I have seen and read a lot of Mahabharata editions but still my favourite is "Mahabharatam" in Balarama. If you get a chance, read that because it said Mahabharatam without any bias. Especially the side characters in nowadays serials like Sathyaki, Ashwatama, Bhima all were correctly potrayed in Balarama.
My other favourites are
Bori's, Randamoozham, Ini Njn Urangate, Palace of Illusion. In cinematic experience, nothing close to original story, but still with that cast and bgms, 2014 Star Plus serial was epic and also our nostalgic Dooradarsan one of 1990s.
