  • The new Apple Silicon M1 Processor for MacBook is super fast, but is it faster than its more expensive rival the Intel i9 Processor on a MacBook Pro?
In this video I put the new Apple MacBook Pro M1 vs MacBook Pro i9 in a speed test comparison to review which one is really the fastest. I test them while booting up and opening a variety of popular apps. I also export video files from a video editor and run benchmark tests like Geekbench 5 and Cinebench R23 on both devices.

Great video, that being said, I would argue that this is not a fair test as the 15" has 32gb of ram that would dramatically help for exporting time. I tested a fully loaded M1 MBP and a fully loaded 16" and for rendering the 16" inch came out slightly above and for exporting they were the same. You also put them next to each other, one could argue that the 15" did not get the coolest air and therefore could not max out the i9 as that matching is already having difficulties cooling the i9 beast. I would love to continue this conversation.

To be fair, boot and opening up applications at the beginning relies mostly on the SSD, as the SSD read speeds are typically the bottle neck. Since apple is making their own processor, and know exactly what is in the machines they’re building, they can optimize the boot/loading of applications. The render speed on the M1 was likely bottle necked by the difference in ram, so that’s also not a fair test.. at the end of the day, apple is going to optimize the crap out of their chips, raw processing power is obviously lower than intel or amd, but the hardware optimizations that they get from making the mb, processor, graphics card etc are really playing a huge role.

I think there is more than that to it, I've got a 2013 macbook air, and when I wipe it each year, it can do boot and open safari faster than both of those. But give it 6 months of use, and its slower. To do an apples to apples comparison (ahhh puns) you'd need to freshly wipe each of the machines. At that point I'd agree with you whole heartedly as not only do they have faster SSDs in the M1 MacBooks, they are have more direct access.

to be fair the M1 mac seemed to have less files and one less user account on it. also the M1 chip is designed specifically for MacOS whereas the i9 is multiplatform. I've personally noticed better performance when using windows with my MBP (it's been that way since as long as I can remember and as far back as my original nonretina 2012 MBP with a Core i7.) another thing is thermals. in terms of thermal performance apple liked their reputation for sleek quiet devices meaning that the fans don't kick on until you're already throttling. this isn't a problem for the lightweight low power M1 chip which is designed by Apple for their machines. comparing these 2 processors is like comparing apples to oranges. they really just aren't the same thing.

i want one so bad. sadly macbooks are disposable toys. the battery glue is laughable. and the ssd isn't replicable.

GHz? Cores? Screen size, also how old is your i9? I remember every new iteration kicking hard during the first year or so, hard drive/ssd capacity and % used?
I’m running an 2021 iMac 5k, 11 core, 3.6 with turbo boost, 128 gb ram, internal 2 tb ssd, and it didn’t cost me 5 gs
I also have an mi laptop with similar specs but a bit more meat
I use both for audio production and find with protools, studio one, Ableton my 5k is superior (as a desk top) in every task in the home studio
Still running trash cans at work everything is smooth so opening time is one thing but sustained (8-12+ hours daily) tracking audio, vsts, plug-ins, mixing and mastering are another with a $989 difference my 5k is my best machine but the laptop offer good speed and portability.
Time will tell if silicone holds up the way intel has for us

The i9 mbp has a dedicated gpu while all m1 machines (thus far) have integrated graphics. The RAM would not make any difference here. I am curious however if both intel and m1 machines are running ssd’s with equal/similar free disk space, as ssds tend to run significantly slower when over 70% disk capacity hits and increasingly slower the lower disk space gets after that.

You can buy the MacBook Pro M1 with up to 16 GB of ram, while you can order the MacBook Pro with Intel with a much better graphics card and 64 GB of ram. That also makes a big difference if you can afford the price of the MacBook Pro with Intel i9 processor.

  • @mbntr2363
    @mbntr2363 3 года назад +3

fun fact, my old i5 8600K from 2017 is quite a lot faster than that M1
Other than this, the performance comparison is flawed, for example, opening programs, the i9 model has significantly more programs on it, what does it mean, SSDs get slower when they are filled, so obviously opening programs will take longer.
then, Geekbench is a flawed test, especially when comparing architectures (and in this case the two CPUs are from different ISAs!!!).
Cinebench R23 runs slower than usual, the laptop may be thermal throttling

    • @anthonyb2990

Highly doubtful that the M1 is slower than an i5 when it's comparable and often times a better overall performer over i9

How old was the OS on the i9 Mac?
Wipe them both, use a third party OS like Linux to remove the purposeful apple slowed programming on their competitors cpu.
